The Future Of Online Education - Insights from Australian university leaders

The Future Of Online Education - Insights from Australian university leaders

In this special one-off episode of the Deep Blue, SPP Principal Clara Yates is joined by Partner Bruce Bayley to chat about the future of online education.

Over the past several months SPP has spoken to a cross section of higher education senior leaders to gather their perspectives on the current online education landscape, and their predictions for the future.

Bruce and Clara walk through the key themes that emerged from these discussions, and what it means for universities going forward.

    Key Take-Aways:

    • It’s time to move beyond the “face to face vs online” dichotomy
    • When looking to online education as a growth engine, universities should focus on market driven opportunities
    • Rich data and personalisation are critical benefits of online learnings models that are still largely untapped
    • Universities need to be honest with themselves about their capability and capacity to deliver quality online and blended education
    • Online offers increased market reach and can help solve a lot of accessibility challenges, but it’s not a panacea
    • Cultural barriers to online education among university staff remains a challenge
    • Universities shouldn’t underestimate the level of investment required to adapt and thrive in this rapidly evolving environment

Putting on Your First LIVE Paid Course

Putting on Your First LIVE Paid Course

Live courses have their unique set of challenges.  PAID live courses raise the stakes even higher.  The pressures of delivering a high level of value in a paid course are multiplied ten-fold.

So here are some things to consider before jumping into your first paid offering.

Don’t rush it.  Beyond the content of the course itself, there are so many moving pieces even with the simplest of events.

To manage this, I got my feet wet with a free class first.  This allowed me to tackle a few moving pieces without sacrificing the quality of the course content.

A few times over, adding more and more of the back end logistics, and before you know it, I was ready to put on my first paid course.

The other thing I want to remind you of is your content itself.  It takes priority over everything else.  Bells and whistles, aesthetics and production value can suffer but content cannot.

No matter how complicated or simple your event logistics are, you must always strive to over deliver. Teach you a$$ off

I will report back once my event is done and share reflections things I’ve learned.  Until then if you would like to join us, you can still register at the link below.

Learning is Much More Than Consuming Information

Learning is Much More Than Consuming Information

Here’s the crux of self-education, especially in the internet age: consuming information does not equate to education.

If you’re like me, you grew up in an education system that rewarded regurgitation of information.  So it’s no wonder that we approach self-education, especially with the access the internet gives us to said information, the same way.

Heck, there’s even a saying that “knowledge is POWER”!

    No it’s not.

Just knowing things doesn’t amount to learning. Just consuming information doesn’t grow your proficiency and capability.  You can to develop your critical thinking facilities and also apply the things you’re learning

Otherwise, you’re just cutting yourself short.

I Just Taught My First Masterclass - Here’s What Happened

I Just Taught My First Masterclass - Here’s What Happened

Going into the launch of my first masterclass, I was a bag of mixed emotions.  Excitement and fear, enthusiasm and doubt.

Now that the class is done, I’m no less a bag of mixed emotions — except this time, all positive.

Did it go perfectly?  Far from it.  And besides, there’s no such thing right?  It went the way it was meant to and I couldn’t be any happier about that.

From a numbers standpoint, the registration was more than I had ever hoped for, especially given that I did no paid traffic.  All 60 registrants were generated through organic traffic and content (mostly Facebook lives) I was publishing.

This was fantastic validation of a process I only theorized.

The thing I’m most excited about is that now I have this class under my belt, all other classes and everything else I’ll be rolling out this year are that much more possible!

The completion of this masterclass opens me up to a whole new world of possibilities, a world I cannot wait to to explore.

Leading the Sustainable Learning Projects with Trevor Soponis

Today, Maria talks with Trevor Soponis, Founder and Chief Learning Officer at The Sustainable Learning Programs, an organization dedicated to transforming education for students, educators and the planet. His doctorate from New York University examined the impacts of innovative environmental education programs while proposing a unique system to better support the design and implementation of sustainable ecological learning in K-12 education.

This episode is for students, teachers, parents, and educators interested in transforming our schools to become places where students learn by working on projects that contribute to solving the biggest issues facing our planet.

Trevor shares how he partners with teachers, schools, and districts to design innovative project-based learning experiences that allow students to make a meaningful impact on people, communities and society. We dive into two Sustainable Projects - Project Ocean Harvest and Project Student Voice -  and together, we unpack how through collaboration, connection and contribution, students learn, build skills, solve real-life problems, and create impactful work.

We also talk about how project-based learning experiences enable teachers to become the coaches, facilitators and supporters that we want them to be so they can create the next generation of lifelong learners. We reflect on how parents, during their distance learning experience, are realizing how little we are expecting from their children at school and what boredom really looks like.

Co-Creating a More Equitable Future of Digital Education with Michael Gallagher

Co-Creating a More Equitable Future of Digital Education with Michael Gallagher

For educators who feel that everything they love about teaching has been thrown away, this conversation offers insights to help navigate the current turmoil in higher education by learning how universities can co-design a more equitable future of digital education to continue to serve teachers, students, staff and the local community.

Our guest today is Michael Gallagher, lecturer in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh, co-programme director of the MSc in Digital Education and a member of the Centre of Research in Digital Education. Previously, Michael was an Assistant Professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, Korea.

Today he works on digital education projects in sub-Saharan Africa (Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda) and often collaborates with INGOs, including the World Bank’s Open Learning Campus and UN-Habitat. He currently works on Foundations for All, a Mastercard Foundation project exploring blended learning pathways for refugees into higher education in Uganda and Lebanon.

Michael was a researcher on the Near Future Teaching project, a project that explored how teaching at The University of Edinburgh unfolds over the coming decades, as technology, social trends, patterns of mobility, and new media continue to shift what it means to be at the university.

Michael has been awarded The University of Edinburgh Principal's Medal for 2020 for his outstanding contribution to support the university during 2020. In this episode, you will learn how Michael helped his colleagues and students move their courses online by leveraging his experience teaching the online MSc in Digital Education years before the pandemic.

Maria and Michael also unpack the role of mobile learning in creating a more inclusive education, especially for underserved and marginalized communities. They also share their thoughts and experience related to the pedagogy of simultaneity and serendipity in learning as they discover their shared passion for audio and natural sounds.

This is a rare conversation with a researcher and a teacher who wants to positively influence people’s view of what teaching can be, what teachers are and what role they serve in digital education.
