Loud & Proud- getting your voice on the airwaves with The Podcast Boutique founder Lynsay Gould

Loud & Proud- getting your voice on the airwaves with The Podcast Boutique founder Lynsay Gould

This week’s guest is Lynsay Gould founder and CEO of The Podcast Boutique, a podcast production company that champions indie podcasters and helps get more women’s voices heard through podcasting. She also started the Podcasting for Business Awards and most recently the podcast network We Are Emmeline.

It's been a tough few years for everyone. Typically for her though, she doubled down in her work as podcasting seemed to explode during the first lockdown. She’s realised even more than before how important freedom is in her life and work.

From a working class family, happy home, they had all they needed but not all they wanted. Her parents believed in her and she grew up hearing ' you can have anything or be anything you want if you work hard enough'. Always very entrepreneurial - full of ideas to make money and start mini businesses.

She left home for university before her mum got sick with Cancer so returned home to look after her. She passed away 2 weeks before she found out she was pregnant with her eldest daughter.

She fell into HR and was there for 20 years - wanted to help people but got disheartened by the job when it became more like a PR job and reputation management for the company she worked for.

Finding a lump in her throat that was suspected to be something sinister (believing that she'd lose her voice) she decided to start her podcast agency which is about helping women to use their voices and speak up and use their voices to be heard. Only 11% of top podcasts by women and she wants to change that.

Lynsay knows what she is working towards. Equality for women. No gender pay gap. More women in podcasting in front and behind the mic. It's why she started Emmeline podcast network.

She believes that using your voice no matter what, even when it feels like things are stacked against you. One voice can make a difference and create a ripple effect that can create change.

Thanks Lynsay for giving so many more woman a platform for speaking out in the world, and wishing you well with the Emmeline Network.

And thank you for showing us that when we use our voice to share our message, we can have a much greater influence in the world.

From Gangland to living the Dream, with filmmaker Aysha Scott

From Gangland to living the Dream, with filmmaker Aysha Scott

Aysha Scott is the founder & CEO of A Scott Productions. She embarked on her journey into filmmaking after discovering a gap in the market for black female characters during her career as an actress. During a difficult time in her life, when she was left to raise her 10 week old son alone, she took the plunge to become an independent filmmaker.

Pandemic has been a big reset for her- the film industry stopped overnight, film festivals went online, but Aysha put Dismissed, her anti-bullying film on You tube, and it went viral.

Working creatively on message and issue based work finds its roots in her background in which she grew up as one of 6 children to a single mum, living in Deptford in what was called The Ghetto.  She was in a gang until she realised she could choose another path, and she took herself off to college.

She set up a music and entertainment company Artistquik with a grant from The Prince’s Trust and won young entrepreneur of the year award from the Black Women in Business Awards. Then she retrained as an actress, working in film, TV & theatre as well as recitals of hard-hitting message-based poetry.

But time and again she found herself typecast in the same old roles. With a new baby and abandoned by the dad, she went back to college to do a creative writing degree and that's when she found her true voice.

She founded A Scott Productions to explore social impact, exploring topics and themes such as domestic violence, gun crime, absent fathers, anti-bullying, child abuse; reflecting stories on the screen of people's experiences who are normally underrepresented, & opening the lid on issues often hidden away.

She has many messages and stories to share with the world, and in any way that she can make a difference in the world, she will use the power of her words to do so. She believes in being your authentic self, doing what you love, and following your dreams no matter what hurdles you face.

Thanks so much Aysha, for sharing the challenges you have faced, and how you have turned them round to create work that reflects social issues that need bringing into the light so that others can see that there is always hope.

Also for showing us that even when your path is strewn with obstacles, with vision and determination, it is possible to change your circumstances and create a better way.

