I’m Lynn and I have been a professional Union costume designer and wardrobe stylist for film and television Local 892, since 1996. One of my costume designs for Intel is a permanent archive, in the Smithsonian institution museum of natural history. I live in Los Angeles, California. I am the Co-founder of Sewn Adaptive a custom tailoring and alterations shop in Pasadena, CA. We specialize in adaptive alterations for people with disabilities.

I have been sewing since I was seven years old, self-taught until I went back to college the Academy of Art University in San Francisco for fashion design and interior design at 35 years old ,after being diagnosed severely dyslexic,.This is lengthy, but I’m 56 years old so I’ve done some living. In Spring of 2024 my first design as a Know Me licensee will be launched. One of the first licenses to be over 50.

I am the mother of three grown children who live in Utah and have four granddaughters, and a grandson on the way.  My husband, David, and I have been together for almost 10 years and he’s simply the best.

I am Alex, a Los Angeles based fashion designer with a background in tailoring and garment manufacturing. I studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and tailoring in Italy. I took the expertise I gained in both these places back to Los Angeles where I opened a small but very productive garment factory. I continued to create custom suits while expanding my experience in manufacturing as I took opportunities to manage factories in El Paso and Las Vegas. In 2022, I came together with Lynn Brannelly to create costumes for Cirque Du Soleil and later joined forces to tailor for Runway of Dreams, a runway show for people with disabilities to showcase adaptive fashion. We loved the idea of adaptive fashion and decided to fill a need opening the first Adaptive tailoring and alteration shop ever in Pasadena, California. We make custom clothing, adaptive accessories and alter clothes to specific disabilities every day and can’t wait to see what the future brings to Sewn Adaptive!

Mae Burrows - From Betsy Ross to Audrey Hepburn

Mae Burrows - From Betsy Ross to Audrey Hepburn

Although not a common combination, Mae’s father was a career Marine and an avid sewist. A direct descendant of Betsy Ross, he was born into a family of sewists, including his mother and grandmother. Mae grew up watching her father create quilts on his BERNINA machine and it was his love of sewing that inspired her to start sewing at the age of six. Mae was nine when her mother caught her cutting up her skirts and enrolled her in sewing school.

Even as a child, Mae was frustrated by the “by the book” approach of her sewing teacher. Although she had ideas for making her own clothes her way, the school’s strict adherence to the formal pattern-driven designs prevented her from doing so. Today, she’s free to create her designs on her terms, whether she’s sewing from a pattern or bringing her own vision to life.

Mae’s passion for sewing is driven by her belief in body positivity. “I know everyone is shaped differently. Some people are taller, shorter, or larger in some areas, and smaller in other areas. I want everyone just to look good, no matter what shape they are in. So I do a lot of custom work.”

Mae’s clients run the gamut—some are thin with very few curves, some are larger and curvaceous, but the one thing they have in common is that they all look great in the clothes Mae designs for them. Mae often makes clothing for her clients, without ever meeting them. She discusses their style and asks questions to help her determine the best shapes, like “are you bigger on the top or the bottom,” or “what are your measurements.”  If a person doesn’t know their measurements, she asked them what size they usually wear and goes from there.

Mae’s designs are comfortable and classic and are inspired by the timeless styles of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. Whenever she makes a dress or an outfit for someone, she wants it to be something they’ll look great in 10 years from now; something that is high-quality and won’t out of style. She believes that clothes should make a woman feel good about herself every time she wears it. (1:46-8:38)

Mae has had a lot of challenges in her life, including being hospitalized for COVID. When her doctor told her she had a 50/50 chance of surviving, she decided then and there that if she survived, she was going to always make time for what she loved, and that was sewing. And that’s exactly what she did. When Mae isn’t working at the fire department, she spends her time immersed in sewing: from learning more about it to experimenting with different tools to creating new designs.  She shares how different life challenges led her to where she is today and says that her dream for the future is to sew full-time and to help everybody look and feel their best in their clothes, and comfortable in their own skin. (8;40-26:27)

What is Demand Manufacturing? | The Way I See It

What is Demand Manufacturing? | The Way I See It

Demand manufacturing doesn't have to mean "made-to-order," or "small batch." Rather, keeping inventory digital until a customer order comes through actually allows fashion businesses to offer MORE options (colors, sizes, etc.) for their products, without maintaining physical inventory.

Ram Sareen explains how attention to fit inspired the concept of demand manufacturing in the apparel industry back in 2012.

Follow Your Heart | Linda MacMurdo, Owner of The BANTU Collection

Linda MacMurdo’s journey began in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It was there that she was born to an African mother and a native Pittsburgh father who was also a Peace Corps volunteer. Linda spent much of her young childhood in various African nations, as her father moved the family from place to place for work. Civil and political unrest in Africa eventually led her family back to the U.S. Two years ago, Linda decided to honor her African heritage by starting The BANTU Collection, an online boutique featuring custom-designed and handmade clothing, home décor, and accessories imported from Africa.

With financial support from a co-worker and a small Kiva loan, Linda was able to bring her dream to life. Anyone who has ever started a business knows how incredibly difficult it can be. Not only has she managed to launch a business, but she has done so in spite of cultural, language, and distance barriers that would intimidate even the most determined of entrepreneurs. Linda has thoughtfully curated a line of unique, unexpected, and skillfully made products through the relationships she has built with villages and artisans from her native homeland. The bespoke design and production process results in items that are truly one-of-a-kind. Today, Linda is realizing her vision of bringing the beautiful fashion designs and wide range of African styles to the American market.
