When Crime Becomes Punishment By DCFS By Putting Children In Harms Way; With Jerry Nicholas

Slam the Gavel welcomes Jerry Nicholas to the podcast. From Chicago, IL Jerry has become an advocate for other parents who have had their children wrongfully removed.
His two sets of twins were at school that morning in 1993, ages 5 and 6 thinking they would be protected at school. However, his children never got off the bus. Jerry and his wife called the police to report them missing. The police came to their home, forcing their way in to remove his other four children. He tried to report them missing.
Law enforcement seized his children without a search warrant on 7-27-1993. For a whole year, he didn't know where his children were. There was no paperwork until they made it into the Chicago Defender newspaper May 21st, 1994.  Apparently, an ANONYMOUS REPORTER called in a FALSE REPORT. There were NO allegations against Jerry in court. The DCFS reports did not match up. They never allowed Jerry to see his children AT ALL. In June of 1994, Jerry found out that DCFS changed the last names of his children from Nicholas to "Nicholus." Now he really couldn't find his children.
The Cook County Department of Guardians Office  filed a lawsuit against DCFS on THE SAME DAY his children were removed : DCFS Shelter 810 West Montrose, "they take these children and put them there and they become victims of human sex trafficking, physical assault and psychiatric medicating," Jerry explained. There were bullet proof windows where no one walking by could hear the children scream. They were there for two days along with others. How could the Governor of Illinois think this was okay??
A class action lawsuit was filed and a judge prohibited DCFS to take the children to the shelter, but it continued anyway. They didn't tell the public that the Nicholas children AKA "Nickolus" children were there.
In 7-29-1993 DCFS took the children and others to Grant Hospital, that had some type of contract with them, again these children were taken there because they had been abused. There were bullet proof windows where no one walking by could hear the children scream. They made these children dysfunctional and sick via medicating them.
Any child declared special needs, developmentally delayed and ADHD;  they drug them up to make them LOOK like that, Jerry explained.  It is unconstitutional to put them there without a court order. There was NO COURT ORDER to put his children there. Jerry didn't get a court order until SEPTEMBER 2013, by Juvenile Delinquency Division from former Judge Susan Fleming who presided over all cases from 1993 (it wasn't DCFS court in 1993)  to 2013.
"Every child going in there was arrested by the Chicago Police Department, and that is aggravated kidnapping, a conspiracy," Jerry stated. "Under the RICO ACT it is FRAUD UPON THE COURT. They were frauding the state out of money by fraudulent means."
Jerry recommends that a constitutional, civil-rights, litigation attorney to handle all these cases on a  file a class action basis to SUE DCF and Cook County Public Guardian Office for misrepresentation for children WRONGFULLY REMOVED from their parents.
Jerry recommends watching the film, “Foster Boy,” supported by Shaquille O’Neil.

Megan Elizabeth Ward: Reunification Is The Priority, However There Comes A Time When Permanency Needs To Outweigh Reunification

Megan Elizabeth Ward: Reunification Is The Priority, However There Comes A Time When Permanency Needs To Outweigh Reunification

Jayne Amelia talks with Megan Elizabeth Ward.  Megan and her wife,  Amanda McMillan, started fostering in the Fall of 2017 as a kinship family via ICPC. Following a successful reunification, Amanda and Megan transitioned to a DFCS partnership home and haven’t looked back since. Fast forward almost 5 years and 40+ placements, Amanda and Megan have provided a loving home to kiddos of all ages, backgrounds, and needs – sometimes for just a few hours and sometimes for many years. They have been most dedicated to a sibling set of toddlers and a sibling set of teenagers that have been with them long-term and who will always fill their hearts – even when they no longer fill their home. Amanda and Megan believe in the importance of reunification and partnership parenting and build incredibly strong bonds with the biological families.

The Region 5 Foster Care Community is incredibly important to Amanda and Megan and so they have recently joined forces with other local families to launch The Five Hive – a partnership initiative with DFCS. The Five Hive aims to establish a peer support network for foster families and a swarm of support for the entire Region 5 Foster Care community. Long-term, Amanda and Megan hope to not only impact the lives of the children in their care but also find ways to strengthen the Foster Care community throughout the state of Georgia.

"Originally from Jupiter, Florida, Megan fled the gator state to be a double-dawg, earning both her Bachelors and Masters in Public Relations from Grady College at the University of Georgia. A New Media Institute alumna herself, Megan has worked with the NMI since 2011 and has served in a variety of capacities. Currently, Megan serves as the Administrative Director of the NMI, overseeing all daily operations for the largest undergraduate certificate at UGA. She also teaches undergraduate and graduate courses for both the NMI and the Emerging Media Master’s concentration. As TEDxUGA licensee, Megan has served as mama to all things TED on the UGA campus since 2013. Megan leads all organization and curation efforts for the annual TEDxUGA event in March."

