S12 E12: Delaware State of the Arts - James Morgan

Andy Truscott speaks with James Morgan, a 2023 Delaware Division of the Arts Individual Artist Fellow in the field of Media Arts (Video/Film).  Videographer James Morgan has been at work in a studio for over two decades, making recordings and following his profession as both a cinematographer and YouTube Channel designer. But the project for which he’s been named a Division Emerging Artist Fellow is his series of engaging short videos that speak directly to young children. His goal for this body of work is “to create something that children will enjoy watching.”

S12 E15: Delaware State of the Arts - Lauren E. Peters

S12 E15: Delaware State of the Arts - Lauren E. Peters

Andy Truscott speaks with Lauren E. Peters, a 2023 Established Individual Artist Fellow and well known painter in Delaware. Lauren E. Peters believes that “all clothing is a costume. We are costuming ourselves daily in the roles we play for those around us.” This belief is the basic tenet of her artistic practice. Fighting the urge to hide, Peters attires herself in a variety of clothing to “add and subtract layers of meaning.” She then creates source photos on which to base her paintings, works that question, probe, and interpret the roles of women in society. Peters grew up in Wilmington, one of three children, and she spent a lot of time “playing dress-up. [She] would put on plays in a neighbor’s basement theater.” She has also worked as a theatrical costumer, something that was “a good step (in hindsight) to what I’m doing now.” Her favorite painting as a child was Jamie Wyeth’s Portrait of a Pig, and she was drawn to the Impressionists as a teen. But “finding [the contemporary works of] Cindy Sherman and Jenny Saville was huge.”  Peters also has always liked the art of Andy Warhol, with its “vulnerability juxtaposed against such glamorous, larger-than-life artworks.”

For those who have dined locally at Wilma’s on Wilmington’s Market Street, will see one of Peters’ pieces above the bar.

S12 E13: Delaware State of the Arts - The Queen

S12 E13: Delaware State of the Arts - The Queen

Andy Truscott speaks with Brianna Hansen, the Marketing Manager of The Queen in Wilmington, Delaware. Originally built in the 1800s, “The Indian Queen Hotel” was a popular place for traveling sailors to spend the night. From 1916-1959, the hotel was repurposed into a movie theater and brought joy to thousands of locals. Sadly, it was abandoned and sat dormant for over 50 years. With water pouring through the ceilings, the walls caving in, and the façade crumbling, this majestic theater had become a faded memory of Market Street’s vibrant past. However, as all good leaders do, The Queen found her way back to the throne and reopened her doors to the people on April 1st, 2011. Today, a full scale live music venue, she stands as one of the most historic buildings and theaters in Wilmington, Delaware. Learn more about The Queen’s new programming – including The Vinyl Countdown with Grace Vonderkuhn, Region, and Treewaler, by visiting their website at TheQueenWilmington.com.

S12 E11: Delaware State of the Arts - Bryant "Tee" Bell

Andy Truscott speaks with Bryant “Tee” Bell, a 2023 DDOA Emerging Individual Artist Fellow in the field of painting.

Bell is a native of the First State who grew up in Greenwood, Delaware with his two brothers, and he was in the first graduating class of Woodbridge High School. The artist attended school in Hampton, Virginia, but received Bachelor and MBA degrees from Delaware State University, where he also took studio art classes. He worked for eight years at DSU after a long, successful career in insurance and brokerage, work that enabled him to travel throughout the US and internationally and contributed to the depth of personal perspective in his unique portraits.

As a painter, Bell consistently works to master new mediums, seeking to learn techniques and paint on a larger scale. He exhibits regularly throughout Delaware – frequently at the Mispillion Art League (Milford), at the Biggs Museum of American Art (Dover), and at Camp Rehoboth. He also works to relate music, photography, sculpture, and other mediums to his practice, and he finds that meeting new artists and viewers is especially fruitful and rewarding.

