    JD TALKIN SPORTS #1446

Hey #billsmafia you don’t control your #nflplayoffs destiny but @buffalobills blowout over @dallascowboys 31-10 should build a lot of momentum.
@nyjets 13 straight years no #playoffs and after the listless perfomance yesterday #robertsaleh should be on the hot seat. @nygiants & #tommydevito came back down to earth yesterday.  Losing season for 9th of last 11 seasons.
@49ers look like most complete #nfl team right now.  @ravens clinched playoff berth too.  Huge #mnf on #christmas when #ravens visit #niners but I might miss it.
RIP @unc_basketball champion #ericmontross #cancersucks won a natty in 1993.  Gone at 52 too soon.
@nyknicks & @brooklynnets play tonight.  Need to win on the road if you want to compete for an #nbachampionship get it done tonight.
     #yoshinobuyamamoto bidding reportedly starts today.
    Congrats @partylikearochkind & @dominic.etienne @texasvolleyball back to back titles!
Plus a late addition @jaymahanti to talk about his beloved #takeflight #jetsnation #nyjets & #billwagner should not be heading to #cooperstown should be best of best.  Like #donniebaseball for one.  @call_me_company_prez agree with you on that one.

    Stephanie Pepaj

    Stephanie Pepaj

In this episode, Stephanie Pepaj, 2019 graduate of the College of Saint Rose discusses her spontaneous decision, based on an over-heard conversation at a coffee shop, to go back to school to get her master’s degree in marketing from Queens University Belfast in Northern Ireland. Why not? It was the pandemic and she always wanted to live outside the U.S. While living in Belfast she worked for a digital agency, spent time traveling in Europe, and went swimming in ice-cold water. Apparently, that’s a thing. Currently, Stephanie is putting her education into practice with developing social media marketing campaigns for her food and beverage clients. We also talk about avoiding bears on hikes, her family restaurant in Cooperstown, NY, and her commitment to yoga. It’s time to set an intension to listen to episode four of Design Futures. Namaste.

The Athletic's Daniel Brown discusses his 2022 HOF votes - Ep. 342

The Athletic's Daniel Brown discusses his 2022 HOF votes - Ep. 342

We are very lucky to have had a great conversation with writer and BBWA writer Daniel Brown join us to discuss his 2022 ballot.  He voted for 10 players and feels that the some fellow BBWA voters might be coming a little too restrictive in their votes.

Daniel was a beat writer for the SF Giants and writes now for The Athletic as well as other freelance work and he writes about much more than baseball and does it all really well.

We ran out of time to discuss the impacts of the new rules in MLB this season so we'll hopefully have him back on the podcast.  Thanks Dan!

HILF 22: Baseball with Joe Dungun

HILF 22: Baseball with Joe Dungun

Dawn welcomes Joe Dungan a guy who likes HILF and Baseball so much he asked to be drafted as a guest. Together Dawn and Joe cover the origins of the game, as well as Dawn's top 3 HILFs from baseball's history: Shoeless Joe Jackson, Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson. Play ball!

00:06:30 - Dawn starts with the mythical origin of Baseball: Cooperstown and Abner Doubleday. A lovable story that, perhaps was an attempt to obscure the more elite, urban and gentrified beginning to America's Pastime. The real beginning of baseball came from the marbled halls of the Knickerbocker Club in New York City - a club so elite they wouldn't (for awhile) even admit a Rockefeller.

00:17:32 - It wasn't long after the beginning of organized baseball leagues and the rift between Owners and Players that cheating scandals began. The 1919 World Series wasn't the first, but it was the biggest to date - and it ended the career of the sad case of Shoeless Joe Jackson.

    PART 2

00:34:28 - After the break, Joe and Dawn discuss their favorite baseball movies. League of Their Own, The Natural, Major League - it's a long list. Dawn confesses that her top five includes The Sandlot - which was where she first learned about the legendary status of The Bambino, Babe Ruth

00:53:33 - Jackie Robinson, the first black player in Major League Baseball, has an incredible story. Not only are the events of his life incredible, but the impact he had on the game - and therefore American Culture - is immeasurable. Hear about his early days, his height of fame, and his graceful exit from the game.

