Ep.21: Moon Knight Volume 7: From the Dead, Dead Will Rise & In the Night (Marvel Comics)

Ep.21: Moon Knight Volume 7: From the Dead, Dead Will Rise & In the Night (Marvel Comics)

The 2014-2015 run of Moon Knight had many hands on it. But it also helped redefine the Marc Spector's mental status and connection to Egyptian God, Konshu and introduce new elements to the character, and telling a number of striking, single issue stories along the way.

Warren Ellis, Brian Wood and Cullen Bunn take Moon Knight and place him against punk rock ghosts, angry ex-military vigilantes, brilliant doctors looking for vengeance on an international scale, dogs trained to kill the rich, and many more fun tales for the protector of travelers at night to deal with.

Interview: Cullen Bunn talks Shadowman, future plans, and Godzilla vs. Power Rangers

    1. Cullen, thank you for being on the AIPT Comics podcast. It seems fitting you’re here to talk Shadowman, you were on way back in March to talk about the first arc, and we are now embarking on the second story arc this week. What has the fan response been like so far?
    2. Something about Shadowman that works is how it blends the superhero fighting and the horror elements too. Do you approach scripting in a different way to blend the two?
    3. Issue 5 catches readers up on the story up top. How do you balance exposition and action in a way that feeds off each other?
    4. PEDRO ANDREO joins the series with #5, was there a specific panel that blew your socks off?
    5. Shadowman feels like it’s setting up a very long run, how far out have you plotted this story?
    6. What can we expect from the Deadside War and how it affects the wider Valiant universe?
    7. The horror movie homage variant is incredible, what are your thoughts on The Thing? JONATHAN MARKS BARRAVECCHIA
    8. The Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers crossover is coming at IDW, firstly, how has this not happened yet?!
    9. Where does your heart lie with PowerRangers and Godzilla specifically?

Segment: Interview: Tim Sheridan - We talk Masters of the Universe: Revelation #2 out 8/11, Shazam #2 out 8/17, Long Halloween Part 2 out on Blu-RayAugust 10, and more!

    1. Tim Sheridan, thank you for being on the AIPT Comics podcast for the third time this year! [ let him talk…] There is a lot ot congratulate you on since we last spoke, including Batman the Long Halloween Part 2 being released, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: REVELATION #2 out next week, and the ongoing mystery of Red X too. How has the reader response been to these works?
    2. Next week we’re also getting Shazam! #2, and it’s turning out to be a Billy Batson and Dane Constantine team up! I’d call this a “hero lost his mojo story” would that be accurate?
      1. Is it every writer’s dream to tell a story in Hell?
    3. When it comes to comics creation versus writing for television, are there pros and cons to the speed in which the content is released and audience feedback can be registered? control**
    4. When approaching a text that’s kind of sacred like the original Long Halloween, how do you decide what stays and what goes?
    5. I love that you kept the year two aspect in mind and really leaned into Batman being a bit more green. How did that affect how you approached the character?
    6. Has it created a desire to write a more seasoned Batman in the future?
    7. Gilda is given so much more agency in this story, which I love. Honestly, all of the women are. Was that a conscious decision or did it just come about in the scripting process.
    8. Selina gets so much more to do in this version of the story. What do you think the key is to Batman and Catwoman’s relationship?
    9. What has the collaboration process been like on the MOTU comic, with Kevin Smith and Rob David outlining the story and then you taking it to the scripting process?
    10. Okay, let’s talk Orko. For me, he was the absolute heart of Revelation Part 1. How did it feel to write his big moment?

Segment: Jed MacKay - Magic (the Gathering), Black Cat (Michael Dowling), Avengers Mech Strike, Taskmaster (just wrapped up), and upcoming Moon Knight in July (art by Alessandro Cappuccio).

    1. Jed, congratulations on launching Magic at BOOM! Studios last week. When approached to write this one, how did you begin to hone your story when you’re working off a universe that’s huge?
    2. There’s clearly a love for this universe on display here. Were you a fan of Magic the Gathering going into the project?
    3. Of course, there are cards you can purchase to understand the lore of Magic the Gathering, but are there any books you used as a resource when creating this world?
    4. Was there anything in Magic #1 that Ig Guara positively crushed and surprised you with?
    5. Black Cat #5 is out this week and kicked off a new story arc called The Gilded City. Given what is stolen in this issue...will you ever run out of things to heist and do you have a running list of items for Black Cat to steal?
    6. Infinite Destinies is slated to start in June, but it was delayed due to COVID! Was the series of annuals completed and shelved, or was it pencils down until a new release date was set?
    7. What a busy summer for you, with Moon Knight launching in July. Congrats! Your interview with comicbook.com goes into Khonshu being imprisoned in Asgard which means Moon Knight (and Mr. Knight) is going it alone. It also suggests he’ll be a protector of those traveling at night, might we expect an episodic approach to the series, with a different thing or person needing protecting each issue?
    8. You’ve also said there will be no thought bubbles or captions to help convey his alienation, are there any stylistic choices you’ve made for any of your other works?
    9. Some of the most iconic Moon Knight covers have his costume positively shredded, can you comment on why that is and if he has a great tailor?
    10. Considering your current Marvel slate, which show do you think would make the best-animated series: Mech Strike, Black Cat, or Moon Knight?
    11. Are there any other projects you’d like to discuss or plug today?

