Art Abroad #3: Jonathan Watkins on defining this period of art

Art Abroad #3: Jonathan Watkins on defining this period of art

“The art world is becoming arguably much more interesting now as a result of these kinds of developments,” says curator and director Jonathan Watkins in the third episode of Art Abroad. “I’m certainly not a lone voice, there are a lot of people challenging these fundamental assumptions about what we’re dealing with and why we’re dealing with it.”

While Art Abroad focusses on those involved in art who moved from Australia and ended up in London, Watkins is the director of the renowned Ikon gallery in Birmingham, two hours outside of London.

Born in the UK, at age 12 Watkins came to Australia with his parents. He studied art history in Sydney, and eventually moved back to London in the 1980s, holding curatorial roles at Chisenhale and Serpentine galleries.

In 1999 he became director of Ikon, a role he’s held for 23 years. Started in the 1960s, Ikon is a gallery that at once gives accessible and challenging notions of contemporary art. In an interesting link to Australia, Jonathan’s predecessor in the role was none other than Elizabeth Ann MacGregor. However after two decades at the gallery, Jonathan will be stepping down next month. We talk about this, as well as his moves to and from the UK, and the international outlook of his practice. He was the artistic director of the Biennale of Sydney in 1998, then headed the Tate Triennial in 2003, and the Shanghai Biennale in 2006—and that’s just to name a few.

Finally Watkins talks about making contemporary art accessible while not reducing its potency, and what will define this current period of art.

Curating Your Space. How Your Social Circle Can Make Rich Or Poor.

Curating Your Space. How Your Social Circle Can Make Rich Or Poor.

In this episode of the Financial Griot podcast, we talk about the importance of curating your physical, mental and virtual space.

The world is getting more complicated while tasks are becoming easier, and that's not a good thing. While it might sound ridiculous, you are suppose to have just 5 friends compared to Facebook's 5,000 limit. In truth, Social scientist Robin Dunbar hypothesized that an individual’s group can extend to 150 contacts. However, each contact is layered according to the strength of emotional ties.

As such, your mind is constantly trying to keep up with over 1,000 people, story lines and complications. It's no wonder why people are entrenched in camps and becoming burnt out.

Here's a bit about our background and who we are:

The Financial Griot is a play on two words (Finance + Griot) that hold significance in closing the racial wealth gap.

Merriam-Webster defines a Griot as a West African historian, storyteller, praise singer, poet, or musician. The griot is a repository of oral tradition and is often seen as a leader due to their position as an advisor to royal personages. As a result of the former of these two functions, they are sometimes called a bard.

As such, we tell the stories that others don't. Stories that we should share for growth, opportunity and understanding. Beyond that we talk about Finances. Specifically, how to become Financially literate, incorporating actionable steps and ultimately building generational wealth.

So there you have it, The Financial Griot or TFG for short. You will be in for a treat. The hosts were able to amass over $2 Million in wealth in about 8 years and are on track to retire early. If you want the secrets; we will gladly share them since opportunity is abundant and Win-Win.

Clayhill Arts - In The Studio Podcast with Claudia Kennaugh

In this episode we are joined by Claudia Kennaugh of Art & People; a new kind of art advisory, based in Bristol, which doesn’t just help the people who collect works of art, but also those who create it.

Claudia talks about working in London with her mother at Catherine Miller Gallery, which is where she honed her craft and understood the importance of connecting artists with collectors. Since then she has moved to Bristol and explains why she set up Art & People and what's been happening with her and the artists that she works with through the pandemic.

Sharing details of her upcoming online course for artists, as well as the other services she offers, we learn about the community that surrounds Art & People and why this is vital for an artist, especially now as we have been lacking connection with one another.

    Paola Antonelli on curating.

    Paola Antonelli on curating.

As regular listeners will know the idea behind the show is that I speak to a designer, maker, artist or architect about a material or technique with which they’re intrinsically linked and discover how it changed their lives and careers. However, every once in a while I mix the format up a bit and talk to someone who has an overview of the design world. This is one of those occasions.

Paola Antonelli is senior curator at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in the Department of Architecture & Design, as well as the institution’s founding director of Research and Development.

Over more than 25 years at the museum, she’s curated shows such as: Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design, Workspheres, and Design and the Elastic Mind. Most recently, she has been responsible for Broken Nature in Milan’s Triennale in 2019 and Neri Oxman: Material Ecology

She has lectured and given talks all over the world and picked up a fistful of awards, including 2020’s London Design Medal.

In collaboration with writer Alice Rawsthorn, her latest project, entitled Design Emergency, is a series of interviews on Instagram, which investigate design’s importance during the pandemic.

In this episode we discuss: coping with the crisis at MoMA; why she co-created Design Emergency as the virus took hold; falling into curating; the importance of rejection; creating the museum’s first-ever website; and how computer code is as fragile as ceramics.

It should be all about nurturing and tapping into social ecosystems.

The Design Museum's Deyan Sudjic on magazines and museums.

The Design Museum's Deyan Sudjic on magazines and museums.

At the time of recording Deyan Sudjic was the co-director of the London Design Museum. Although he has since stepped down from that role he remains a prolific author, essayist and curator and has been one of the most important figures in British design since the early ’80s.

Over the course of our chat we touch on an array of subjects, including: becoming an Oz Kid in the ’70s and the obscenity trial that ensued; growing up with his Yugoslavian parents; why he was a useless architecture student; starting Blueprintmagazine from his Docklands flat; taking over the Design Museum in difficult circumstances; and the decision to move the museum.

After controversy over allowing an arms dealer to use the space for a corporate evening, we also talk about how our arts institutions should be funded in the future. It is by turns eclectic, insightful and fascinating, from one of design’s most important voices.
