Interview with Emily Whitehurst of Survival Guide and Tsunami Bomb

Interview with Emily Whitehurst of Survival Guide and Tsunami Bomb
We had the pleasure of interviewing Emily Whitehurst of Survival Guide and Tsunami Bomb over Zoom video!

“Music is crucial to my survival!” said Emily Whitehurst. “Survival Guide is one woman trying to shape her own place in this world as a musician.”

An electronic indie-pop artist with a background in punk, Emily is the solo force behind Survival Guide. Her danceable tunes evoke a sonic birthday cake: alternating layers of Depeche Mode, Metric, Peter Gabriel, and Grimes, with vibrant melodies and vocals the icing on top.

A California native now residing in Texas, Emily’s music obsession began with Green Day, leading her to a dreams-come-true life of punk rock as she traversed continents fronting the band Tsunami Bomb as “Agent M.” Over the years, her music gradually shifted toward synth pop in The Action Design, then further into the electronic indie-pop realm as Survival Guide.

Originally a duo, Survival Guide’s first album, Way To Go, – dubbed “passion behind an electronic soul” by New Noise Magazine – was released in 2015. It was around this time when Survival Guide slowly, amicably yet painfully became a solo act, leaving Whitehurst unsure of what to do next. Never having written or performed music alone, she considered everything from starting a new band to quitting music altogether. After a major geographical shift, an acoustic album, and some solo touring, she’s finally ready to return as a solo Survival Guide.

The newly released, alter-ego Survival Guide debuted in January with RHV1.5 (short for Request Hotline, Vol. 1.5): featuring two intriguing dance-party reimaginings of AFI’s “Totalimmortal” and “Girl’s Not Grey on Side A alongside two contemplative Misfits piano-serenade covers (“Skulls” and “Hybrid Moments”) on Side B.

With only 500 copies pressed on randomly colored vinyl, RHV1.5 is also a taster for the 11-track, digital-only Request Hotline, Vol. 2, featuring all songs from the 7” plus an eclectic array of further punk covers from Green Day, Runaways, Avril Lavigne, Distillers, Tony Sly, Sleater-Kinney, and Maybe Tomorrow, each with its own bold and unique Survival Guide treatment.

    Rockcast 316 - Chris Daughtry

    Rockcast 316 - Chris Daughtry
Daughtry lead singer Chris Daughtry just put out a cover song. Now normally that's not a big deal but when you release a cover on the song's 40th anniversary and include Lzzy Hale from Halestorm, it's a big deal. Plus, it's really good. The song is "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) by Journey and it's definitely a modern/heavy take on the classic rock song. Chris is back on the Rockcast to discuss why this song exists, working with Lzzy, how he keeps his voice in shape, and his take on full albums vs. singles.

    Covering Covers

    Covering Covers
This episode was originally supposed to be on September 21st, which is also known as Earth Wind & Fire Day, based on the lyrics to their song “September”. Once upon a time, Taylor Swift covered that song…badly. On this episode, we discuss cover songs, both good and bad, and some that are very surprising!

    Interview with Karine Hannah

    Interview with Karine Hannah
We had the pleasure of interviewing Karine Hannah over Zoom video.

Growing up in Canada, and at the age of sixteen, her performance on a Canadian television show caught the eye of none other than Celine Dion. The world-renowned diva went on to ask Karine to perform at her wedding. “That was really the start,” she recalls. “It was such an incredible moment, and I was driven to pursue this endlessly to fulfill my dreams as a world-class singer.” “It happened at a time when I least expected it,” the songstress continues. “I’d been working so hard for so long, and then Cash Money came into the picture.” Their partnership kicked off with Karine’s incendiary debut single “Burning Up”, co-written and produced by Josh Harris. Climbing the Billboard charts and making it all the way to number five. That’s only a prelude to what followed. Her next single co-written by Michael Jay called “Victory” which landed in the top 10 on the Billboard charts.

