Ep. 34: Dean Koontz - The Bad Weather Friend

Page One, produced and hosted by author Holly Lynn Payne, celebrates the craft that goes into writing the first sentence, first paragraph and first page of your favorite books. The first page is often the most rewritten page of any book because it has to work so hard to do so much—hook the reader. We interview master storytellers on the struggles and stories behind the first page of their books.

    About the guest author:

Dean Koontz is a bestselling author and America's master of suspense with 79 New York Times bestsellers. He is also one of twelve writers in the world ever to have fourteen of these books rise to number one on the hardcover bestseller list, and sixteen of his books have risen to the number one position in paperback. His books have also been major bestsellers in Japan and Sweden. And he has been hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as “America’s most popular suspense novelist.” Dean is also a huge dog lover and is originally from Pennsylvania. He currently lives in Southern California with his wife, Gerda, and their golden retriever, Elsa, and the enduring spirit of their goldens, Trixie and Anna. They are long time supporters of Canine Companions for Independence. You can find his website at www.deankoontz.com.

    Dean's early years

After graduating from Shippensburg State College (now Shippensburg University), Koontz's first job after graduation was with the Appalachian Poverty Program, where he was expected to counsel and tutor underprivileged children on a one-to-one basis. His first day on the job, he discovered that the previous occupier of his position had been beaten up by the very kids he had been trying to help and had landed in the hospital for several weeks. The following year was filled with challenge but also tension, and Koontz was more highly motivated than ever to build a career as a writer.

He wrote nights and weekends, which he continued to do after leaving the poverty program and going to work as an English teacher in a suburban school district outside Harrisburg. After a year and a half in that position, his wife, Gerda, made him an offer he couldn’t refuse: “I’ll support you for five years,” she said, “and if you can’t make it as a writer in that time, you’ll never make it.” By the end of those five years, Gerda had quit her job to run the business end of her husband’s writing career.

    Submissions to Page One:

If you have a first page of fiction that you’d like to submit to the Page One Podcast, please do so here.

After the first few episodes, it occurred to me that maybe someone listening might be curious how their first page sits with an audience, so I’m opening up Page One to any writer who wants to submit the first page of a novel they’re currently writing.

If your page is chosen, you’ll be invited onto the show to read it and get live feedback from one of Page One’s master storytellers. Page One exists to educate, inspire, and celebrate the work of both well-known and unknown creative talent.

    Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz

    Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz

Shakin Shaner and Jeremy discuss how they discovered this New York Times Bestseller from Dean Koontz.  WARNING--Listen at your own peril, as the Bodachs have sabotaged Jeremy's audio to prevent him from advising this realm of their existence. We tried to salvage his comments even after the Bodachs' otherworldly attacks.

Odd Thomas sees dead people. However, that is not the strangest or most interesting thing about him. Dead people seek Thomas out. They do not speak, but they communicate with Odd telepathically, frequently leading Odd to their killers. Shakin Shaner discuss this refreshing character and explore the world of Pico Mundo and they cast of characters to include the Fungus Man and Odd's destiny, Stormy.

Episode 107 COVID-19: Basic History, Myths, and Conspiracy Theories

Episode 107 COVID-19: Basic History, Myths, and Conspiracy Theories

Rudy, Toby, Tyler, and Kenny (AKA Cade) quickly discuss the current history of the CoronaVirus as of 3/21/20. We go over the basics of what we know currently and the CDC's list of myths that people are apparently spreading.

If you want to skip all that and go straight into the conspiracies since we're all living this life right now.. Skip to around the 19:52 time mark.

Did China's Ministry spokesman, Zhao Lijian, accuse the United States of starting the CoronaVirus?

Does CoronaVirus have any similarities to the video game Resident Evil?

Did Dean Koontz "The Eyes of Darkness" book predict the future?

Is there a cult located in all the areas where the outbreaks first started?

Did the Simpsons do it once again and predict this event?

Is this nature fighting back against us?

Beyond The Cover with special guest Tosca Lee

Beyond The Cover with special guest Tosca Lee
We are pleased to talk to Tosca about her latest release "A Single Light, book two in the Line Between Series": In this gripping sequel to The Line Between, which New York Times bestselling author Alex Kava calls “everything you want in a thriller,” cult escapee Wynter Roth and ex-soldier Chase Miller emerge from their bunker to find a country ravaged by disease, and Wynter is the only one who can save it. Six months after vanishing into an underground silo with sixty others, Wynter and Chase emerge to find the area abandoned. There is no sign of Noah and the rest of the group that was supposed to greet them when they emerged—the same people Wynter was counting on to help her locate the IV antibiotics her gravely ill friend, Julie, needs in order to live. As the clock ticks down on Julie’s life, Wynter and Chase embark on a desperate search for medicine and answers. But what they find is not a nation on the cusp of recovery thanks to the promising new vaccine Wynter herself had a hand in creating, but one decimated by disease. What happened while they were underground? With food and water in limited supply and their own survival in question, Chase and Wynter must venture further and further from the silo. Aided by an enigmatic mute named Otto, they come face-to-face with a society radically changed by global pandemic, where communities scrabble to survive under rogue leaders and cities are war zones. As hope fades by the hour and Wynter learns the terrible truth of the last six months, she is called upon once again to help save the nation she no longer recognizes—a place so dark she’s no longer sure it can even survive. Fast-paced and taut, A Single Light is a breathless thriller of nonstop suspense about the risks of living in a world outside the safe confines of our closely-held beliefs and the relationships and lives that inspire us.
