Finding a Cure for Civilisation: Delving Deep into the Roots of Being with visionary and shaman, Drea Burbank of Savimbo.

“Respect is earned. Honesty is appreciated. Trust is gained. Loyalty is returned.”

    — Oscar Auliq Ice - quoted on Savimbo website

In this pivotal episode, we journey with Drea Burbank from the depths of a fundamentalist Mormon cult to the rainforests of the Colombian Amazon. Drea's life story, chronicled in her book "Shaman Gurl" (linked in the show notes), is a testament to human resilience and the quest for truth. From her escape over the mountains, through the fiery trials of being a firefighter, to her awakening during medical school, Drea's path has been anything but conventional.

Now, as a co-founder of Savimbo, Drea is part of an extraordinary mission: to introduce a human rights code for nature. With the support of 60 indigenous leaders from across the globe, she is leading the charge to bring legislation to the UN that enshrines the rights of nature into law. This episode is an urgent call to recognize the voice of nature and the indigenous custodians who have preserved 30% of the planet's intact land and 80% of its biodiversity.

Drea's conversation is a revelation of the indigenous perspective on ecotourism, cultural competency, and the necessity of a post-colonial lifestyle. She shares the transformative impact of ecotourism training programs and the importance of creating safe spaces for spiritual awakening in a world that often suppresses regrowth. As she and her colleagues prepare to share their vision with the world through a series of powerful videos, we invite you to become bridges for this crucial movement. Follow Savimbo across social media platforms, amplify the voices of these indigenous leaders, and help turn the tide towards a future where the rights of nature are not just recognized but revered.

For those who are ready to be part of this monumental shift, to stand with the guardians of our planet's remaining wilderness, this episode is an essential listen. Join us as we explore the profound connections between human healing and planetary health, where the fight for nature's rights is a fight for our collective future.

We were speaking on a starlink and we lost the connection several times so I apologise in advance for any glitches in the conversation, but this was solid gold and I wasn't going to let minor issues of technology get in the way of your hearing it. Enjoy!

Integrating Clinical Perspectives into Healthcare Design | NIHD Roundtable

Integrating Clinical Perspectives into Healthcare Design | NIHD Roundtable

You've joined us for a very special episode! Our team at Carolina did some research and pulled together leaders from the Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design (NIHD) to discuss how clinicians and designers are partnering to create better healthcare environments. We also discuss the impact of spaces on burnout, emerging research, and new opportunities for clinicians interested in healthcare design.

So, how can we integrate clinicians into the design process? It starts at the beginning. One common mistake is bringing clinicians in when it's "too late." Including nurses and clinicians early in the process ultimately saves money in the long run. Designing a space correctly from the start is much cheaper than redesigning spaces later.

Another issue that can be solved by design is clinician burnout. Providing quiet spaces for respite, incorporating nature into stairwells, and using daylighting inside are all examples of needed design solutions to help clinicians combat burnout. Spaces affect emotions more than you know and there's research to prove it. In this episode, we talk about the innovative approaches like AI and biometrics that are being used to understand spaces and how they affect you.

If you're a clinician and you want to get involved, start now. Whether the project is big or small, get involved and contribute your voice in any way you can. There's more and more potential for new careers that blend nursing and design. NIHD is passionate about its mission and committed to advocating for clinical input in healthcare design.

Ep. 7 - Your Hair Is Not A Threat

Ep. 7 - Your Hair Is Not A Threat

In the seventh episode of On Being Biracial, hosts Daralyse Lyons and Malcolm Burnley examine how skin color and visible appearances impact the lives of multiracial individuals. This installment delves into colorism, passing, privileges, hair, identity, and assimilation as they pertain to being mixed.

In this episode, you will learn:

    • What researchers have studied about multiracial hair, including the stress and anxiety that can come with negative hair experiences in a developmental age.

    • Why aspects of our appearances — including hair, jewelry, and clothing — can be a way to signal group identity, and minimize ambiguity, for mixed people.

