Next, CDC releases the 2024 immunization schedules for children and adolescents, as well as adults. Finally, staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccines helps prevent COVID-19-related strokes, blood clots, and heart attacks in adults aged 65 years and older and adults on dialysis.

H-Guard: Improving Physical and Mental Health

H-Guard: Improving Physical and Mental Health

For the 850 million people around the world suffering from chronic kidney disease, the grind of dialysis treatment can wear them down in more ways than one.

Dr. Andy Herbert, co-founder of Invizius, is out to change that. This five-year-old company started from humble beginnings and is currently developing H-Guard® Priming Solution, which increases the effectiveness of dialysis while negating, or eliminating, its potentially dangerous side effects. It will be used in an upcoming first-in-human clinical trial and has the potential to improve patients’ quality of life – both physically and mentally.

Join Dr. Herbert as we discuss the origins of Invizius, how H-Guard works, why dialysis can take a toll on mental health, and how working with a strategic partner has helped Invizius progress this treatment.

I Donated My Kidney to a Stranger: A Fascinating Interview with Chaya Lasson, RN

I Donated My Kidney to a Stranger: A Fascinating Interview with Chaya Lasson, RN

It is challenging enough to imagine lending a stranger your car or giving them a large sum of money. Yet, some kind souls donate their precious, living body parts to people that they don't know.

Chaya Lasson, RN is just such a person.

This week she shares her personal journey with living kidney donation. Her story will fascinate and inspire you.

Chaya is happy to chat with anyone interested in learning more about living kidney donation. You can reach her at: classon@lifebridegehealth.org.

She discusses the organization that helped her on the journey to donation. It is called Renewal and can be reached at www.renewal.org.

You don't need to donate a kidney, but I suggest that you consider how you can put good into the world this week.

Thanks for joining me on the journey!

Dialyzing for Dollars with Tom Mueller

Dialyzing for Dollars with Tom Mueller

Dialysis is a medical miracle — vastly extending the lives of people with kidney disease. When it was first discovered, Congress rushed to assure that it was covered by Medicare. And then big business got involved. Abdul reflects on the way that American capitalism disembodies healthcare. Then he speaks with Tom Mueller, author of “How to Make a Killing,” about the excesses of dialysis corporations in America.

A Nation's Test: The US Experiment with Universal Healthcare for Kidney Failure, with David Krissman

A Nation's Test: The US Experiment with Universal Healthcare for Kidney Failure, with David Krissman

In this episode of Causes or Cures,  Dr. Eeks chats with filmmaker and documentarian David Krissman about his investigative podcast series, "The Great Social Experiment," about America's only experiment with universal healthcare, the treatment of patients with kidney failure.
David takes us back to 1972, when congress guaranteed healthcare coverage for people with kidney failure regardless of race, socioeconomic status and age. And while on the surface, this sounds like a great and altruistic endeavor..., David describes why it is a cautionary tale of inequity, faulty decisions  on life-or-death matters, putting profits first, questionable incentives and at the core, a cautionary tale about what drives human behavior.  Throughout the podcast, David references media reports, government data, interviews with prominent experts and kidney patients. So fasten your seatbelts, because this is an incredible story by an amazing storyteller. (And after you listen to this, absolutely check out David's podcast here.)
