Debut author Jonathan N. Pruitt is a lifelong educator turned fantasy writer. His redemption arc took him from being a musical child prodigy in a low-income rural county in Florida, to getting his PhD at the age of 24, to an international scandal in 2020 that set its sights on his research methods in behavioral ecology.

But he soldiered on, and has been teaching and traveling the world and, as of late, writing. With his impressive and varied background, and his experience and expertise as a scientist, he brings a unique and insightful eye to his fictional world.

Author Brooklyn Quintana discusses her debut young adult novel, Fynneas Fog: Nine of Swords. This dark fantasy adventure is the first installment in a nine-part series. It follows young Prince Fynneas, who is sent to the Morancy Academy of Military Arts on a magical and dangerous island where his survival cannot be guaranteed. Being homesick is the least of Fynneas’s worries, given that he must deal with eccentric instructors, enchanted jungles, man-eating mermaids, labyrinths and talking spiders.

This week on the podcast, we're sitting down with Catherine Spader to chat about her career trajectory from ER nurse to journalist to fantasy writer. Catherine explains how her medical background brings realism to her writing, and talks about the tips and tricks she learned as a journalist that shape her fiction writing.