    1. Congratz on Shadowman, I understand speaking to Dennis Hopeless (twice now on this podcast!) Shadowman has been in the works for some time?
    2. At this point it’s safe to say you’re a horror maestro, with Harrow County as just one of your works that’s a shoe in for classic, you have Eden at AfterShock coming in May, how has writing great horror for so long shaped your vision of Shadowman?

    6. Has there been any panels or pages Hunt’s done that topped anything you could imagine?
    7. What is something a Shadowman comic MUST DO to be a Shadowman comic?
    8. It’s still early yet, but Dennis Hopeless pointed out an event tying into X-O Manowar was in the cards, is that still a possibility?
    9. Your Punk Mambo miniseries was a blast - any chance we’ll be seeing her turn up in the near future?
    10. You've been making comics for many years, congratz on that, if this were a 100 meter dash, where are you now, what were your record-beating moments (still on the metaphor), and what goals do you see yourself at 75, 95, and 100 meters?
    11. Are there any other books you’d like to discuss today?

Episode 103: 'The Empty Man' review & revisiting Westerns

Episode 103: 'The Empty Man' review & revisiting Westerns

A while back, the guys wondered discussed the decline of Westerns in Hollywood. Based on comments they have received, the three decided it was time to take a second look at the topic. Danny, Blake, and Nathaniel also talk about 'The Empty Man'. Based on the comic series by Cullen Bunn, the comic is one of the most mismanaged movies of 2020. Does that make it any better?

The show starts with talk about another big announcement from a streaming channel. Shudder has announced their plans for the beginning of 2021 and they are exciting. Plus, the three talk about what they are looking forward to at Sundance including an El Paso documentary and lots of horror movies.

The Empty Man will go down as one of the most mishandled movies of all time. The movie was promoted a week before its release and even then the trailer did not accurately represent the movie. Danny, Blake, and Nathaniel try to unravel one of the most confusing movies in recent years.

The main segment this week is on Westerns. Danny, Blake, and Nathaniel try to cover the items brought up by listeners. They talk more about older Westerns, look to the future of the genre, and discuss why it has not had the lasting appeal of other genres.

Adventures in Movies! is hosted by Nathaniel Muir, Blake, and Danny. You can find Nathaniel on Instagram at nathaninpoortaste. Cullen Bunn Talks Shadowman And Its Potential to Be the Next Black Panther

Cullen Bunn Talks Shadowman And Its Potential to Be the Next Black Panther

Comic book writer Cullen Bunn chats to Fortress of Solitude’s Sergio Pereira about his upcoming run on Valiant Comics’ Shadowman relaunch. The discussion also touches on Jack Boniface’s potential to be as big as Black Panther.

Originally created in 1992, Shadowman is a character that lit up comics in the ‘90s, becoming a top-selling book and leading to the successful Shadow Man video game. While the character has experienced several comic books and reboots, the latest could be the best as it features the genius of horror comic writer Cullen Bunn.

The Cullen Bunn Shadowman run is already getting tongues wagging, and Valiant Entertainment looks like it might have a hit on its hands. The only question is, how big will it be?

Listen to the Cullen Bunn interview and let us know what you think in the comments section down below. And don’t forget to subscribe to the Fortress of Solitude podcast on your favourite streaming platform!

SEGMENT: Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler Undone by Blood

    1. Can you tell us a little about the world of Undone by Blood and the stories or other media that inspired it? Zac, you often make mood boards for your projects - what did this one look like?
    2. How did you land on the two-story structure for Undone By Blood? Do you have different notes, design documents, research for each half?
    3. How do you split up the work for a co-written title?
    4. Do you two bounce ideas off of either for your solo titles (Black Stars Above, The Replacer)? Where do you personally feel the “co-creator” line starts?
    5. Top 3 westerns (book or movies)?
    6. Is there a significance to one of the plots taking place in 1971?
    7. Does the title or genre of a book often come before the plot of the story (i.e. you have an idea of where you want to tell a story but not necessarily what story) or vice versa?
    8. Is it easier or harder to sell genre stories? What was the original pitch for Undone By Blood?
    9. What do you like about revenge stories?
    10. There’s some impressive layout work here, for instance, the gutters also serve as prison bars in issue #2...do you have a treasure chest of layout ideas you think up and save for later, or is this something that’s more organic working with the artist?
    11.  Yondu exit interview...how do we feel about your 5 issue mini?!
    12. Do you see thematic or narrative cross over between Undone By Blood and other works like Yondu, Black Stars Above, etc. or do you actively work to avoid similarities?
    13. Last but not least, how do you think Yondu would fare in the world of Undone By Blood?