A Delaware native, Stevenson grew up in Milford, the oldest daughter in a family of four children. Though she graduated from college with degrees in psychology and biology, “I’ve always been a writer.” Kim is a nationally recognized award-winning writer and journalist who specializes in feature writing, especially taking complex subjects and presenting them in an approachable manner. S12 E10: Delaware State of the Arts - IVA

S12 E10: Delaware State of the Arts - IVA

Andy Truscott speaks with IVA. Known professionally as IVA, Emily Samson Tepe is no stranger to working hard, digging deep and crossing boundaries. She was trained as a classical soprano at Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music, but she has truly found her voice in writing and singing her own songs.

Born Emily Samson Tepe, IVA trained at Princeton University, the Juilliard School, and the Manhattan School of Music before moving to Stockholm, Sweden, on a Fulbright scholarship to study the music of her ancestors. She was poised for a career as a classical singer, winning rave reviews for her concerts abroad, until a chance meeting changed her direction: at the gym she got to chatting with the casting director of Late Night with Conan O’Brien, who invited her to sing on the show. Max Weinberg took notice and IVA returned many times as a singer and actress. She realized her voice suited more modern settings for music.

IVA has spent the past years writing songs with Nashville-based artists Kim Richey, Adam Ollendorff, Kyle Ryan, Jeremy Lister, and Charlie Berry. She has been performing these songs at the piano and on her newly learned guitar for her live performances. This past year she recorded her next album, “Nobody’s Woman” with producers Ross Bellenoit and Jaron Olevsky as well as with her band and will release the record to radio in the Fall of 2022 thanks to the streaming success of the “Run”. She is also currently composing an opera, called “Inside Out”, addressing her experience with domestic abuse.

IVA has a thriving private studio, allowing singers, musicians, and performers to learn from multiple vocal techniques to find their authentic voice (ivavoicestudio.com). IVA is based in Brooklyn and Delaware, where she leads her Philadelphia band.  To learn more visit www.ivavoice.com.

    S12 E9: Delaware State of the Arts - AllHipHop.com

Terrance Vann speaks with Greg Watkins, a Delaware State Arts Council member and the co-founder of AllHipHop.com.

As the Founder of the Urban website and music destination, AllHipHop.com, Grouchy Greg Watkins is fulfilling his childhood dream as an entertainment business pioneer and entrepreneur. With his partner, Chuck “Jigsaw” Creekmur, Watkins has built AllHipHop.com into the Internet voice of Hip-Hop culture. Born in Albany, N.Y. and raised in Newark, Delaware, Watkins was intrigued by Hip-Hop starting at the age of six. He briefly flirted with a recording career as a member of his rap group, The Outfit, and in 1993 launched his label, Oblique Recordings.

While pursuing a career as a music label owner, Watkins attended the Art Institute of Philadelphia, studying audio engineering and marketing and graduating with an Associate’s degree in Music Business. AllHipHop.com officially launched in 1997, and this year Watkins and Creekmur are commemorating their 19th anniversary. AllHipHop.com has won several awards, including the Rising Star Award from Black Enterprise, as well as a coveted BET Award in 2009 and it was the first one the network awarded. The website was recently (2015) nominated for another BET Award and has been nominated every year since the category was created. Watkins has reported on various topics relating to Hip-Hop culture, has been featured on numerous radio shows and has been cited in print, and TV shows ranging from Billboard to The New York Times, as well as CNN, MTV, BET, FOX, Fuse, E!, TVone and others. Almost 19 years after forming AllHipHop.com, Watkins’ holding company Syncing Sun has launched CollegeHipHop.com.

S12 E4: Delaware State of the Arts - Delaware Theatre Company

S12 E4: Delaware State of the Arts - Delaware Theatre Company

Andy Truscott speaks with Bud Martin, the departing Artistic Director of Delaware Theatre Company, as he prepares to retire after leading the organization for 10 years.

