Gemma Wass and Martina Swinburn guest on The Business Show on Marlow FM 1st February 2024

Gemma Wass and Martina Swinburn guest on The Business Show on Marlow FM 1st February 2024

On The Business Show on Marlow FM on 1st Feb 24 my guests were Gemma Wass, Associate Director at independent financial advisors Harding Financial and counsellor Martina Swinburn, who joined me to talk about their work, and to discuss a range of business news stories.

My first music choice from the Hilary Playlist was Crowded House with “Weather With You” - hear it at https://youtu.be/ag8XcMG1EX4?si=4o3mbkg8ldTyk7w2.

Gemma then spoke about Harding Financial, covering the two streams of their work – support for businesses and working with private clients.

Their website is at https://hardingfinancial.co.uk/ and you can connect with Gemma via https://www.linkedin.com/in/gemma-wass-previously-ryeland-180a3611/ .

Martina then spoke about her counselling and psychotherapy business based in Henley, and how her Irish upbringing led her to be doing what she does today.

Her website is https://www.martinaswinburn.co.uk/ - connect with her at https://www.linkedin.com/in/martina-swinburn-b6327119/ .

Her music choice was “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus, because it’s about the help she gives people climbing from where they are to where they want to be.  You can hear it at https://youtu.be/NG2zyeVRcbs?si=p-ZJO-fGEK91NNaf.

Martina chose a story featured at https://www.ivyhouse.co.uk/news-views/articles/five-wellbeing-trends-in-2024/ - where is wellbeing going in 2024, and how does that help businesses?

We then played Gemma’s choice of music – “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.  She chose it because it just makes her happy, and it makes her dance around the kitchen!  You can hear it at https://youtu.be/ZbZSe6N_BXs?si=YDK-cZYNYDWmW-6-.

Her story for us to discuss can be found at https://amp.theguardian.com/society/2024/jan/22/mental-health-uk-burnt-out-nation - how should businesses support their staff?

We finished with my story at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-67911127 - can pop-up shops help to regenerate our High Streets?

The last song was the second for (and from) Hilary – Joy Division with “Love will tear us apart” – you can hear it at https://youtu.be/zuuObGsB0No?si=PEqpuYgXlJnOaenp.

54: How To Love The Body You Get Married In with Sami Rose

Have you ever been invited to a special event, like a big birthday party, and immediately calculated the number of days, weeks or months until that event because you’re trying to work out how much weight you might be able to lose, or put on, before then?

Increasingly newly engaged people are being targeted for Wed shred programs and bridal boot camps and it’s not unusual to be asked by well-meaning, but less-than-tactful family and friends what your weight loss plan is, or how much you want to lose before your big day.

Sami Rose is an advocate for body neutrality and helps people make peace with food and their bodies and be kinder to themselves.

Sami is going to teach you:

    • why your impending wedding date is not the best deadline or motivation for sustainable lifestyle change or your happiness,
    • why being at your thinnest or smallest doesn’t necessarily mean looking or feeling your best, and
    • some handy questions to help you reframe the way you think about your body image.

I also share a message from one of my brides about how she feels her family have been detrimental to her body image from a very young age and what Sami recommends she do when it comes to shopping for her wedding dress.

And stay listening to the end for Sami’s best tips for keeping your confidence high, prioritising your health goals and how to love how you feel in the body you get engaged, and married, in.

Vitamin N: The Power of Nature in Work/Life Wellness

Vitamin N: The Power of Nature in Work/Life Wellness

Dr. Laura welcomes guests Laura Cohen, counsellor and founder of her own nature therapy practice, and Philip Vanhoutte, ITC industry professional and author of “The Smarter Working Manifesto”, to the show to talk about the power of Vitamin N, nature. Both Laura and Philip are champions of the benefits of a connection with nature at work and in life.

Laura Cohen, who works with Dr. Laura through Canada Career Counselling, details studies that show people to be happiest in coastal environments and outdoors. She also cites the profound benefits of nature for those living with ADHD. Philip Vanhoutte is a proponent of Biophilic Design, which includes identifying fourteen patterns of nature that would ideally be included in a building to directly impact the wellness of individuals within. The ways in which nature improves our work lives and overall health are compelling and it becomes apparent that we need to set ourselves up to maximize our interactions with nature. Laura and Philip share their individual expertise on the transformative power of nature and how they each advise incorporating more of the outdoors into our daily lives.