The Many MVP's Not in the HOF - Ep. 239

The Many MVP's Not in the HOF - Ep. 239

There are a lot of MVP winners.  The tools for measurement used by voters have not always been as sophisticated as are the tools today. Consequently there are some head-scratching seasons turned in by MVP winners - especially when compared to some of the other contenders that year.

We also discuss what makes a player 'Most Valuable' and if losing teams should be able to have a  player win an MVP that season.

Will Baseball Hall of Fame Finally Welcome Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens?

Will Baseball Hall of Fame Finally Welcome Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens?

Since two of the most controversial and polarizing players in baseball history are in their final year on the ballot, Mike Asti and Cody Potanko just had to offer a show previewing this year's Baseball Hall of Fame results.

They discuss the final ballot fates of Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens while also debating what should happen with the rest of the ballot. Mike and Cody offer their opinions, try to make sense of the hypocrisy of the voters and dissect which players deserve to be enshrined, including some not getting nearly enough support.

Almost Cooperstown 2022 HOF Ballot - Ep. 238

Almost Cooperstown 2022 HOF Ballot - Ep. 238

The final voting totals will be announced on January 25.  We had already called out 6 players to be added in our prior episodes 234 & 235 in which we added 36 players to the Hall of Fame right now.  So with 6 in the book, there's only room for 4 more on our ballot (or the one we would fill out if we actually had a vote). Who will it be? Listen to this fast moving episode to find out!

    JD TALKIN SPORTS #916

Sebastian Fundora "The Towering Inferno" can box and now he gets a shot at the WBC super welterweight title.
Mario Cristobal is going back home.  Can he make "The U" what it once was or has that time passed?  I want the glory days back again.  It's great for College Football.
Steph Curry says he might make sixteen 3's in his next game to tie Ray Allen all-time on the three pointers made list.  I won't put it past him to give it the old college try.

    Part 2 - 36 players we'd induct into Cooperstown right now - Ep. 234

    Part 2 - 36 players we'd induct into Cooperstown right now - Ep. 234

In our prior Ep. 233 we covered 18 players we believe should no longer be passed by and should be inducted into Cooperstown.  There are 263 players and 70 non-players in the HOF. Adding 36 players would make it 299 players - which is 1.27% of all players including those in the Negro Leagues.  Even adding controversial players including a PED users and 4 new Negro League inductees, we feel short adding only 35.  We should argue about Vizquel, not about Joe Mauer!

36 players we would induct into Cooperstown right now - Ep. 233

36 players we would induct into Cooperstown right now - Ep. 233

This is the first of our 'off-season' episodes and we will drop an episode every two weeks now until the start of the 2022 season - or at least what should be the start if the CBA negotiations are unsuccessful.

When we began our podcast 18 months ago our main premise is that there are too few players inducted into Cooperstown.  1.25% seems as if it would about the right amount which means today the HOF would have close to 300 players (not 263).  In this first of two episodes, we talk about re-evaluations of some players we wanted in and others that we now feel are not 'Almost' guys.  There are names you would expect and a few that may surprise!

Our take on 2021 Hall of Fame induction ceremony - Ep. 225

Our take on 2021 Hall of Fame induction ceremony - Ep. 225

First-off we did Ted Simmons wrong since his career average was .285 which is much higher than Andruw Jones' career .254 BA.  Simmons had 248 HR's which is among the best (13th) all time for a primary catcher.  Simmons' speech was the best from any of the three players although Larry Walker and Derek Jeter acquitted themselves well.

10 HOFers passed away over the 2 year period but only 4 people were inducted. We feel and discuss that there could easily be 30 or more that could be inducted which would still keep the percentage of players at 1%.