While serving at DTC, Martin tripled the revenue and doubled the subscriptions. He oversaw 10 seasons, directing productions such as, Outside Mullingar, HONK!, Saint Joan, Sanctions, Dare to Be Black, Hetty Feather, White Guy on the Bus, The War of the Roses, The Explorers Club, Putting It Together (with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra), Love Letters, Rest, in Pieces, The Story of My Life, Lend Me a Tenor, and many more.

Before Martin departs, he’ll be directing DTC’s One Man, Two Guvnors, running February 1-19.  Set in 1963 England and delightfully underscored by a live band, ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS is a Tony award-winning comedy that transforms Italian classic Servant of Two Masters into a fast-paced, side-splitting, door-slamming farce. Down on his luck and permanently hungry, Francis finds himself employed by two separate bosses at a party that goes horribly (and hilariously) awry.

S12 E3: Delaware State of the Arts - Coastal Concerts

Andy Truscott speaks with Carol Dennis (Executive Director) and Richard Scalenghe (Board President) of Coastal Concerts.

In 1999 a few classical music enthusiasts decided it was time to bring world-renowned classical performers to their new hometown of Lewes, Delaware instead of traveling back to Philadelphia, Washington DC, or New York.  They were not alone in longing to hear live concerts by internationally acclaimed artists in an intimate setting close to home.

For 24 years this volunteer-led organization has thrived! Each season they present six live performances at Bethel United Methodist Church in Lewes, Delaware and draw audience members from the entire Mid-Atlantic region. In addition, CoCo encourages classical music appreciation through community outreach, educational activities and awarding scholarships to deserving young musicians.

S11 E36: Delaware State of the Arts - Delaware Arts Alliance

Andy Truscott speaks with Neil Kirschling, the new Executive Director of the Delaware Arts Alliance.

Neil joins DAA from Rodel, a nonprofit that partners with Delawareans to transform public education in the First State. His responsibilities included strategic planning, policy development, coalition management, program management, and local and national stakeholder engagement. Neil previously served as a legislative fellow in the General Assembly, conducted research for the Institute for Public Administration, and participated in the Delaware Department of Education’s “Future Education Policy Leaders” program. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Public Policy and Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Delaware.

A patron and participant in the arts, Neil volunteers and performs with various local theaters, and supports arts and cultural organizations throughout the state. Neil received a gubernatorial appointment to the Delaware Hispanic Commission, where he leads education and advocacy efforts in support of Hispanic youth and English learner students. He also serves as an advisor for the Delaware Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy board.

Following the national fiscal crisis of 2008, artists, art professionals and civic leaders across Delaware grew concerned about the future of the arts sector. They formed a 16-member coalition with the goal to raise awareness of the importance of the arts for economic and community development. It was clear that Delaware needed a strong, unified voice speaking on behalf of arts and culture, and none existed at the time. The coalition brought together an initial group of 33 Delaware arts organizations to form the Delaware Arts Alliance in 2009. Since then, the alliance has nearly doubled in size and is a strong force in advocating for the arts at the state and national levels.

S11 E37: Delaware State of the Arts - Greater Harrington Historical Society

Andy Truscott speaks with Doug Poore, the curator of the Greater Harrington Historical Society. In cooperation with Delaware Humanities and the Smithsonian Institutes Museums on Main Street program, the Historical Society will be hosting the traveling exhibit “CROSSROADS: CHANGE IN RURAL AMERICA”. The exhibition is part of Museum on Main Street, a unique collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and Delaware Humanities. The exhibit is open through January 28, 2023.

Crossroads: Change in Rural America offers small towns a chance to look at their own paths to highlight the changes that affected their fortunes over the past century. The exhibition will prompt discussions about what happened when America’s rural population became a minority of the country’s population and the ripple effects that occurred.

Founded in May 1977, the Greater Harrington Historical Society is one of the oldest in Delaware. From our humble beginnings in an office, we have grown to now include 3 museum locations and we house over 50,000 artifacts, some dating back to the early 1700’s.
