Who’s getting credit for this internship? What’s the fastest brain surgery available to forget this episode? And who’s got the hot potato takes this week? We scout the answers to these questions and more as we watch Season 5, Episode 21 of Family Matters.

Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.

Creating A Safe Place To Fail | Pete Murray on Boy Scouts, Leadership, Fatherhood

Creating A Safe Place To Fail | Pete Murray on Boy Scouts, Leadership, Fatherhood

There’s no argument that we, as humans, learn from our mistakes. As we grow, we apply learnings from our negative or challenging experiences in order to be happier, more comfortable, or more prepared in the future. As parents though, it can be a challenge to give our children the opportunity to fail at something—especially when we have the foresight to see it coming and the ability to prevent it. But is it doing our kids justice if we always shield them from the often valuable lessons that come from failing? Our guest Pete Murray, a father of two teenagers and former Boy Scouts of America troop leader, says no. Pete joins us to chat about his childhood in the Boy Scouts program, and the art of balancing Scoutmaster and Dad.

Episode 70 of Modern Dadhood opens with a brief session of commiserating about emotional children and the desire to leave one's body in order to escape the drama. The guys begin talking about Boy Scouts of America. Though neither Adam nor Marc participated in the program, they ponder about the values of the organization before welcoming Pete Murray into the chat. Pete works for Firaxis Games by day, and until recently, served as Scoutmaster for his teenage son's Boy Scouts troop. Pete candidly shares his experiences with Boy Scouts both as a scout he was growing up, and as a leader when his son went through the program. Pete shares a lesson that he learned during his time with Boy Scouts which centers around the notion of failing in a safe environment, and learning from your mistakes to become a more experienced and well rounded person. Other topics include:

    •  Pete's journey spanning multiple roles at Firaxis Games
    •  Boy Scouts as a family tradition
    •  The value of giving young people opportunities to fail and learn from their mistakes
    •  Positive peer pressure
    •  Dad bonding
    •  And more!

    Do The Opposite

    Do The Opposite

Neil Krauter Sr. currently works as part of the Executive Committee at Risk Strategies, the 11th largest insurance broker in operation. Earlier in his career he worked as Vice Chairman of Aon Risk Services in New York and Global Practice Leader of AMAG, the Aon Merger & Acquisition Group. After a short retirement at age 40, Neil Krauter re-entered the brokerage world with The Krauter Group in 2004.

Neil Krauter Sr. graduated from Franklin & Marshall College where he earned a BA in economics.

    In this episode….

Neil Krauter Sr. grew up in Rumson, New Jersey and was the first male Krauter to graduate from college. He was always a competitive person and even in his youth was determined to succeed. During his time in Cub Scouts he won the peanut brittle fundraising sales contest in his first year with a sales total nobody in the country had ever reached. The second year he sold ten times as much. His secret was to sell the brittle two towns away where there were no Cub Scouts.
This sense of ambition and of doing things his own way served him well throughout his career. As Neil tells Martin, he found that adopting a strategy of doing the opposite of what was expected was the best way to compete. He explains how he structured his company so he wouldn’t have to manage people. He prefers to work with no org chart so there are no assigned titles or hierarchy.

In this episode of What CEOs Talk About, host Martin Hunter and Neil Krauter Sr. discuss Neil’s lengthy career and how he leveraged his experience in launching his own brokerage. Neil shares his thoughts on HR, on creating a forum for conversation within an organization, and how success requires both planning and full commitment. Neil gives examples of how he achieved innovative breakthroughs in business by doing the opposite of what might be expected.
