David Price ’61 retires from Congress after more than three decades of service to North Carolina’s fourth district

Former congressman David Price ’61 joined Catalyze with scholar co-hosts Benny Klein ’24 and Elias Guedira ’26 in December 2022 during the politician’s final month in office. Price, who retired this January, represented North Carolina’s fourth district, including Orange County, Chapel Hill.

The alumnus visited the Foundation to share about his lifetime career of public service and his over three decades serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. Price also spoke about his involvement as a scholar in the civil rights movement at UNC–Chapel Hill, some of his proudest political accomplishments, and his post-retirement plans.

Price released the fourth edition of his book, The Congressional Experience, in 2020. He revised the book to cover the Obama and Trump administrations.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree at Carolina, he pursued graduate studies at Yale University to earn a theology degree (1964) and a PhD in political science (1969). Price is a professor of political science at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy.

How to Improve Your Boring Meetings with David Price

How to Improve Your Boring Meetings with David Price

Meetings!!! Do you feel that we have too many meetings? Are they productive? Do they have a purpose? Are they the right length? Are we having them at the right time of day? Are we meeting to have meetings?

So many of us get bogged down with meetings and miss out on productivity. David gives us some very valuable insight and guidelines.

Are your meetings held on Monday mornings? Is this a good time to have a meeting? Could we try Tuesday and see if the participation is better?

Do meetings drag on because because the tradition is to have the meeting last for an hour or two hours? David gives the example of moving the meeting towards the end of the day so quitting time is the natural end of the meeting.

What about Powerpoint? Are our slides filled with text? If they are, we may be lacking confidence that we don't want to miss anything. If this is the case, we can trust ourselves a bit more by removing the text and using a few pictures as talking points.

If you can see the tops of heads in the audience, that is an indicator that the audience has lost interest.

David reminds us that no one dies while giving a speech. Once you give it, you can ask yourself was it worth being that worried?

David has quite a few stories and is well worth listening to and one can learn alot from this podcast.

    JD TALKIN SPORTS #623

    JD TALKIN SPORTS #623

Tanaka taking a line drive from Stanton's bat.  Tanaka said he will be back soon.
Cam Newton and Jameis Winston 2020 salaries combined making less then Chase Daniels.  Daniels on his best day isn't at the level of those two QB's.  Richard Sherman agree that Newton shouldn't have had to sign with Pats for NFL minimum.
So a man kneeling turned people off to watching the NFL and now the Black National Anthem will lose more NFL fans.  I say be gone.  Is it because African Americans are the majority of the players in the NFL?  Food for thought.
