Ep. 4 - HOPE Score for Severe Hypothermia
In this episode we discuss the HOPE score, a tool that improves our ability to select the severely hypothermic patients who can benefit from warming with extracorporeal life support (ECLS).
We begin the with the case of Tayyab Jafar, a young man who was successfully resuscitated from severe hypothermia with both cardiopulmonary bypass and ECMO, but not without incident.
We then discuss the derivation and validation studies for the HOPE score.

In de podcast Kwestie van Centen bespreken Martin Visser en Herman Stam de opvallendste details uit de ramingen, die de basis vormen voor Prinsjesdag. Visser wijst op de corona-ellende die niet is terug te zien in de cijfers, de grote verschillen tussen de voorspellingen van ABN Amro en het CPB, en de opmerkelijke, dalende investeringen.

Nobelprijs
Jan Tinbergen won zijn Nobelprijs voor het modelleren van de Nederlandse economie. Inmiddels is modelbouw verandert van top-of-the-bill-wetenschap naar praktisch vakwerk: modellen zijn nauw verweven met beleid.
Conjunctuuranalyse
Volgens Johan Verbruggen, hoofd conjunctuuranalyse bij De Nederlandsche Bank, is een economisch model 'de ideale manier om een enigszins vereenvoudigde weergave van die hele ingewikkelde economie, die uit zo ongelofelijk veel interactie bestaat, te krijgen. En dat heb je nodig, anders wordt je gek'. Het is voor hem dan ook volkomen logisch dat berekeningen van deskundigen breed besproken worden en tot aanpassingen van Kabinetsplannen leiden.
Doorrekeningen Planbureaus
Internationaal is deze situatie echter uitzonderlijk, zo weet Wimar Bolhuis. Bolhuis onderzocht hoe de Nederlandse politiek omgaat met doorrekeningen en ramingen en concludeerde dat de politiek de boodschappen van de planbureaus vrijwel letterlijk neemt. Er is wel kritiek, maar die komt niet van de politiek. Het is ook niet zo dat deze traditie onder druk staat. Als ik iets heb geleerd is dat de politiek alleen maar meer modellen en meer doorrekeningen wil.
