'THE CONSTITUTION & THE GIFT OF IMPERFECTION' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

'THE CONSTITUTION & THE GIFT OF IMPERFECTION' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 6, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION We continue our Summer Series titled “This American Faith” with a new theme for the month of August: “The Gift of Imperfection”. When the founders gathered 230 years ago this month in Philadelphia to draft a Constitution for this new nation, they hoped for unity, but they came with their competing interests and concerns. The end result was a document that nobody was completely happy about, but one that everyone felt they could live with in the interest of national unity. The tensions between community and self-interest and inclusiveness and justice are pragmatic realities of any democratic organization. We have seen these tensions at All Souls in recent years regarding our decisions to move downtown and in our work to become more diverse. What has become clear is that a person’s relationship to compromise and imperfection can be a major determining factor for the quality and satisfaction of their life. I’ll kick-off this month’s theme exploring what we can learn from the creation and adoption of the American Constitution. Naughty Nicole: Just How Many Constitutional Freedoms Have We Lost?

Naughty Nicole: Just How Many Constitutional Freedoms Have We Lost?
On Today’s episode of The World In My Eyes it’s almost time for us to select a new President! Yay! And, quite honestly, I’m sick and tired of talking about the upcoming election, and I’m pretty sure if you haven’t decided who you’re going to be voting for, you’re going to be flipping that coin in the voting booth anyway. So there’s nothing more that we here at Renegade can share with you to help you make up your mind. So instead of focusing on the election, I thought we could take a look at another way we’ve lost control of our country. That’s right boys and girls; today’s topic is a look at how Americans have lost virtually ALL of their constitutional rights.

So… Just how many constitutional freedoms have we lost? Well that’s a loaded question my friend, one you really do NOT want the answer to. In fact, our most fundamental rights—to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness—are under assault. But the adversary is Big Wealth, not Big Government, as conservatives like to claim.

    061 George Washington in Retirement

    061 George Washington in Retirement

If you had only six years to enjoy retirement what would you do?

Would you improve your plantation? Build canals? Or work behind-the-scenes to unite your country by framing a new central government?

These were just some of the activities undertaken by George Washington during his brief retirement from public service between 1783 and 1789.

Today, we explore the brief retirement of George Washington with Edward Larson, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in history and author of The Return of George Washington, 1783-1789.

Breaking Down Bank Markazi v. Peterson

Breaking Down Bank Markazi v. Peterson

In 2012, Congress passed the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act, which allowed the Plaintiffs in Bank Markazi v. Peterson to obtain Iranian funds held in New York to satisfy a judgment rendered in U.S. Courts.  This action created a host of issues which are dealt with in this week's episode, including why judgments are the most important part of every civil case, the Court's view on Separation of Powers issues, whether this is a Bill of Attainder and what is a Bill of Attainder.

McShane and Fitz are joined by Wifex from Wicked Radio network. The topics were obviously beer related but turned into a horny free for all. We discussed what we'd do if flashed by a gnarly pair of teets. We got into women that refuse ot masturbate before marriage. We were mystified by that as well. Also, a nice little soapbox rant about the militarization of our police force! Yes, the last subject makes no sense with the rest of the show unless you take into account that this is the Drunkards Call and we don't really care!

Big thanks to Wifex for joining us. She. is. awesome.

We are joined by University of Toronto Political Science PhD student Ching-Fang Hsu as we ponder the end of student demonstrators' occupying Taiwan's parliament for 24 days. We think about questions such as: What is the long term meaning of the Sunflower Movement? How will this new political generation answer the unholy trinity of "Governance + China + Globalized Capitalism"?
