Contractions: What You Can Expect, How to Know It’s Time for You to Head to Your Birth Place, & How to Keep Track

I hope this week’s topic really resonates with you guys. I’ve said it before, I think the most exciting part of pregnancy (other than finding out you’re pregnant!) is figuring out that you’re in labor! 🥳

Most births are not like the movies. They don’t typically start with a massive gush of water followed by insanely intense contractions that have mom rushing to the hospital. 🚑 That’s not to say a birth can’t start with your waters breaking and even immediate contractions, but most often, you’re going to have some time to ease into labor.

With that in mind, I’m going to walk you through what you can expect with those first contractions, what you can do to help manage them as they increase in intensity and consistency, and how you can easily keep track if you want to. 📝

What has a Doula (and Mother of 5) Learned from her experience? Aliza’s Birth Story, Part II

What has a Doula (and Mother of 5) Learned from her experience? Aliza’s Birth Story, Part II

This is a show that shares true experiences of getting pregnant being pregnant and giving birth to help shift the common cultural narrative away from the glossy depictions of this enormous transition you can find on social media, and other media more broadly, to a more realistic one.  It also celebrates the incredible resilience and strength it takes to create another person and deliver them into the world. I’m your host, Paulette Kamenecka. I’m a writer and an economist and the mother of two girls.

In this episode Aliza, a doula and marriage coach, shares ways to manage contractions...she also talks about some important strategies to help you get a birth closer to the one you want; everyone who has been through birth knows that it's really the baby who is driving the process, but there are things you can do to potentially impact your experience, and Aliza talks about some of them here, as well as other doula secrets.

Assessing labour progress -An interview with Dr Clare Davison

Assessing labour progress -An interview with Dr Clare Davison

This episode is all about assessment of labour as we interview Dr Clare Davison.  Clare is a midwife, academic and feminist. Clare is passionate about promoting and supporting physiological birth and working with women so that they can be empowered in their birth choices. Clare combines these passions by working as an independent midwife, providing holistic continuity of care to women; and as an academic teaching and hoping to inspire the next generation of midwives.

We delve into those questions you wanna know:

    • What is the cervix saying in labour?
    • How can we properly assess labour progress?
    • How do midwives using their other senses?
    • We ask how can midwives and health professionals trust birth and support women if they are not being given the skills to support physiological birth progress and use their intuition?

    And we even ask:
How many contractions ‘should’ there be for an “effective” labour?
How quickly ’should’ the cervix dilate?
How often ‘should’ a vaginal examination occur?
And when can we assess that labour has actually started?

Find out lots in this episode of the cauldron, so, tie up your shoelaces, plug in your headphones and come with us on a ride into the world of assessing labour progress….

How Can I Help Tears Heal After Giving Birth?

How Can I Help Tears Heal After Giving Birth?

If a person tears during vaginal delivery then the next question is usually how can I heal? Healing vaginal tears is a spectrum, just like anything in birth and postpartum. This episode dives into some tips about how to help that process proceed.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Ice can be really helpful for the first 24 hrs but should not be used on the vulva and perineum after 48 hrs
    • After ice warmth is helpful for healing. Many people use warm baths or sitz baths during this time.
    • Avoiding constipation or unnecessary strain or pressure on the pelvic floor aids in healing
    • It is normal for it to take anywhere from days to weeks to heal from a tear depending on severity.

Where is my placenta and does it move during pregnancy?

Where is my placenta and does it move during pregnancy?

Placentas happen where the egg implants in the uterus. That can occur anywhere, but occasionally when the placenta is on or near the cervix and oftentime someone says “it may move”. The problem is that the placenta is not like a walking tree that climbs its way up the uterus. This episode dives into placenta placement and if/when it relocated and what that means since it can’t walk!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Placentas can be in all different parts of the uterus
    • A few placements can make vaginal delivery impossible or unsafe
    • Some placentas move up as pregnancy progresses, so a low lying placenta can rectify itself
