Hormones from conception to pregnancy, birthing to feeding, bonding & attachment -An interview with Dr Sarah Buckley

Hormones from conception to pregnancy, birthing to feeding, bonding & attachment -An interview with Dr Sarah Buckley

On this incredible episode, we get the pleasure of picking the brain of Dr Sarah Buckley, where we go on a journey into the hormones from conception to pregnancy, birthing to feeding, bonding & attachment.

Sarah Buckley is a New-Zealand-trained GP/family physician with qualifications in GP-obstetrics and family planning. She is also a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland, where her research is focused on oxytocin and the autonomic nervous system in labour and birth, and the impacts of interventions.

Dr Buckley’s work critiques current practices in pregnancy, birth, and parenting from the widest possible perspectives, including scientific, anthropological, cross-cultural, psychological, and personal. She encourages us to be fully informed in our decision-making; to listen to our hearts and our intuition; and to claim our rightful role as the real experts in our bodies and our children.

She is well known from her incredible and bestselling book Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering: A Doctor’s Guide to Natural Childbirth and Gentle Early Parenting Choices.

And her ongoing interest in the hormones of labour and birth, culminated in her groundbreaking report Hormonal Physiology of Childbearing This report, available for free online, has been described as “…one of the most revolutionary and influential publications on maternity and newborn care ever issued.”

Sarah tells us much more about oxytocin - that marvellous feel good hormone, that really does control so much of our bodily functions. Sarah answers questions about whether oxytocin and synthetic oxytocin (syntocinon/pitocin) act the same in labour and birth.

We talk contractions and how they work, pain relief in labour and the important role oxytocin plays, the effects of Epidurals on oxytocin and how they affect the mother's brain in labour. And even get time to discuss postnatal personality changes due to the hormones… And so, so much more!

Episode 32 - Prodromal labour - When labour starts and stops before active labour begins

Welcome back to the podcast after the summer break.

In this episode, I am talking to the wonderful Alex Burner, who is sharing with us her experience of prodromal labour. This is when labour starts and stops before switching into active labour - often lasting days or weeks in some cases.

Alex talks us through her 3 births, and explains why she thinks this happened to her. We also explore other reasons why it can happen so that anyone listening can prepare in advance if they feel this might be an issue for them.  Alex also shares her top tips for birth partners.

Making Your Birthplace Like Home & Why It Matters

Making Your Birthplace Like Home & Why It Matters

Often when we head to our birthplace we are walking away from all of the things that bring us comfort. What if we told you that there was a way to create more of an at-home experience in whatever setting you're birthing in AND that it will even help your labor to progress more comfortably? Oxytocin and adrenaline have an interesting relationship and when oxytocin is flowing it's generally due in part to mom feeling safe and being able to relax. Hint: Oxytocin is the hormone that causes contractions and the same hormone that flows during intercourse. Naturally, if you can find a way to be more relaxed and feel safe, your body will react positively to those feelings.

S02|EP01: Contractions, Labor support, Umbilical cords, interventions at the time of Labor with Megha Khanduja (Child birth educator)

S02|EP01: Contractions, Labor support, Umbilical cords, interventions at the time of Labor with Megha Khanduja (Child birth educator)

As  a part of 'Know your birthing process ' theme for the month of March-April, we are discussing the common birthing situations faced by women in this episode with Megha Khanduja from Mothering Mothers. While in labor and delivering, especially when it is for the first time,  a woman may have tons of questions based on what she is experiencing, it is valid for her to expect answers for all of them. But more often that not, we do not find answers to all them, which is what we are trying to figure out here, answers to questions while in labour or about labour and birth.

    Highlights
    1) Contractions
    2) Significance of cord around a baby's neck
    3) Baby heartbeat fluctuations while in labor
    4) Birth Rights
    5) Labor management etc.

You will learn the motivating story of Megha where knowledge helped her empower herself and take charge of her birth experience.

Should I Push OR Let My Body Push On Its Own?

Should I Push OR Let My Body Push On Its Own?

We know this is a pretty hot topic right now and we've been getting quite a few questions about whether moms should bear down and push their babies out OR if they should let their body do the work on its own. Well, as per usual, we've broken down all of the details you will need in order to answer this burning question. We discuss the length of the pushing stage, what it looks like with or without an epidural, why dilation and position matter, and even give tons of real-life examples of what this all looks like.