Karine nods her vocal influences to legends such as Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Jennifer Holiday, and as well as French and European artists she heard on the radio as a child. As a result, she’s got something completely her own and electrifying.

Ultimately, Karine stands poised to capture the world’s attention with her voice. “I want people to feel something massive in their soul after listening to me interpret a song, whether it’s an original or a cover tune,” I sing from the soul, and I hope it reaches listeners.

    Interview with Beth Hart

    Interview with Beth Hart
We had the pleasure of interviewing Beth Hart over Zoom video!

The Grammy-nominated vocalist Beth Hart has been gearing up for the release of her “Black Dog” music video for months, but unfortunately for undisclosed reasons, she isn’t able to include the audio. Never one to withhold from her fans, Hart decided to release the video anyway – just without the audio – in what may be the first ever “silent” music video release.

Directed by Greg Watermann, the “Black Dog” music video comes on the heels of Hart’s latest album ‘A Tribute To Led Zeppelin,’ which pays tribute to one of the most formative musical influences of her career.

At the helm during the recording of ‘A Tribute To Led Zeppelin’ was super-producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance) and engineer Doug McKean (Goo Goo Dolls, Adam Lambert). The A-list musicians include Cavallo on guitar along with Tim Pierce (Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner); on bass was Chris Chaney (Rob Zombie, Slash);on keyboards was Jamie Muhoberac (Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones); on drums was Dorian Crozier (Celine Dion, Miley Cyrus, Joe Cocker), and Matt Laug played drums on Stairway To Heaven (Alanis Morissette, Alice Cooper). Orchestral arrangements were by David Campbell (Muse, Beyoncé). All that was left was the final piece of the puzzle...the voice.

Things clicked into place when Cavallo was producing Hart's previous album, ‘War In My Mind’ (2019), and she did an impromptu version of "Whole Lotta Love" in the studio. He later asked about doing a whole record.

Earlier on in Beth's career, former VP of Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label, Alan Callan, recommended Beth contact Jeff Beck to work together. Hart and Beck have gone on to form a beautiful friendship. Beck and Jimmy Page are also friends, and for a while, bandmates in The Yardbirds. After Beck's departure from the band, they would eventually become Led Zeppelin.

149 – Talking About Green Bay Packers Music

149 – Talking About Green Bay Packers Music

Since the Green Bay Packers just clinched the top seed in the NFC and are gearing up for the playoffs (and, yes, because we also didn't get around to booking a guest), My First Band is breaking format this week to focus on a strange and hyper-specific type of music: novelty Packers songs! Yes, both My First Band host Tyler Maas and engineer/co-producer Jared Blohm are Packer Backers and unironic appreciators of goofy, football-focused tunes.

Prior to this Sunday's regular season finale and what's sure to be a playoff run capable of inspiring a lot of new songs, Maas and Blohm talked about the soft spot they each have for Packers-related novelty and parody music, how the "genre" has changed and grown over the years, and some of their favorite artists in this creative category. Get ready to hear about memorable material from the likes of C.W.A., Happy Schnapps Combo, The Wedgies, The Wizenhiemers and Lil Wayne, as well as lesser-known green-and-gold greats like Widacre and Poopshovel. We'll be back to the normal My First Band format next week! Probably.

My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Whisky Pig ("Titletown").

Tis the season! Let's celebrate with Andrew's only studio-recorded holiday cover song. Maybe one day we'll get a full holiday album, but for today, we'll explore this one's origins, delve into Andrew's own take on this classic, and why this should maybe not be considered a “Christmas song”.

    25. As You Sleep

    25. As You Sleep

Music sometimes allows us to transport back to a time and place in our lives. Music really can be a time capsule and a time machine simultaneously. Come revisit this track from Andrew's first band and think about what this song means to you, because it likely means something different than what it means to me!

    24. Slow Burn

We're doing something a little different for our 25th episode! Though Andrew has performed the song we are discussing today, it was originally someone else's song. Andrew admires this song and this artist enough to record a cover version, so we felt it was time to talk about music that he enjoys that’s not his own.
