Take a 30-minute long-haul holiday and visit Queensland, Australia in this episode of Charitable Travel's TIPs! Join us as we speak to Kate Duffy of Tourism and Events Queensland, and Johnny Gaskell a marine biologist and master reef guide, for an insider's guide to this tropical region and all it has to offer.

To the south of the state, you'll find the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast where surfers flock to the sandy beaches. Travel further north and you'll cross the tropic of Capricorn before reaching the Daintree rainforest, the oldest living rainforest in the world. While that glorious coastline has a habit of dominating things, venture inland and you'll find ancient landscapes, remote, gorgeous, and national parks teaming with wildlife.

Can we revive extinct ecosystems with music? Exploring the ocean orchestra with Dr Dominic McAfee

Can we revive extinct ecosystems with music? Exploring the ocean orchestra with Dr Dominic McAfee

Shellfish reefs once framed Australia’s coastline from Noosa to Perth, but today they’re considered functionally extinct. So why are some researchers turning to music to bring these decimated habitats back to life?

This week, we’re heading to the ocean floor to learn more about the reef restoration projects that are springing up around the country, and how music designed for oysters is playing a crucial role.

Join host Professor Andy Lowe in conversation with Dr Dominic McAfee, an award-winning marine biologist from the University of Adelaide, who’s figured out exactly what tunes to play to get these reefs going again.

PODCAST: Barbados and the Blue Economy - Restoring the reef

PODCAST: Barbados and the Blue Economy - Restoring the reef

In our third episode looking at ocean-related issues facing the eastern Caribbean island nation of Barbados, released in the run-up to the UN Oceans Conference, we turn to the issue of the coral reef. Barbados’s reef has been declining for decades, hit by decades of pollution and the climate crisis. CORALL, a volunteer organization supported by the UN, is showing that it is possible to bring life back to the reef, by carefully growing coral in nurseries off the coast. Conor Lennon from UN News went to visit the nurseries, to find out if it will be possible to bring the reef back to its former glory. Music: Within the Earth, Ketsa

Emily Darling & Kim Fisher - The Challenges of Mapping Coral Reefs When Satellites Can't See Them - #MBM 23

Emily Darling & Kim Fisher both work at the Wildlife Conservation Society, respectively as the Director of Coral Reef & as Spatial Analyst. They have developed MERMAID, a platform enabling coral reef scientists to aggregate & share their data together.  One of the main challenges they tackle being most measurements need to happen in the field as opposed to being able to leverage satellite imagery.