    • How a mixed person's pigmentation and proximity to whiteness can provide certain advantages and privileges for biracial people, while also bringing about pains and anxieties.

    • How siblings can have vastly different experiences solely on the basis of things like hair tone or skin color while sharing the same biracial heritage.

This season's interviewees are: Ashanti Martin, Azaria Keys, Bárbara Idalissee Abadía-Rexach, Carter O'Brien Ford, Cat Dyson, Chantelle Fitzgerald, Charlotte Gill, David Ryan Barcega Castro-Harris, Drew Allmond, Evan Fong Jaroff, Hannah Wallace, Ian Burnley, Jewel Love, John Blake, Jourdin Davis, Kimberly Ortiz-Hartman, Lise Funderburg, Mat Johnson, Nora Elmarzouky, Rachael Go, Rachel Lauren, Samonte Cruz, Sandra Clark, Sarabella Rocha, Sarah Gaither, Sienna McWhirter, Tyla Taylor, Tyler Sloane, W Kamau Bell, Zein Hassanein, and Mark Hugo Lopez.

How to Tell Stories with Intention

How we tell stories matters - especially stories about yourself or someone else. This is especially true when sharing stories about overcoming hardship, which can easily be told in a way that exploits, rather than uplifts. In today's episode, Emilie sits down with professional storyteller, Dianne Myles, to learn more about what it means to tell stories from an asset-based lens as opposed to a deficit lens, and how to be more intentional about how we think of ourselves as the main character in our own life's story.

Health Tech Navigators: A Boon to Greater Community Access, Trust and Engagement

Health Tech Navigators: A Boon to Greater Community Access, Trust and Engagement

A patient portal is a great innovation, but busy clinic staff don’t have time to help every patient get set up on them and answer all their questions about it. In addition, patients often need ongoing support on how to communicate with their provider on the website, get updates, and access their health records.

Enter the Health Tech Navigators — people serving in a role that is for the community, by the community.  These Navigators, hired directly from the community, work closely with patients to support not only enrollment, but to increase portal use and to bridge gaps in healthcare accessibility that have long existed with language, culture, trust, and tech literacy. Listen to how the Los Angeles Department of Health Services (LADHS) created and supports its Health Tech Navigator program to surface a growing practice of cultural humility and competency in patient engagement.

Here’s where you can learn more about the people, places, and ideas in this episode:

    • Anshu Abhat MD, MPH, Director of Patient Engagement in the Office of Patient Access at LADHS
    • Mayra Ramirez, MSW, ASW, Staff Analyst, Program Manager with the Patient Engagement Program at LADHS
    • LA Health Portal App

2.8_First Responders as Last Resorts_Art Hsieh

Art Hsieh is Paramedic Program Director for the Public Safety Training Center at Santa Rosa Junior College where he also teaches. His career in emergency medical services spans nearly 40 years, including serving as president of the National Association of EMS Educators, presenting at conferences at home and abroad, and is the author of two books: The Paramedic Companion: A Case-Based Worktext, and EMT Exam for Dummies. I invite Art on the podcast for us to better understand the first responder’s perspective, particularly the paramedic’s, if iboga experiencers take a turn for the worse. It might be uncomfortable calling emergency services after taking an illicit substance, especially when that substance has many health risks, risks you might not have known or prepared for. Things can and do go pear-shaped for some people whether taking iboga at a retreat or in a more underground setting, and anticipating such scenarios literally can save your life. Topics of our discussion include: Art interrogates me paramedic-style about the iboga experience, serving as an example of what to expect when paramedics arrive on scene among other topics; cultural diversity in EMS; cultural competency, also known as “cultural humility”; abating danger through “scene size-up” and “scene safety” considerations; responding to situations in sacred settings; how EMS students are trained to handle non-ordinary states of consciousness; and preparing forward-thinking “cheat sheets” for first responders.
