#49 - Simon Blackwell: Writing Veep & The Thick of It, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Scary Phrase, Emergency Plane Writing, The Genius of Armando Iannucci, Sweary Grannies, & Why Parenting Makes You A Better Creative

I am lucky to introduce today’s guest who has been at the forefront of British comedy for the last two decades.

The man behind hit shows such as Back starring Mitchell and Webb and Sky’s Breeders, his career is long and celebrated but it is his partnership with Armando Innaucci for which he is probably best known.

Together they have brought movies like In The Loop and The Personal History of David Copperfield into the world as well as the now legendary sitcom The Thick of It and its ridiculously acclaimed US cousin Veep which won seventeen Emmy awards during its run. Along the way, he picked up two of them for himself, as well as four BAFTA nominations and an Oscar nomination for In The Loop.

My guest is Mr Simon Blackwell.

Conflict and peace building in Northern Ireland

Conflict and peace building in Northern Ireland

This year Northern Ireland turned 100. And much like Australia day, many celebrate — but many have regrets too. There's a fragile peace in Northern Ireland, after 40 years of violence in the troubles, and challenges remain today: from Brexit to the dream of a united Ireland. On God Forbid, James Carleton and the panel explore questions of identity, conflict, religion, and peace in Northern Ireland — but with universal lessons.

    Books We've DNF'd & Why? | Sarah J. Maas, Jane Austen & More

    Books We've DNF'd & Why? | Sarah J. Maas, Jane Austen & More

We're back with another episode of The Book Jar Podcast and we're discussing our most spectacular DNFs. We start this week's podcast with a review of our most recent reads: Marissa's got a long list and Megan has a modest one.

From there, we dive into DNF lists. Marissa takes a brief moment to discuss why she is a "carry-on" type reader with books she doesn't love and Megan defends the lost art of putting down a book to never, ever pick it up again.

Megan and Marissa then dive into an account of all the books they've ever not finished. Megan cites some terrible romance scenes in a popular series, Marissa discusses how backpacking through Scotland inadvertently led to her never finishing Cloud Atlas, and both discuss some novels that they WISH they had never picked up in the first place.

The readers finish it off by discussing their reading goals for the next two weeks and pull the next topic from the Book Jar.

Want your question featured on our podcast? DM us your question on Insta and we'll add it to the book jar.

Talfryn Thomas, Harry Andrews, Imogen Hassall, Brian Glover and more: we tell some stories of character actors in film, theatre and advertisements. Their names you might not know, their faces may be much more familiar.

And one factual error.. five OAP bonus points if you spot it!