S2 E10 Jaci-Former Foster Care Youth Shares Her Unforgettable Story /Jayne, Podcast Host & CASA, Shares Her Experiences

Today’s episode speaks on behalf of those children who search for their forever home, who have been removed from their familiar environment for one reason or another and placed into a different permanent or temporary family environment. The hope is always that the new home is a better fit for raising that child. However, situations exist where the child is put in more danger.  I never thought about the foster care system until now. After this episode, I wont forget!

I would like to welcome Jaci Cortez. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She was in foster care from ages of 4-21. Her mom was an immigrant from Guatemala. She was arrested for being in, as they say, the wrong place at the wrong time. Jaci was born here, and not allowed to leave with my mom.  She  was 4 years old when they arrested her mom and decided to deport her. Her grandma didn't have papers either and was afraid she would get deported so Jaci's only option was to be placed into foster care. Shortly after, an aunt decided to pick her up and it changed Jaci's  life forever... and not exactly in a good way!

At one point, Jaci was broken from the abuse she endured for years. You will hear how her strong faith in God, resilience, and bravery lead her to the place she is today. In her words, "if they've ever been hurt or abused or anything negative, never give up. Nothing lasts forever."

My second guest, Jayne Amelia Larson, is a volunteer for CASA of Los Angeles, CA. She has a podcast, Bonus Babies, where you can find several episodes like the one you will hear today.  It wasn't until Jayne became a CASA that she understood foster kids are superheroes. They are amazingly adaptable, resourceful, resilient, and the fact that some of them make it through a terrible system, is simply because they are amazing. They are superheroes. What inspired you to become a CASA? What are the duties and responsibilities? How has it changed your life? Jayne answers these questions and many more!

Venus Manuel and Lori Nelson: They Saved Each Other

Jayne Amelia Larson talks with former foster youth Venus Manuel and her case worker Lori Nelson, a former social worker working in the LA County foster care system. Venus spent her adolescence and teen years bouncing from foster home to home, and credits one great social worker, Lori Nelson, with saving her life.  And Lori says they saved each other. Venus is now an Independent Living Coordinator with the Los Angeles County Probation Department working with foster youth and says, “I will continue to champion this cause by being a voice for those too afraid to speak and for those who are not being heard.”  And Lori continues to be a champion for kids of all ages.

Venus Manuel: That Started Our Odyssey Through The Foster Care System Of 9 Different Homes In 3 Years

Venus Manuel: That Started Our Odyssey Through The Foster Care System Of 9 Different Homes In 3 Years

Jayne Amelia interviews former foster youth, Venus Manuel, a shining example of how nurture does not always triumph over nature.

From an early childhood rampant with sexual and physical abuse followed by a string of nine foster care homes, the development of another disillusioned dysfunctional youth seemed tragically imminent.  However, the strength, passion and individuality inherent in Venus provided her with the abilities to not only rise above her beginnings, but stand as a true pillar of society.  After graduating from Palmdale High School in 1996, Venus was emancipated from foster care and rapidly found herself in a state of destitution. Quickly responding to her circumstances, she forged an opportunity with the US Air Force and served an eight-year commitment to her country as a combat photographer. Those eight years were incredibly fruitful. Venus Manuel accomplished what most people would not be able to do with twice the time. The main bulk of her energy was directed towards bettering the lives of transitional foster care youth.  As a motivational speaker requested by organizations such as the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, Child Welfare League of America and America Works, Venus has raised over half a million dollars specifically for disenfranchised youth, and continues to fight for the welfare of foster care youth.  At the same time, and carrying with her the platform “The Successful Transition of Foster Youth” at age 21, she began competing in and winning high profile beauty pageants.  Her titles include Miss High Desert 2000, Miss Central California 2001, Miss Los Angeles County 2002, Miss Black California 2003, and Miss Black United States 2004. Venus has also won the Miss America Interview and Community Service Award, and was chosen as one of Glamour magazine’s “Top Ten College Women in America.” Venus has an Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts from Antelope Valley College and a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services from California State University Dominguez Hills where she graduated in the top 10% of her class and was nominated by her peers as Outstanding Graduate.  She has a Master’s degree in Public Administration and a Master’s degree in Counseling Education. She was also invited by the late director Penny Marshall and producer Kenadie Cobbin to be the opening act of their immensely popular Vagina Monologues at the Wilshire Ebell Theater.  Venus is married with two children.  After the birth of her son she took up pole dancing as a hobby that turned into a 12-year passion of movement exploration, performing, teaching (women, men, and LGBTQ) and competing all over the world in Vertical Theater.  She is also an Independent Living Coordinator with the Los Angeles County Probation Department continuing her work with foster youth and says, “I will continue to champion this cause by being a voice for those too afraid to speak and for those who are not being heard.”
