I Donated My Kidney to a Stranger: A Fascinating Interview with Chaya Lasson, RN

I Donated My Kidney to a Stranger: A Fascinating Interview with Chaya Lasson, RN

It is challenging enough to imagine lending a stranger your car or giving them a large sum of money. Yet, some kind souls donate their precious, living body parts to people that they don't know.

Chaya Lasson, RN is just such a person.

This week she shares her personal journey with living kidney donation. Her story will fascinate and inspire you.

Chaya is happy to chat with anyone interested in learning more about living kidney donation. You can reach her at: classon@lifebridegehealth.org.

She discusses the organization that helped her on the journey to donation. It is called Renewal and can be reached at www.renewal.org.

You don't need to donate a kidney, but I suggest that you consider how you can put good into the world this week.

Thanks for joining me on the journey!

IgA nephropathy (Berger's disease) | How to live well with it?

IgA nephropathy is a kidney disease in which IgA, a protein meant to defend the body against foreign invaders, accumulates in the kidneys and damages them. This impairs their filtering function. As a result, the kidneys begin to let substances such as blood and protein leak into the urine. It is also named Berger’s disease as it was first described by Berger and Hinglais in 1968.

Building Memories, One Field at a Time with Robert Kessler

An inspiring story of love, perseverance and the power of football - Bob Kessler is in awe of where his family was and where they are now. His son Tyler is a walking medical miracle. Tyler suffered from kidney failure when he was just four years old and received a transplant from his grandmother. But, in 2000 he was diagnosed with cancer and his body rejecting the kidney. Suffering from Post Transplant Lymphatic Disorder, he was the only child in the U.S who was undergoing chemo and dialysis at the same time.

But Bob didn't want Tyler's childhood memories to only be hospitals and doctors. That's why he set a goal to visit every NFL stadium in the country. Starting the year Tyler was diagnosed, they traveled the country meeting player after player and coach after coach. Their story is not only a football fan's dream, but a lesson to us all to never let our struggle define our story.

    QUOTES

Bob - Remaining positive: “I will tell you, my wife and I, we agreed at a very early part of this journey that there's no complaining, there is no asking why? Because there's no answer there. All we know is what we can do.”

Bob - Building community: “At first, you may be like, Hey, I don't need that. That's what we said, but give it a shot, and try to network and learn from others. You know, we learned a lot from families who have gone through, you know, you meet families in the hospital, who are going through similar challenges, some worse, and we've learned a lot by observing and talking to folks and sharing our story, and, what's the best way to work through all these challenges.”

#2: Ernie Reyes Jr. – The Art of Living Life to Its Fullest

#2: Ernie Reyes Jr. – The Art of Living Life to Its Fullest

“At the end of the day if you don’t have hope, you have nothing.” – Ernie Reyes Jr.

My guest this episode is Ernie Reyes Jr., a martial artist, actor, and fighter.  He is known for his work in films like The Last Dragon, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Surf Ninjas, and the Rundown starring alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.  I first remember being wowed by Ernie as he burst on to the television screen in the 80’s tv series Side Kicks.  At the age of 6 he joined his father’s famous West Coast Demo Team, he would also go on to a 3-0 professional Kick Boxing record in Strike Force.  He is a father, a stuntman, and action film maker.

This episode is filled with inspiration, wisdom, and the artistic expression of martial arts in film and in life.  My key takeaway is that we must value the gift of life and live it to its fullest.  We dive deep into Ernie’s battle with Kidney failure and how it transformed his life.  Martial Arts gives us the ability to face challenges on and off the matts.  Ernie describes how he used his martial arts training to stay mentally focused, make himself comfortable in uncomfortable situations, and operate from a hope driven mindset as he went through the process of kidney failure, to dialysis, to receiving a kidney transplant, and to making a healthy recovery.

We also discuss his friendship and training relationship with the Diaz brothers, what makes great fight scenes, and what it takes to be a good teacher and a great martial artist.

