The SleepyTime Braacast: A Tale Of Two Cities

The SleepyTime Braacast: A Tale Of Two Cities

A Tale of Two Cities is an 1859 historical novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel tells the story of the French Doctor Manette, his 18-year-long imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris, and his release to live in London with his daughter Lucie whom he had never met. The story is set against the conditions that led up to the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. In the Introduction to the Encyclopedia of Adventure Fiction, critic Don D'Ammassa argues that it is an adventure novel because the protagonists are in constant danger of being imprisoned or killed.[2]

As Dickens's best-known work of historical fiction, A Tale of Two Cities is said to be one of the best-selling novels of all time.[3][4][5] In 2003, the novel was ranked 63rd on the BBC's The Big Read poll.[6] The novel has been adapted for film, television, radio, and the stage, and has continued to influence popular culture.

    David Copperfield (1935)

    David Copperfield (1935)

We're back, Old Soul family! And we are covering an audience recommendation of a classic novel adaptation: David Copperfield! One of Charles Dickens's own favorite characters, the story of young David is a coming-of-age tale with lovable (and hate-able) characters that influence his life in becoming an aspiring author. This movie came to be out of producer David O. Selznick's love and devotion to his own father...and much to the opposition of his father-in-law (who was head of the studio)! We loved giving our first impressions on a story that has been on many people's bookshelves for over a century!

    The Two Houses

    The Two Houses

In 1859 Charles Dickens wrote "A Tale of Two Cities" about the French Revolution of the late 1700's. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. If you lived anywhere near London or Paris, you knew what that meant. The world was filled with turmoil, different classes, and unpredictability. Dickens notes that it is always like that in every culture, and often within most people. Most people fight the power of both darkness and light, hope and despair, on an ongoing basis.

Did you know it should not be that way with Christians? God did something that changed everything. One day disciples are in a house crying and hopeless. Shortly after they are in a house standing up in confidence and joy. What made the difference? And how can that difference live in your life? The resurrection of Jesus won't due as a part of the Christian's life. It must become the centerpiece of your life. Jesus defeat of death changed everything forever. It should change you.

You can live in a world of duality and uncertainly, but do so with confidence and joy. This can bring immeasurable peace to your life but also may draw other people to Jesus Christ!

    - Has a generation ever existed that was stable, predictable, just and fair?

    - So why are we often so surprised when we see that ours is no different?

    - More importantly, what does it say about us if that same duality exists in us?

    - What has God done to change things forever and add eternal peace to your life?

    - How does the resurrection infuse your present life with purpose and direction?

    The SleepyTime Braacast: David Copperfield

    The SleepyTime Braacast: David Copperfield

    David Copperfield by Charles Dickens

David Copperfield is the story of a young man's adventures on his journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr Murdstone; his brilliant, but ultimately unworthy school-friend James Steerforth; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble, yet treacherous Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora Spenlow; and the magnificently impecunious Wilkins Micawber, one of literature's great comic creations. In David Copperfield - the novel he described as his 'favourite child' - Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of the most exuberant and enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy and comedy in equal measure. This edition uses the text of the first volume publication of 1850, and includes updated suggestions for further reading, original illustrations by 'Phiz', a revised chronology and expanded notes. In his new introduction, Jeremy Tambling discusses the novel's autobiographical elements, and its central themes of memory and identity.

    The Ira David Wood interview

    The Ira David Wood interview

A holiday visit to North Carolina this week as I visit with Founder and Executive Director of Theatre In The Park Ira David Wood III. The beloved character actor, who for 48 years has played the part of 'Scrooge' for the theatre's musical production of 'A Christmas Carol' in Raleigh, talks about how his East Carolina roots combined with his love of reading Shakespeare and Dickens started his stage career. The actor and playwright who created his own unique musical/comedy production of a holiday classic, discusses the importance of honesty in acting, building audience trust and the fun of character development. He also talks about two of his children who followed him in their own careers: Emmy nominated actress Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) and son Ira (Artistic Director for Theatre in the Park) and how they still reach out to dad for his creative advice. Bring along your love of the stage (and a mug of wassail!) and join us.

    Giving Thanks

    Giving Thanks

Who do we give thanks for? It's NOT people who are out for themselves, who build wealth in money, power and influence. We give thanks for people think of others, who build wealth in the goodwill of others. If you think too much about yourself, now's the time to change. We talk about giving thanks from a spiritual sense but also in a worldly sense, in keeping with the title of the podcast. You're also given an assignment at the end - to spend your Thanksgiving building relationships with others - instead of just lying around after big meal (and did you thank the cook(s)?
