Welcome heathens welcome to the world of the weird and unexplained. I’m your host, Nicole Delacroix and together, we will be investigating stories about the weird, wonderful, unexplained, eerie, scary and down-right unbelievable. There will be tales of ghosts, murder, supernatural beings and unexplained mysteries. So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, relax and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma....

And on today’s Dark enigma and welcome to a new year and a new episode. This year I’m going to try to be a little more predictable as some of you pointed out that I did a large number of ghosts and murders but hardly any strange creatures or aliens. I vow to bring more aliens, monsters and what not into your lives. So on that note, let’s turn to today’s offering, but before we do, we will still be playing our drinking game and as you know, the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. For tonight’s game the choice of libation is up to you, so choose your venom accordingly… Alright, now for the game part how about every time I say Devil that will be a single shot and every time I say music, that will be a double shot. Ok, now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s dark enigma… and True tales of real deals with the devil himself!

One very pervasive element and motif of various tales and folklore around the world is the concept of making a deal with the Devil, or some similarly powerful demon, wherein a pact is formed typically involving an exchange of one’s soul for a myriad of sinister, diabolical favors such as fame, wealth, power, youth, vigor, or exceptional skill in a profession. Indeed such stories of wagering one’s soul for these supernatural benefits and gifts are so ingrained in various cultures, especially ones based in Christianity, that “to make a deal with the Devil” has become a common colloquial proverb in many places. Yet as entwined as the idea of these diabolical pacts may be with myth, legend, fiction and folklore, there have been over the centuries those who have been said to have allegedly made very real, literal bargains with the actual Devil himself or at least potent demons. These are strange tales which have caused such pacts to stretch out from fiction into the real world, suggesting that not only are they purportedly possible, but that demonic entities and even Satan himself somehow in fact really exist.

    Mandara Cromwell—Making Sound Visible

    Mandara Cromwell—Making Sound Visible

We began hearing Mandara sing Gregorian chant in a gothic cathedral and watching halos on saints vibrate in response. We followed her as she followed sound to the Rig Vedas, Indian temple construction, Ayurvedic science, Chinese medicine meridians, even the Roslyn Chapel where sound is frozen in stone. Everything comes together in the new science of sound healing through cymatics. Listening to Mandara, your ears will open to a whole new love affair with the sacred power of sound.

After a lifetime of exploring the relationship of ancient sacred healing arts and sound, Mandara Cromwell invented the AMI, Acoustic Meridian Intelligence device, an advanced sound technology nominated for the Thomas Edison Award for Innovation in the Fields of Science and Medicine. She studied cymatics with Dr Peter Manners and coined the term cymatherapy to refer to wave therapy based on his work. Groundbreaking images of the healing frequencies of her sound therapy devices are now available in her book Soundflower.

    Babe

    Babe

In order to lighten the mood, Karen chose to watch "Babe," which Greg has never seen. Since talking animal films are much more common today, is "Babe" not as sweet as Karen imagined? And what will Greg think of the sheepdog hijinx? All of your questions will be answered, and more, in the ninth episode of 1995 The Podcast.

    32: Dissolution

    32: Dissolution

To kick off season two, Jake Goldman joins Jen to tackle history and mystery in the novel Dissolution by C.J. Sansom. The book takes place in Tudor England and follows a hunchback lawyer as he's sent by Lord Cromwell to investigate a murder at a country monastery during Henry VIII's dissolution of papist religious houses. Naturally Jake and Jen get into relevant details like what constituted getting to third base with someone in 1537.

An important note on spoilers! Jake and Jen discuss who the killer is from 50:47-57:33. If you haven't read the book but want to, you can safely listen to the rest of the episode and just avoid that spoiler-y portion.