Ernie has been a true inspiration to many, first sparking the martial arts interest for generations of kids and adults, and now showcasing the power of the arts, and how to keep hope in the face of darkness.  Tune in this is a great episode with a Martial Arts Cultural Icon.

What is a Chef with David Pollack of Cooking Without Kidneys

What is a Chef with David Pollack of Cooking Without Kidneys

This week, we have a mini-episode about what it means to be a chef. This is something I'm asking many of the guests as part of my upcoming season 3 interviews. I thought it would be great to get as much insight on this as possible, from many different people in the food and beverage industry.

Today's answer comes from David Pollack. He's a chef in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania region. After experiencing kidney failure in 2003, and undergoing dialysis, David finally received a kidney transplant. Like all people with kidney issues, he had to change the way he cooked and ate. Taking what he learned about his new diet, and combining it with his knowledge of cooking, he’s created Cooking Without Kidneys. David is in the early stages of creating this non-profit organization. Currently, he’s sharing recipes on his website, and has a video series as well.

You can find my full conversation with him here or wherever you get your podcasts.

Meet Carol Loya, Allianze Case Management: Lupus Warrior to Business Owner

Meet Carol Loya, Allianze Case Management: Lupus Warrior to Business Owner

My guest today and I have a very special link:  Carol Contreras Loya is my baby sister.  But we have another very special and rare link:  We share a pair of kidneys!  Carol was diagnosed with lupus, a chronic illness when she was only 15.  At a time when I was worried about pep rallies and college applications, she was fighting for her life with multiple hospital stays and surgeries.  At the age of 21, her disease attacked her kidneys. Her doctors tested all of us, and we found we were a perfect match.

After her transplant of my kidney in 1993, Carol was inspired to study nursing, and despite her health struggles, worked hard to earn a degree from UTEP, the University of Texas at El Paso, becoming the 2nd in our family to cross a university stage.  However, her illness made traditional nursing next to impossible for Carol, and she began to search for other avenues where she could use her nursing degree without the long hours and risks to her own health.  A cousin of ours reached out to her about an opportunity in the home health realm where she could set her own schedule and not be on her feet as much. Carol found that the individualized patient contact and ability to follow and celebrate progress brought her the fulfillment she was searching for.  She took the next steps to earn her Case Management certification, and built a career with a large Case Management company working with Workers’ Compensation cases.

However, the entrepreneurial nature inspired in us by our mom continued to pull at her, and with the support of her husband, who was working in marketing while pursuing his own degree, she launched her own company, Allianze Case Management.  Starting with just a few contacts, she pounded the pavement, built relationships with doctors and networks, and was able to land lucrative contracts with the Department of Labor.  She recently celebrated her company’s third anniversary.

Join us to hear about how her illness manifested into a passion for providing compassionate, dedicated health care and what drives her to continue to be a leader in her industry. Vamonos– juntas somos pasionarias! .

    Crossing the Rainbow Bridge

    Crossing the Rainbow Bridge

As a dedicated pet parent, it's never easy to process the passing of a beloved pup. On this week's episode Bryn and Laura share the story of their oldest dog August as they make the incredibly hard decision to have her cross the rainbow bridge. From a young pup, this sassy husky of a girl suffered from intense hip dysplasia and mild incontinence. But after finding useful medications like CBD and Carprofen, August's discomfort was eased significantly giving her the start of a healthy and balanced life. Bryn and Laura blended their packs shortly after dating but once August experienced the trauma of loosing her older brother Nanook to a neighbor dog, she started relating having the new dogs in the house to the sudden loss. In turn, she became aggressive towards the youngest of the bunch and so Bryn and Laura started separating their packs into 2 separate groups. Though it was incredibly difficult, this created a balance in the house giving August the final 3 peaceful years she deserved. It wasn't until August's health suddenly declined that the vet was able to diagnose her with intense kidney failure as well as cancer in her stomach and chest. That was the painful push that caused Bryn and Laura to make the incredibly hard decision to see August crossing the rainbow bridge. Please join us as we grieve the loss of such a sweet baby while reminiscing on such a beautiful life.
