A Deep Dive on Credit Scores with Carolyn Feldman

A Deep Dive on Credit Scores with Carolyn Feldman

Carolyn Feldman of Nationwide Credit Clearing joins us for the first of two episodes today.  We cover a wide range of topics from establishing credit to the difference between a FICO Score and what she calls a "Fake-O Score."

When you're young and you need to establish credit, you may want to consider a secured credit card - Carolyn explains the difference between secured and unsecured, as well as how credit utilization and bill payment affect your credit score.

To get your true credit score, you'll want to get your FICO Score from MyFico.com. You're able to look at your true FICO score (that potential lenders see) once per year at each of the three major credit bureaus, for free.

Beware of a website called Credit Karma - this is only an estimate of your score.   They have only 2 of the 3 major credit bureaus - Experian won't participate with them.  So Carolyn calls Credit Karma your "Fake-O" score as opposed to your FICO score.

If you're a Capital One customer, they have a program called Credit Wise.  This is a true FICO Score.

It's important to know the difference between a hard pull of your credit history and a soft pull.  When you check your score, that's a soft pull.   There's no penalty for checking on your rating.   When a third party pulls your score, that's a hard pull and can affect your rating.

Credit cards have billing cycles and statements, and credit bureaus are no different - this will affect when new information hits your credit report.  Carolyn says to think of it like a report card.  She explains why.

If you find an error on your credit card report, you can challenge it.  And, by law, if the creditor doesn't respond in 30 days, it comes off your report.   But remember, often the dispute is with the lender,  not the actual credit reporting agency.

We also spend some time on medical bills, which are often a source of financial hardship.  Medical bills do not go on your credit report until they are unpaid.  This is why it's a good idea to even make small payments on a large bill, so they remain in repayment.

M&A That Transformed the Industry with Shveta Mujumdar (Intuit)

M&A That Transformed the Industry with Shveta Mujumdar (Intuit)

    Episode Highlights:

    • After studying economics at USC, Shveta inadvertently fell into a career in M&A after seeing many of her peers pursue the same path. She  started out at Deloitte’s mid-market investment banking practice.
    • She then was able to steer important M&A decisions on the sell side as a leader in corporate development at Lynda, where she played a key role in Linkedin’s acquisition of the company.
    • It was this transaction that encouraged Shveta to think beyond just the mechanics of M&A activities and more about how the entire process impacts  employees through the transition at large.
    • Today, Shveta oversees more of the buy-side of M&A as the SVP of Corporate Development at Intuit where she has managed the acquisition of Mailchimp and Credit Karma.
    • Reflecting on these deals, Shveta stresses that every deal is complex and unique in its own right.
    • She shares learning from Credit Karma how to navigate a deal with potential regulatory scrutiny and from Mailchimp  how to operate in a very competitive and quick process.
    • Shveta talks about gender dynamics in the M&A world and the way she personally creates space for access in her role.

My Pep Talk From Maria Brito (Art Curator, Advisor & Author) on Creative Reinvention, Career Pivots & Solitude

My Pep Talk From Maria Brito (Art Curator, Advisor & Author) on Creative Reinvention, Career Pivots & Solitude

This episode is a conversation with art advisor, curator, and author Maria Brito about career and creative pivots when things aren’t working, reinvention, using intuition in work and art, the importance of solitude, and much more. She tells me about her trajectory of growing up in Venezuela, moving to the states to go to Harvard Law School and becoming a corporate attorney before making her own career pivot into the art world, where she eventually became a top art advisor.

Maria's kindness is always evident throughout and especially in a section towards the beginning where she gives me a real creative advising session after I share about needing a career pivot myself. She gives me gentle and wise advice, which I’ve since been working on.

We recorded this a couple of months ago over Zoom and since then, her new book called: How Creativity Rules The World: The Art and Business of Turning Your Ideas Into Gold is now available everywhere.

In the Weeds: Herbalist Vanessa Chakour on Our Earthly Bodies

In the Weeds: Herbalist Vanessa Chakour on Our Earthly Bodies

This week I spoke with herbalist and author Vanessa Chakour. At 17, a life-threatening accident led Vanessa to heal her eating disorder and work through sexual assault trauma, which in turn led to her becoming a professional boxer, eventually bringing her to New York City where she began studying herbalism. Now, she’s an author and educator who trains others in her field of helping people to connect to their environments. Her work is rooted in the natural world and what she calls our own inner-wild, or our intuitive connection to ourselves.

In this episode we cover the connection between eating disorder recovery and our bodies connecting to nature as well as how consent and anger relate to weeds like dandelion. We get into making herbal infusions and the creative process; writing for emotional wellness; navigating highs such as new relationships and career successes (Vanessa's in one of those highs now); and how to manage the nervous system during both highs and lows. We also discuss her new book, Awakening Artemis.
