    TikTok made me deduct it

    TikTok made me deduct it
TikTok, and other apps like it, are filled with financial advice. Some of it is reliable, some... less so.

There are videos about running a business, having a side hustle, generating passive income. And also, there are a lot of tips and tricks, many of them questionable, about saving on your taxes.

On this show, we run some of the greatest hits of TikTok tax advice by some bonafide tax experts. We'll talk about whether you can use gambling losses to reduce your tax bill, whether your pets qualify you for tax deductions – and we'll fact check the claim that all rich people own expensive Mercedes G-Wagons... for tax purposes.

Along the way, we'll drill down on the concepts like taxable income and the standard deduction. And we'll ask why so many videos on TikTok suggest that you (fraudulently) categorize personal expenses as business expenses. Sometimes with a literal wink and a nod.

This episode was hosted by Nick Fountain. It was produced by Emma Peaslee with help from Willa Rubin, who also fact-checked this episode. It was edited by Molly Messick and engineered by Cena Loffredo. Alex Goldmark is Planet Money's Executive Producer.

To Lease, Buy, or Have No Car at All? How 2022’s Used Car Market Shifts Things

To Lease, Buy, or Have No Car at All? How 2022’s Used Car Market Shifts Things
I sold my car in March 2021 and have (mostly) never looked back as part of a one-car couple, but my husband and I have been dabbling with the idea of getting a new car this year. Unfortunately, 2022 is…not a great time to buy a vehicle, as anyone who’s perused the used car market knows.  It inspired this episode in which we break down the lease vs. buy decision in today’s car market with guest Jorge Diaz, author of Car Leasing Done Right (https://www.leasecosts.ca/en/book).  As part of the episode, I wanted to do an IRL lease vs. buy comparison with a luxury car—so I reached out to a Porsche dealership to pull numbers on a 2023 Macan. What I wasn’t expecting as part of my number-crunching journey: being immediately plunged into an inferior sense of class consciousness as a result of the interaction. That’s…a fun bonus in the episode. 😂 Mentioned in the Episode - Car market prices up 24% in 2021 (via The Washington Post): https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2021/10/28/used-car-prices-chip-shortage/ - Rule of thumb for paying for a car: https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/loans/auto-loans/much-spend-car - “Why Leasing a Car is Like Setting Money on Fire”: https://moneywithkatie.com/blog/why-leasing-a-car-is-like-setting-money-on-fire - Study: Driving fewer than 10K/year: https://www.rockethq.com/learn/personal-finances/how-expensive-is-uber - Pregnancy Discrimination Act: https://www.eeoc.gov/pregnancy-discrimination  — Follow Along - Listen to Money with Katie here: https://www.podpage.com/money-with-katie-show/ - Read Money with Katie: https://moneywithkatie.com/ Follow Money with Katie! - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/moneywithkatie/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/moneywithkatie - TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@moneywithkatie   Subscribe to Morning Brew - Sign up for free today: https://bit.ly/morningbrewyt Follow The Brew! - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/morningbrew/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/MorningBrew - TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@morningbrew Learn more about your ad choices. Are tax returns too taxing - and could you not know you need to do one?

Are tax returns too taxing - and could you not know you need to do one?
Are tax returns too taxing, why did new overdraft rules backfire, are challenger banks biting and what are the cars that hold their value best? We answer these questions on this week’s This is Money podcast.

It’s tax return time. The organised will have safely filed their tax returns long ago, but there are still plenty of people who don’t yet feel the last minute has arrived.

But what if you are meant to fill in a tax return and don’t realise?

On this week’s podcast, Simon Lambert, Lee Boyce and Georgie Frost discuss the ten reasons that people may have to fill a tax return in, even though they are employees paid through PAYE.

The team also discuss whether much of the tax return is really needed, or whether people are needlessly spending time filling in an over complicated form for an overly complex system.

Also on this week’s podcast is the overdraft row that’s blown up on the back of the FCA’s attempt to improve borrowing and bank’s deciding that 39.9 per cent rates sounded about right.

The team discuss whether the challenger banks are starting to bite and why people are attracted to them.

The ten cars that should hold their value best are also revealed, from a Dacia to a Bentley.

But remember that even the best of these will lose you 35 per cent.

And finally, Simon tells us about the new episode of the Making the Money Work podcast with London 2012 Olympic-medal winning boxer Anthony Ogogo.

244: “Unfair” Taxes and Unfair Advantages with Linda Weygant, CPA

You’ll also hear how she discovered the power of real estate through her clients, and how that led her to begin her own investing journey. Linda shares how she navigates the messy world of investing in properties that have HOAs, as well as how she uses her “unfair advantages” to succeed where others fail. Finally, as a CPA, we have a special “tax-focused-Fire-Round” where we talk about LLCs, deductions, and much more!
