61 - Jen Oshman on Cultural Counterfeits, Abortion, the LGBTQ Movement, and Idolatry

61 - Jen Oshman on Cultural Counterfeits, Abortion, the LGBTQ Movement, and Idolatry

In this episode I talk with Jen Oshman about her book, Cultural Counterfeits. Jen is church planting wife, author, women’s ministry director, a speaker. She has been published at Desiring God, Crossway, The Gospel Coalition, Tim Challies, Risen Motherhood, Unlocking the Bible, Church Leaders, A Life Overseas, and she is a staff writer at Gospel-Centered Discipleship.

In her book, she explores cultural counterfeits to Christianity which many people are prone to believe today. Using the paradigm of idolatry, she examines topics such as abortion and the LGBTQ movement and their deception.

We also talk about the dustup from her article (based on a chapter from her book) on how Christian women idolize marriage and family. We consider various critiques of her article and approach on this topic.

Freedom to Flourish in Christ - with Lydia Brownback

Freedom to Flourish in Christ - with Lydia Brownback

In this episode, I’m welcoming back to the podcast, Lydia Brownback to talk about her book, Flourish: How the Love of Christ Frees Us from Self-Focus. This book deals with so many of the shapes that self-focus takes and we discuss a few of them, including self-improvement, self-analysis, and self-condemnation. We also discuss discipleship and community in light of this topic and how we can encourage one another to be freed from focusing on ourselves, rather than Christ and what He’s done for us.

We're so glad Lydia joined the podcast again, and even more excited to welcome her to come speak at our Women Encouraged conference in Western Canada on April 17-18, 2020. Connect with us on Instagram or Facebook to stay up-to-date with the details on that event!

Episode 41: "How Is Your Phone Changing You?" with Tony Reinke

Episode 41: "How Is Your Phone Changing You?" with Tony Reinke

It's been over fifty years since media theorist Marshall McLuhan said that "First we shape our tools, and then our tools shape us." McLuhan had push back as folks wondered at the time if what he was saying was true. But time has proven McLuhan's theory to be correct. Now that we've hit the ten year anniversary of the launch of the iPhone, we're beginning to see how much our smartphones are shaping and changing our lives. How do our devices shape our beliefs and behaviors? What do they reflect about what's most important in our lives? And how can we use these magnificent tools to the glory of God, rather than in ways that are destructive? We'll be talking to Tony Reinke, author of the new book "12 Ways Your Phone Is Changing You," about this and much more, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.
