What are you most afraid to lose? Family, reputation, relationship, financial stability, an addition, success, health, and long life. What if Jesus asks you for that thing?

What are you afraid following Jesus might cost you?

Well, I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The good news is, you don’t have to wonder. Jesus tells us right up front what he wants from us. He’s very clear about the cost of following him. There’s nothing hidden here. No fine print. That’s the good news.

The bad news is (depending on your perspective), he wants it all. Everything. He wants your family, reputation, that relationship, finances, and success. He wants your health, your work, your sex life, and your lifestyle.

The good news is, you don’t have to guess. The hard news is, he wants your very life. But. You will never get a better offer than his.

Discipleship with Jesus involves a high cost that was not lost on first-century followers and it must not be lost on us as twenty-first-century followers. What is the cost of following Jesus? Is it worth everything we may be afraid of losing? Wherever we are in our spiritual journey, these are questions the Gospel writer John helps us thoughtfully and carefully consider. We must not miss that as apprentices of Jesus, we are called to take up our cross and follow him. Apprenticeship with Jesus involves losing one’s life, not keeping it. We are to love God first and foremost. That love for God must be so strong that other loves in our life, including love for self and others, are quite small in comparison. It is out of our love for him that we sacrifice our lifestyle for him and the advancement of his good news kingdom mission in the world.

"Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.  We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God."  John 6:68,69

When the followers of Jesus experienced a teaching that was hard, many deserted and left finding things too difficult to bear.  Jesus' teachings are difficult and they must be taken on faith -- to believe He truly is the Son of God.  Just as in Jesus' day there were those who left, there are those among us today that choose to say "no" to Christ.  But in our path, we must find that His words...the words of eternal life, are enough.  The promise that awaits us if we persevere is out of this world (quite literally).  We must find as we seek the Lord, there is no plan B.  No out.  No backing down.  Jesus is worth it and He is enough.
