Supporting Moms Through Trauma With Terri Butler Brown

As a licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, and a cherished member of our online herbal mentorship, Apothecary Momma, Terri shared her perspective on the lack of support for women in recovery. We explored generational trauma, societal expectations, harsh judgment, and the intensified guilt and shame faced by pregnant women with substance use or mental health issues.

Terri passionately believes in the healing potential of herbs and envisions them as a revolution in recovery, prenatal care and family care.Ā  We also explored Terri's personal journey into herbalism, starting with health challenges leading to a hysterectomy to the transformative experience of her grandson moving in. Her study of herbs improved their well-being, and her grandson now actively participates in choosing and incorporating them into their routine.

She emphasized the importance of reclaiming ancestral knowledge lost due to societal changes and misinformation. Terri's dedication to healing others and integration of herbal medicine left a lasting impact. Our conversation deepened my admiration for her and shed light on the profound trauma experienced by many women, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to support.

This heartfelt conversation with Terri provides valuable insights and personal stories, showcasing the power of herbalism. I encourage you to tune in and share this episode with other moms who may find inspiration in Terri's journey.Ā

In the Weeds: Herbalist Vanessa Chakour on Our Earthly Bodies

This week I spoke with herbalist and author Vanessa Chakour. At 17, a life-threatening accident led Vanessa to heal her eating disorder and work through sexual assault trauma, which in turn led to herĀ becoming a professional boxer, eventually bringing her to New York City where she began studying herbalism. Now, sheā€™s an author and educator who trains others in her field of helping people to connect to their environments. Her work is rooted in the natural world and what she calls our own inner-wild, or our intuitive connection to ourselves. Ā Ā

In this episode we cover the connection between eating disorder recovery and our bodies connecting to nature as well as how consent and anger relate to weeds like dandelion. We get into making herbal infusions and the creative process; writing for emotional wellness; navigating highs such as new relationships and career successes (Vanessa's in one of those highs now); and how to manage the nervous system during both highs and lows. We also discuss her new book, Awakening Artemis.

Everything Would Break, with Jana Opincariu

Today we are speaking with artist Jana Opincariu, who lives in San Pedro. I was introduced to Janaā€™s work in June of 2020, at her solo exhibition, Meditations in Solidarity, a collection of paintings created during the pandemic at Hellada Gallery in Long Beach. A striking exhibit, it featured works from Janaā€™s Black Series, her Beautiful Grotesque series and other works ā€” all of which demanded unremitting attention.

Hyper-realistic is just one way to describe this young artist's work. Jana creates images of human bodies, objects and animals that are surreal and fantasticalā€”and some with macabre undertones.Ā

Jana originally studied to become a medical lab scientist but decided to follow her true passion: art. She graduated with a dual bachelorā€™s in art history and studio art from University of New Mexico, with a focus on ancient Latin American art and European art through the centuries. Jana works in photography, printmaking and lithography but her passion is painting.Ā Ā

She finds inspiration from her studies of Spanish and Italian Baroque, her travels, nature, and her dreams.

Jana has shown in multiple cities across the Southwest and the Pacific coast. Her breakout show, Totem, a September 2019 collaboration with internationally known artist, Daniel Kathalynas, at the Ā Factory on 5th in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

    Janaā€™s other recent exhibitions include:
Intro to Black and Gold: A Series in Conversation solo show, Albuquerque Press Club January 2020
Black and Gold I: with TWO separate solo shows, Boxing Bear and Tractory Brewery in Albuquerque February-April 2020
Art in Sensuality 2021: Group Show, Hellada Gallery, Long Beach, February 2021 and 2022
The Harper 420 Golf Invitational Art Exhibition: Group Show, San Pedro, pop up April, 2021
