    025: The Dead Poets Society

Join the discussion on this episode of the WatchWell Podcast where Parker, Nik, and their guest Taryn Boyett use "Dead Poets Society" to converse about the importance of the ability to think free, the importance of the Christ centered parent, the challenges kids face in our society today, and more.

Who’s it for: People who watch movies and take their Christian faith seriously.

The WatchWell Podcast presented by Parker Brown Cinematography is a Christian movie review podcast that discusses false or incoherent worldviews in comparison to the Christian worldview. We watch a movie, discuss the plots and character arcs that Hollywood pieces together to tell us how life is or isn’t and then we go to the Bible to interpret its authenticity.

Acts 17:22 Paul went to the men of Athens. The WatchWell Podcast aims at Hollywood and their art to demonstrate the unknown God. That even in their art they cant help but depict what they already know to be true in their hearts. That God is real, the Bible is true, and Christ is King.

Is this, like, the tiredest we’ve ever been in our lives? Who’s running our corrections department? And is this a poetry or a sex ed class? We study these questions and more as we watch Season 7, Episode 4 of Family Matters.

Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.

Dead Poets Society with Tom Schulman

Dead Poets Society with Tom Schulman

Today’s guest is none other than Tom Schulman, the Oscar-winning writer of timeless school drama Dead Poets Society. Released in 1989, Tom’s affecting and uplifting story of seven classmates who take a stand against the uniformity of the elite boarding school they attend is a valentine to never letting the world smoulder that flame in you that makes life worth living. Best remembered for an astonishing turn by Robin Williams as the kids’ teacher, John Keating, the movie walked away with Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards and Best Film at the BAFTAs, and remains an ingrained part of our pop culture three decades later: the boys’ emotive calls of “oh captain, my captain” and Keating’s advice to “carpe diem – seize the day” deeply embedded in our collective consciousness today.

Writing the film involved deep soul-searching from Tom, whose life story overlaps with the characters in his screenplay. He went to an elite boarding school and was inspired by an iconoclastic teacher. Speaking from his home in Los Angeles, he told us about an abandoned sub-plot in which Keating has cancer in his first draft, about the improvisational magic that Robin Williams brought to the role, and what he thinks the movie’s legacy is today. No need to stand on your desk at home to listen along – a sofa will do just fine.

260 - Robin Williams: A Wonderful Mind's Rise and Fall

260 - Robin Williams: A Wonderful Mind's Rise and Fall

Robin Williams knew how to make people feel deeply. He could give you a belly laugh - or a cathartic cry. He knew how to entertain you in a way that only he could. He seemingly had so much energy it's like he vibrated around instead of walking like the rest of us. His mind seemed to move so FAST. And then his brilliant mind betrayed him. Or, rather, his mind just wasn't able to defend him from the cruel and degenerative disease of Lewy Body Dementia. With the diagnosis not coming until two years after his death, he had no idea why he was suddenly becoming more and more forgetful, confused, paranoid, and delusional. While he publicly continued making movies and tv shows, he privately suffered. And then on August 11, 2014, at the age of 63, he took his own life. Or, rather, Lew Body Dementia took it. A sad ending. But before that - what a life! From rich kid, to broke student, to struggling comic, to rocketing to fame and fortune with first Mork and Mindy, and then successful standup specials, and then classic films like Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Goodwill Hunting - Williams entertained hundreds of millions of people. And today we examine and celebrate his life - and even critique it a bit - while also learning about the disease that took him from us.

Dave Itzkoff: "Robin" - A Biography of Robin Willams

Dave Itzkoff: "Robin" - A Biography of Robin Willams

This is the twentieth episode of "Talking with Authors" by HEC Media and HEC Books. We're a program dedicated to speaking with some of the best selling authors around, covering many different genres.

Today, our author is a culture reporter for the New York Times and four time book author Dave Itzkoff. We spoke with him as he was on tour in November of 2019 with his then brand new book “Robin” a biography of Robin Williams by publisher Pan Macmillan.

Dave Itzkoff is a journalist that has covered the worlds of film, theatre, TV, and pop culture…and he would need to use his knowledge of all of those worlds to take on the subject of the comedian and actor Robin Williams when he decided to write his biography.  The multi-talented artist that died back in 2014 had previously given some interviews with Itzkoff back in 2008 and 2009. Those talks coupled with more than another 100 interviews with family and friends, helped Dave learn about the ways that Williams connected to his fame and his fans. He also learned about the darker world of depression and addiction that Willams occupied. We’ll take a deep dive into the career of the iconic comedian and actor Robin Williams and learn about his journey through Hollywood and later life. Culture writer Dave Itzkoff on this edition Talking With Authors from HEC Media and HEC Books.

Our host and interviewer this time is Angie Weidinger.

HEC Media is a production company out of St. Louis, Missouri.  With the help of independent bookstore Left Bank Books and St. Louis County Library, we are able to sit down with these amazing writers and thought leaders to discuss their work, their inspiration, and what makes them special. You can watch video versions of most of our interviews at hecmedia.org.