Blue sky and sunflowers against missiles and war-mongering, with artist Alena Kuznetsova

Blue sky and sunflowers against missiles and war-mongering, with artist Alena Kuznetsova

This week’s guest is Alena Kuznetsova, one of Ukraine’s leading contemporary artists, who had to flee Kyiv when Russia invaded her country, leaving behind all her paintings and sculptures. We spoke when she managed to get to Lviv, where she was able to stay with a friend to regroup and decided what she was going to do next. We spoke via her phone.

Having escaped to Lviv, Alena was able to talk about how in the first few days of the Russian invasion she thought she might be able to stay in Kyiv. But soon with incoming missiles detonating near her studio, it became clear she and her family couldn't stay.

Born in Russia with a Russian father, she had come to Ukraine at the age of 5 years old and obtained her passport at 16. When Russia invaded, it was as a Ukrainian that she united with her people is standing up against their oppressor.

As an artist Alena had developed a distinctive abstract style and a distinguished reputation, but now in the midst of war it is her citizenship that matters more; politics and saving her country over the loss of her studio and her paintings.

But she needs to  survive, and fortunately she has the digital versions of her work which she can sell through Saatchi Art who represent her. This is a way that the rest of us can help her and other artists like her; by buying fine art prints through the online website, drop-shipped straight to us, no matter where Alena finds herself in the coming months.

She is determined to stay in Ukraine, if she can, to help make Ukraine's art and culture not only survive this war but rise up even stronger from the ashes.

Thanks so much Alena for sharing your personal story, and perspective of what is happening within your country on the ground. I pray that the world unites in giving Ukraine and its people the support they need to secure their freedom and the future of their sovereignty.

Thanks also for showing us how to be resilient in the face of a force that doesn’t have our best interests in its heart.

You can buy fine art prints of Alena’s work on www.saatchiart.com/alenakuznetsova and follow her on Instagram @Kuznetsova_artist

Books change lives, with publisher and Sourcebooks founder Dominique Raccah

Books change lives, with publisher and Sourcebooks founder Dominique Raccah

This week’s guest is Dominique Raccah, the entrepreneurial Publisher and CEO of Sourcebooks, which has won every award for innovation in the publishing industry, has created scores of New York Times bestsellers & hundreds of national bestsellers; and is the largest woman-owned book publisher in the United States of America.

Publishing a book has always relied heavily on author book tours to promote their books but the Pandemic saw all those tours cancelled in the last couple of years. Retailers and the supply chain suffered but publishers and authors learned to adapt and innovate.

Dominique wasn't always a book worm but when she did finally discover the worlds that lay beyond the covers she was hooked. She didn't take the normal route into publishing but instead fell into it through the course of taking another path.

Once in, she was gripped, took a progressive approach and led the way into a market-driven route to book publishing success.  As her coach said she was the most fearful client he had ever seen, who never allowed that fear to get in the way.

Thanks Dominique for being a leading light in the wonderful community of books that help change lives and enlighten souls; for recognizing that every book is personal and every author’s voice has its place, and for knowing when to hold up a book and gift it to the world.

Connecting People through Cake, with vegan baker & founder of Cake or Death Katie Cross

Connecting People through Cake, with vegan baker & founder of Cake or Death Katie Cross

This week's guest is Katie Cross, Founder of Cake or Death London. After a near miss at the Great British Bake-Off, Katie decided to start a vegan bakery that quickly began to supply cake & cookies wholesale to cafes, art venues and businesses across London. When Covid hit, the business took a nosedive, but a little side hustle took centre-stage.

Brave New You TRIBE podcast Host, artist & illustrator, Lou Hamilton chats with Katie as they discuss how, dressed in pink leopard boxes Katie's tray bake brownies began to snowball. Everyone wanted to send them to loved ones & feel connected through cake. Arguably the best vegan brownies you've ever tasted, they are delivered across the UK, directly through your letterbox, with a heartwarming message. Scaling fast under such testing circumstances is no mean feat, and in this way this Woman of Courage brings us her Story from the Edge.
