60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday: What If You Could Create Powerfully Collaborative Communication?
Hello, to you listening in Laconia, New Hampshire!
Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.
Maybe this has happened to you. You’re explaining your idea or sharing your thoughts when someone says, “Yes, but” How did you feel? Discounted, defensive, invisible as if they had a better idea or one of greater value.
"Yes, but" communicates judgment. “Yes, but" is heard as negating what’s been said. Even if our intention is not judgmental, the speaker hears “Yes, but” as a critical response.
See what a difference it makes when we change one word to “Yes, and.” The entire communication dynamic shifts to being seen, heard, included, and valued. "Yes, and" is heard as conveying a willingness to expand upon the speaker’s idea even though we might not necessarily agree with the speaker.
Practical Tip: When we consciously practice eliminating “Yes, but” in favor of the more inclusive “Yes, and” we create powerfully collaborative communication.
You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!
