Episode 99 | Sharks vs swimmers | Geothermal energy | Religion dos and don't

Episode 99 | Sharks vs swimmers | Geothermal energy | Religion dos and don't

A priest resigned after it was announced that thousands of baptisms he had performed were invalid because he had changed a single word. He said, "we baptize you" instead of "I baptize you". I explain why this is a complete joke and is a bad look for religion.
Also, a woman had a nail hammered into her head in order to try and have a baby boy.
Elephant poop used to filter South African gin.
Two sisters were naked and fighting at Disney World in Florida.
My son has been watching the movie Titanic… So I've been fast-forwarding through the naughty scenes. And I'm curious of what he thinks about the water scene with Rose and Jack.
Geothermal energy is the hot new idea to save the world and fix the energy problem. But, it's tragedy just waiting to happen.
A 14 1/2 foot great white shark killed a swimmer in Sydney Australia. Now, some residents are demanding a shark culling.
Would you spend $50k to clone your dog? How about $35k for your cat? No, that's dumb.

    42. Lee Harding: Biologist on Wolves & Caribou in BC

    42. Lee Harding: Biologist on Wolves & Caribou in BC

Lee Harding is a father, grandfather, biologist, environmental consultant, hunter, and researcher. In this conversation, Aaron and Lee talk about the wolf culling that is taking place in British Columbia. Aerial wolf reduction involves the shooting of wolves from a helicopter, which the province claims is the most effective and humane way to reduce wolf populations in remote areas to protect Caribou. Mr. Harding's research suggests this is inaccurate, and in the conversation they discuss viable alternatives.

After graduating from a California university with a B.Sc. degree in Wildlife Management (1970), Lee guided for a season in northern British Columbia, hunting Stone’s sheep, moose, caribou and mountain goats. He consulted in wildlife ecology in the Arctic for five years, where he worked closely with First Nations trappers in studies of furbearers, muskoxen and caribou. He was an Environment Canada biologist and program manager for 20 years, and after taking early retirement from the Canadian Wildlife Service, went to Japan for a PhD in Wildlife Toxicology from Gifu University (2003). He was an environmental consultant for another 20 years (1998–2007). Dr. Harding is a Registered Professional Biologist in British Columbia, Canada and a member (retired) of the College of Applied Biology (B.C.), the American Society of Mammalogists and the British Columbia Field Ornithologists. Most of his writing is in government technical reports, technical reports for consulting clients and newspaper/magazine articles.

Interview #15 South London Hunt Sabs | Sabbing 2.0

Interview #15 South London Hunt Sabs | Sabbing 2.0

TW: NO graphic details but very occasional use of strong language.

Charlie Moores talks with two exceptionally inspirational animal rights activists, Jake and Saffron from South London Hunt Sabs - a group that just a year after it was launched seems to be all over social media and, in the well-worn cliche, punching far above its weight.

The discussion took place just off the M25 in the car park of a well-known coffee company, and it quickly became obvious that these two individuals are not only eloquent and highly committed but balance and bounce off each other really well. The interview takes in hunts, animal culls, biased policing, and the behaviour of hunt followers but the answer to Charlie's first question asking how the group's message had spread so far in such a short time, set the tone for what was an enjoyable and uplifting conversation....

    John Galante - Episode 51

This week we do a zoom call with Ed’s dad, John  Galante. He wanted to do this episode to rebut some of the topics from episode 50 so we gave him a chance. Although this was made for him to defend himself we were on the attack. Ed rates this episode a 3.5 so make sure you listen since that is a pretty good score. Also listen closely to “daddy” using the wrong words often and continually cursing which is edited. We hope you enjoy our final episode with Ed’s dad.

232 - The Great Emu War

232 - The Great Emu War

The Great Emu War! Such a weird and fun tale to tell. What an odd historical period. As World War I came to an end, Australia - whose economy was tanking, tried to figure out what to do with their returning veterans. They decided to give many of them parcels of land in Western Australia where they could grow wheat. And then the Great Depression hit.
It hit countries all over the world, and few harder than Australia, and it hit few Australians harder than many of those veteran farmers. They now struggled to sell their wheat. And then, the emus started showing up and eating what little wheat they had left! Lots of emus. Around 20,000 of them. Australia’s national bird became a national pest, and desperate farmers reached out to the Australian government for help. They reached out to the Ministry of War. And the government sent them three soldiers, armed with two machine guns and a film crew. Probably should’ve sent in a lot more troops and a lot more guns - the emus were a much more formidable foe than anticipated. We return to the land down under today to suck Australia’s Great Emu War - on this bird-brained, machine gun, invasive creature edition, of Timesuck.

Why are male chicks culled in the egg industry and how can this be changed? With Mark Tizard from CSIRO

Why are male chicks culled in the egg industry and how can this be changed? With Mark Tizard from CSIRO

Brian Daly interviews Dr Mark Tizard, senior scientist and project leader at CSIRO.

Mark started his career in the early days of gene cloning as part of the team that was first to identify and produce a candidate vaccine for malaria. After this he went on to complete a PhD and postdoctoral project in microbiology and gene technology before coming to Australia to work at CSIRO. After many advancements in the emerging field of gene editing, and fast forward to the present day, Mark’s team have been able to identify a method to remove males from the egg laying industry without even having to hatch or cull day old chicks.

Join us in this episode as we unpack this gene editing technology with Mark and find out more about how this could be a very real solution to end male chick culling.

    Key points:

    • What happens with male chicks in the egg industry
    • What is gene editing and is it different to genetic modification
    • How can gene editing technology be used to stop the culling of male chicks
    • What are the challenges in this technology becoming commercially available

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ನಾಯಿಗಳು. The Dogs of Bengaluru.

Can any of us truly imagine a Bengaluru without dogs? No pets, no dogs anywhere on the street? The journey of humanity has been tied to the evolution of dogs for at least 40,000 years.

But how are the dogs of Bengaluru faring? How well are city residents caring for their pet dogs? How well are we taking care of stray dogs? On Episode 53 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast, Sudha Narayanan and Dr Lohith HD join Ganesh Chakravarthi to talk about the many lakh canine residents of Bengaluru.

Ms Sudha S Narayanan is the Founder Trustee of CARE , and has worked for over two decades on animal welfare, both domestic and wild. She was formerly a trustee with CUPA and WRRC. Charlie's Animal Rescue Centre – CARE was established in January 2013, and currently has a campus at Mitteganahalli, Yelahanka. The trust is inspired by 15-year-old Charlie, a differently abled, 3 legged Indian therapy dog.

Dr HD Lohith is one of Bengaluru's leading veterinarians and a gifted orthopedician. He runs Bangalore Pet Hospital and Maruthi Pet Care Centre, and regularly conducts complicated surgeries pro bono at CARE. He has over 50,000 surgeries to his credit till date.
