A Dream Deferred With Darryll Stinson

A Dream Deferred With Darryll Stinson

Best selling author of “Who Am I After Sports”, and TEDX speaker, Darryll Stinson’s NFL dreams came to a halt while in college.

Opioid addiction almost derailed his life dreams but he managed to pivot in his career path and now he’s a successful international speaker, best-selling author, credential minister, award-winning philanthropist, and 2xTEDx speaker .

Darryll, as a division 1 athlete, was on track to join the NFL but a back injury side tracked his dreams.  This led to a downward spiral and depression along with addiction to pain killers after his back injury.

Being hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital after becoming suicidal led to deeper insight and awareness around his mental health.  He journaled for the first time and learned about mindfulness, all of which helped him transform his life.

Do you have a system of success AND a system of self care?
Incorporating a self care system along with his faith and mental health care helped him create success in his life.

Darryll Addressed the following during the interview:

    ·       Can athletes with a strong athletic identity have plan B when they’re so driven to achieving their goals?

    ·       Is failure or defeat ever an option for elite athletes?  Is this why Tom Brady is unable to retire?

    ·       Is there life after a failed athletic career?

    ·       How to overcome repressed trauma.

    ·       The effective way to journal and raise awareness regarding deeper emotions.

    ·       The importance of finding the right therapist

    ·       How to use affirmations and declarations to improve your mindset

    ·       How improving your mental health can lead to inner and outer strength

    ·       The importance of consistency in improving mental and physical health

    ·       Why “Real men Don’t Cry” and how they can learn to stop suppressing emotions for healthier relationships and community

    ·       Anger as the only acceptable emotion and how to go beyond the mask of anger to address the sadness and hurt

    ·       How to use food to improve mood

    ·       Don’t wait until you’re in crisis to prioritize your mental health and invest in your self care.

    ·       Make sure you love people for who they are as individuals, and not just for their gifts or talents.

    ·       We underestimate the positive difference consistent effort makes in our lives.

Darryll also addresses the Dream Big and Dream Beyond philosophy/method, which  helps athletes plan for a transition outside of their athletic dream.

The Game of LIfe and Division I Sports with Jim Karas

The Game of LIfe and Division I Sports with Jim Karas

Key Points, Top Takeaways and Memorable Quotes -

“Again, on the weekends, when I was with them, I was kinda full on dad because I figured I have got to make up for the fact that I’m just not around here as often as I would have wanted to be.” 8:25

“Don’t make everything look perfect.  If you’re having a bad day, you can say to your kids, “Dad’s just not having a good day today.” 11:12

“It was really important that she always knew, and she really liked this, that neither her mother nor I were living vicariously through her and her sport.  This was her’s, her decision, if she wanted to stop, stop, if you want to continue, continue, we really tried and we really kept an eye on her mental health.”  22:58

“I come back to this whole point of asking questions.  We always talked to both kids like adults. We didn't do a lot of goo goo gah gah stuff and all that.  They also came everywhere with us.” 24:37

“I get this all the time, “Do you exercise all the time because of your body and how you look? I’m like, no, this is 95% for the neck up, 5% for the neck down, and I really strongly believe that.” 25:30

“I do think you just have to look at your kids and figure out what is something that may work for them.” 30:43

“Expose your kids to everything.  Let them decide what they want to do, but the more exposed they get, the more educated, the more knowledgeable, the more they know how to respond to situations just because you give them that opportunity.” 32:12

“I couldn’t believe it when I read this article that 94% of all women in Fortune 500 C Suites, 94%, were former athletes.” 37:26

“Our job too, as parents, is to provide bookends, to see where they are going and help navigate that stream.  And if it needs to open up a little bit, fine.  If you need to fine tune it a little bit fine, but you really need to have a pulse on where your child is going. 41:12

“For your parents, listening: who you choose as your friends has a significant impact on your children.” 47:35

“I say this to people all the time with an Entrepreneurial idea: figure out if it’s a human capital business or like, something you can produce, you know, a widget, a clothing store, do you know what I’m trying to say, a bookstore.” 49:31

“Hands down, don’t take yourself so seriously, Jim.  Knock it off.  Don't be so hard on yourself.” 51:01

“The poor want to be rich, the rich want to be happy.  The single wanna be married, and the married want to be dead.” -Jim quoted Dear Abby @ 52:43