“There's also this idea that I think a lot of the time we see nature as this thing that's separate from us or that it's a commodity to fulfill us and make us feel good… it reduces our stress hormones and we see it as something that's beneficial. But the next level is kind of understanding the reciprocity and how do I give back to nature, and developing that sort of deeper relationship with nature.” Laura Cohen

    About Laura Cohen:

Originally from Montreal, Laura is now based in Halifax with a 10 minute walk to the ocean. For the last 6 years, Laura has worked as a counsellor in universities, Employee Assistance Programs, and in private practice, including her own nature therapy practice and Canada Career Counselling.

Laura holds a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from McGill University and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a minor in Psychology from Concordia University. Laura has been a guest lecturer for organizations such as Dalhousie University, Concordia University, Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association presenting on the mental health benefits of nature as well as, offers individual nature-informed therapy and outdoor groups therapeutic services for women and children for an embodied experience. She is also an intuitive, creative, and finds herself exploring the intersection of psychospiritual concepts and western psychology in her work as a nature therapist  guiding her clients through the lens of transpersonal psychology, polyvagal theory, creative arts, and other modalities like Acceptance & commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems.

    About Philip Vanhoutte:

Leveraging a rewarding international career in the ITC industry, Philip Vanhoutte’s passion for personal productivity tools and communication & collaboration solutions morphed into a singular purpose: accelerating the realization of human potential.

Philip champions the adoption of Smarter Working: a holistic human centred work design practice that unifies space, technology, and people disciplines. He co-authored The Smarter Working Manifesto, a definitive guide on how to shape the best work style. In his quest for health and joy at work he learned that Nature Deficit Disorder has produced highest ever burnouts, work induced sickness, and a struggling workforce. He campaigned for more nature at work with Ozadi at SXSW in Austin and GCUC in Denver.

Philip graduated from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium with a combined Applied Economics and Engineering degree and a major in Marketing. He started his career at Accenture Consulting, to continue with key change management roles at Engie and Wang Laboratories. In the second part of his IT career, he grew the MCI WorldCom International business, became Chief Marketing Officer at Sony-Ericsson Mobile Communications to finish a blue-chip career as SrVP and MD of Plantronics (now part of HP) Europe and Africa.

Since the Financial Crisis of 2008, Philip became a strong advocate of Agile Working with a passion for Human Dimensions of Organisations. He is known for transformational projects in award-winning offices which are acoustic temples and benchmarks for the biophilic built environment. He has advised Leesman, Veldhoen+Company and Work EvOHlution, and provided support to the founding of the Osservatorio Smart Working at the Politecnico di Milano.

Don't stop talking! Mental health in Nepal

Don't stop talking! Mental health in Nepal

Hi everyone. Thanks for joining me for this new episode of Nepal Now, the podcast where we highlight different ideas and actions to move the country forward. I’m Marty Logan.

Thanks to those of you who filled out the poll on our last episode, about Jumli Marsi rice. It’s available if you listen on Spotify, and I post a new poll and a question there with each episode. This poll was tricky: Do you think the growing trend of selling nutritious crops instead of consuming them is good for farm families? That contradiction was reflected in the poll’s results, with most people choosing they ‘Didn’t know’ if it was a positive or negative development.

If you’re listening on Spotify look for the poll, and a separate question, that you can answer about this episode. No matter where you hear Nepal Now, you can always send me a comment, or question, to martylogancomms@gmail.com.

OK, on with today’s chat... I’ve noticed a huge difference in publicity around the topic of mental health since I returned to Nepal in 2016, compared to when I lived here from 2005 to 2010. The subject is highlighted in the news media more regularly, and certainly on social media. Also, there seem to be many more organizations offering mental health education or treatment, both to individuals and to organizations. For example, a couple years ago I interviewed someone from an NGO that is creating quiet spaces it calls ‘counselling rooms’ in schools in some pilot districts. You can find the link to that episode in the notes to this show.

Growing recognition of the importance of mental health might be one of the few positive results of recent disasters, like the 2014 earthquake and the Covid-19 pandemic, notes today’s guest, consultant psychologist Sneha Agarwal Chaudhary. Still, it is alarming that the suicide rate in the country continues to rise steadily.

Sneha and I also chat about a few popular perceptions / conceptions of mental health counselling, like the cost and confidentiality, then turn to discuss particular groups of people who make up the audience of this podcast. These include young people in general as well as those who leave Nepal temporarily to either work or study. I think the main takeaway from our conversation is: If you’re concerned about your mental health, find someone you can talk to.

As today’s conversation includes talk of suicide – please take special care while listening.
