🔑CREATIVE Problem Solving UNLOCKED 🔓 - Marcus Schaller

    What is creative problem solving?

Business coach Marcus Schaller discusses this and much more in this episode of It's Marketing's Fault.

He describes creative problem solving as understanding problems on a deeper level and creating space for insights, rather than rigidly following best practices or rushing to conclusions.  He discusses the need for setting boundaries on our time and environment in order to innovate better. Marcus also talks about his podcast, Your Morning Spark, and the process of figuring out what it should be.

"Compromise is for Cowards" - Engaging in Conflict Correctly
The most effective leaders have a secret... They aren't afraid of conflict. On the contrary the most effective leaders know that breakthrough results often lie on the other side of successful conflict navigation. They don't buy into the mythology that all conflict is bad. No they recognize that interpersonal conflict is destructive but this is not the only type of conflict possible. Engaging in task conflict (the work we do) and process conflict (how we do it) is not only healthy but productive and a place of potential creative problem solving. In this cast learn how to move from confrontation to collaboration. In our two does what by when we explore a past conflict to see how you can do it better.I invite you to join my mailing list at Developing Leaders Inc, where you will not only receive a free copy of my ebook on delegation but you will also get a free leadership course. Strategic Problem Solving for Data Scientists | Fred Pelard

Strategic Problem Solving for Data Scientists | Fred Pelard
For the last 20 years, Fred been lecturing on strategic thinking and complex problem solving; with an audience that has included the CEOs and management teams of major corporations and consulting firms around the world. Today he’s here to talk to us about his book. And share some tips with us on how we can be better problem solvers and more strategic. FIND FRED ONLINE Website: https://www.fredpelard.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fredpelard/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/fredpelard QUOTES [00:11:10] "When you're solving problems, you're starting point pretty much every time is going to be complexity. If it's not complex, it doesn't need solving" [00:14:05] "When your chest is puffed out, you know the answer. You're in expert mode." [00:17:58] "A lot of what these profession share is one similarity, which is a lot of the essence of their work is in the past. Lawyers solve past problems. Investigative journalists reveal past crimes. Engineersing actions build things in the present. But you see a theme emerging. None of these people really focus on the future. And so when you focus on the future, the data runs out of road and you have to use a different method." [00:20:29] "You don't need real Data to have real options. You need real Data to have real solutions. And that's one of the slight drawbacks of a lot of the people I work with who tend to be analytical in their mindset." [00:23:57] "I want to know which of my ideas is wrong early so I can reallocate my scarce time and resources towards the ones that work. And then once you've done that, now you feel very confident in your ideas." [00:25:17] "It's creative first and analytical second. So first, have lots of ideas about a problem in the future and then bring the cavalry of the data to sort of whittled them down to one." SHOW NOTES [00:01:35] Guest introduction [00:02:10] Where Fred grew up and what it was like there [00:03:15] What Fred was like in high school [00:03:45] The transition from rocket science to the business world [00:05:09] The inspiration for the book: How to Be Strategic [00:07:59] Being strategic is a mindset [00:10:47] Complexity, completion, clarity, certainty, and conviction. [00:13:43] The expert mode of problem solving [00:15:33] The analytical mode of problem solving [00:17:34] The creative mode of problem solving [00:20:29] Solutions versus options [00:21:29] And moving on now to the strategic method. Talk to us about that and maybe give us the example and some benefits like you're just doing. [00:27:51] The difference between qualitative and quantitative problems [00:30:28] Qualitative problems have a unique set of challenges [00:37:26] The power of positive framing [00:40:59] A twist on The Lean Startup Philosophy [00:49:10] Sell your ideas with impactful words [00:53:42] Memorable metrics [00:58:02] Road test your metrics [00:58:59] How to create a compelling story [01:02:30] It’s 100 years in the future, what do you want to be remembered for? Come on, Simone...Let's Talk About Your Big "But"

Come on, Simone...Let's Talk About Your Big "But"

On the heels of last episode’s “Trillion Dollar Coach” discussion, we now turn to the wisdom of another “coach” who unwittingly put his life in jeopardy in order to help someone else follow a dream.

And building on this coach’s assertion that “everyone has a big ‘but’,” we’ll explore the impacts that little “buts” can have on success and leave you with 3 things to keep in mind as you lead your team, your family, and yourself toward a more sustainable future:

    1) You can openly acknowledge and embrace your "buts" without allowing them to drain your energy and slow you down;

    2) You can help your stakeholders understand how to use their “buts” as an opportunity to grow; and

    3) That while using blunt or negative words like "but" and “however” and “no” can have unintended consequences, artificially avoiding words that occasionally need to be said to others—and to yourself—can sometimes cause even greater damage.

Being a Passionate and Deliberate Engineer with Jem Young

Being a Passionate and Deliberate Engineer with Jem Young

Today we are joined by Jem Young, a senior software engineer over at Netflix. Jem is here to discuss his programming philosophy and how it is an extension of himself, how engineers should have the freedom to have ideas and veto things, the difference passion makes, and being informed about the libraries that you include in your code and if they are actually needed.

Netflix's homepage got 50% faster when Today Edwards had the idea of not shipping React to the client. All event handling was done with vanilla javascript and React remained on the server side. Finding this balance of developer productivity and performance is important. Jem talks about how you should really examine the reasons why you are including a library in your codebase, and to ask yourself if it could be implemented in a simpler way with what you already have.

Jem discusses what it means to love the work you do and to have a real passion for creating software. Passion makes a difference in a developer's career path, the devs who are just looking to make a paycheck and don't really care don't end up in the same place that those who really care about their work do. Jem is curious, he experiments with software on his weekends, he'll sometimes wake up at 1am with the solution to a bug he's been thinking about all day, software is an integral part of his life beyond it just being how he puts food on the table.

    Design Q&A

    Design Q&A

As many of you know, Shaunae is a professional photographer and Sarah is a graphic designer. We wanted to start a discussion and cover all your topics related to photography and design. Last week, Shaunae answered your photography questions. In today’s episode, Shaunae asks Sarah questions provided by our listeners about all things related to design.

    How did you get started?

I have always loved creating. From a young age I was drawing and crafting, but it took me awhile to realize that it was what I wanted to do for a career. I came across Design Arts in a list of majors offered by the University of Wisconsin system and ended up applying for the major. I really didn't understand exactly what I was getting into, but as soon as I started to learn about the process and begin designing pieces I fell in love with it.

What is a brand? What do you need to get one started?

The easiest way for me to define a brand is to call it an experience. It is the experience from the moment someone first hears about you, to contacting you, being provided your service and even how they feel afterwards. As a logo designer, I will be honest and say a logo or any of your visuals are not what make your brand. These things are called your brand identity, and they assist your over all experience and help create recognition of your brand.

What do non-designers need to know about design?

First, be aware that design is not simply about making things look pretty. Yes we do want things to look good. But design is about communication and solving a problem to reach an objective. This could be attending an event, picking up a book off of a shelf, defining your services. There is a process to this in understanding your client and knowing how they will best respond to take that action towards your objective.

But in terms of DIY design, don't be afraid of color, you can use a color wheel to help you know which colors pair nicely together. However, just like fonts and images, don't go overboard and put in to many colors or fonts. I preach simplicity in design and it can be one of the hardest things to curate a design back to its simplest elements. You want to make sure that your message is able to come across clearly.
