Hey folks, in today's episode of the Climate Confident podcast I had the pleasure of sitting down (again!) with Steve Willis to talk in a little more depth about the idea of the ocean as a nation - which he mentioned briefly on last week's instalment of the show.

Steve's concept is a fascinating one, and we spent the whole episode discussing the potential benefits and challenges of such an idea. We talked about the steps that would need to be taken to turn this vision into a reality, and how we could start building a public discussion around it.

In addition to discussing the idea itself, we also talked about the potential for turning it into a Netflix series and how storytelling can play a role in raising awareness and inspiring action.

Overall, it was a thought-provoking episode and I hope you'll enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed recording it!

Last month, the 27th Convention of Parties under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change took place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Simrin Surur, journalist with The Print, had the first hand experience of covering the event. In this episode, Shrikrishna Upadhyaya quizzes Simrin on the developments at the COP 27 and the future of climate action. They discuss the loss and damage fund, phasing out of fossil fuels and the debate on setting a climate goal at a temperature increase of 1.5 °C as opposed to 2 °C.

In this episode, Phil Fox, Acting Director of The Teaching Council, is joined by Dr. Patrick Kirwan and Dr. Mary Moore, to discuss sustainability education in schools. The conversation focuses on practical steps that school communities can take to instil a growth mindset approach towards sustainability, education outdoors, empowering pupils to become agents of meaningful action, and much more. 

After a career in science as an epidemiologist, Patrick trained as a post-primary Science teacher. In 2021, Patrick founded the Irish Schools Sustainability Network, which brings together teachers and students from different schools to foster climate and nature conversations, to work on joint initiatives, share best practice, and push sustainability to the top of the educational agenda.

Mary Moore is a primary school teacher with a passion for all things science and sustainability. She is currently teaching third class in Clerihan N.S., Co. Tipperary, and is an active member of the Irish Schools Sustainability Network.

Konference COP 27. To je událost, při které se klimatické závazky dostávají do nejvyšších politických pater. Po loňském setkání v Glasgow se letos světoví lídři sešli v Egyptském Šarm aš-Šajchu. Hlavní cíl byl jasný – dojednat to, co se v Glasgow probrat nepodařilo, například podpora rozvojových zemí nebo odklon od uhlí. K tomu by mělo postupně docházet i navzdory válce na Ukrajině, která uhelné zdroje opět dostala do popředí. Co konkrétně světoví lídři dojednali? Jaké kroky budou podnikat největší znečišťovatelé a co přesně chystá česká vláda? Odpovíme s Janem Dusíkem, náměstkem ministra životního prostředí. Mezitím nepolevovalo hektické dění v kryptosvětě, a významné personální dopady se nevyhnuly už ani českým startupům.
