    The Re-Freshed Prince of Bel-Air

    The Re-Freshed Prince of Bel-Air

In March of 2019, Morgan Cooper dropped a video on YouTube that quickly went viral. It was a short film that he made as a passion project, after he was struck with a flash of inspiration: What if the 90’s classic The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air were updated for the 21st century?

Within 24 hours of posting his project online, Cooper got a call from Westbrook, the production company owned by Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith. Will Smith had seen the video, liked what he saw, and wanted to know what Cooper’s plans were. In short order, Smith flew Cooper to Miami, where he was filming Bad Boys III

The two met, and Will Smith signed on to Cooper’s vision, reimagining The Fresh Prince with a much more dramatic tone. They shopped the idea around and found a home at Peacock, NBC’s steaming service. Morgan Cooper was kept on as a writer, executive producer and director for the new series.

This week on Into America, host Trymaine Lee speaks with Morgan Cooper about Bel-Air, the creative decisions he’s making with the show, and his lightning quick rise in Hollywood. Trymaine also speaks with actress Cassandra Freeman, who plays Aunt Viv in the new show, as well as hip hop icon DJ Jazzy Jeff, who played Jazz on the original Fresh Prince, and who now hosts Bel-Air: The Official Podcast

Ep. 87: Alison Leiby & Seán Devlin

Drop a dope beat and lock it in your pocket, it’s a brand new episode of Go Fact Yourself!

Alison Leiby is a comedian who’s written for successful shows like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” But for all her success at making people laugh, she’s actually really interested in horror… but not enough to actually watch any scary movies herself. She’ll explain more about how this led to her podcast “Ruined.”

Alison faces off against her fellow comedian Seán Devlin. He really enjoys performing pranks -- both for laughs, like when he was part of the team that put together Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm, and to affect political change, like when he helped wall off a Canadian Prime Minister from his work to make a point about food shortages. Seán’s debut comedy album “Airports, Animals'' is available now.

Our guests will answer trivia questions about freshwater mammals, fresh beats and a fresh prince!

Ep33: Guilty Pleasure Music w/ Jamie Reynolds

Ep33: Guilty Pleasure Music w/ Jamie Reynolds

We all have those artists ... We all have those songs that we love but we're embarrassed to admit it. Although I would say I'm not embarrassed, I fully support these artists with all my heart - but maybe I should be embarrassed? Should I show shame for music I think is awesome?

The real question I suppose is, just because I think it's awesome, is it ACTUALLY awesome? Well, as I've said before - music is subjective! My version of awesome can be your version of guilty pleasure, and that's why these lists are great. Some of Jamie's picks are picks that I don't feel any guilt at all about liking, but Jamie is a metal guy and his perspective is different.

Check out this episode - it's really great. I say that every week, but this one I feel more than the others. There was very little editing of the conversation needed, we are just two buddies talking music and stuff we think is funny to like. Good times!

1990 - September: Depeche Mode “Violator”

1990 - September: Depeche Mode “Violator”

Depeche Mode made a decision to minimize their pre-production work when they created their seventh studio album.  It must have worked, becauce Violator would become their breakthrough international album.  Keyboardist Andy Fletcher, keyboardist and vocalist Martin Gore, also keyboardist and drum machinist Alan Wilder, and lead man Dave Gahan had previously hit the charts with their 1984 single “People Are People.” This album would see crossover success led by the monster hit “Personal Jesus.”  While the album was released in May of 1990, the last single from the album came out in September 1990.

Depeche Mode is best known as a keyboard-powered synth pop band, primarily successful in Europe up until this time.  The band name comes from a French fashion magazine, which had at one time considered making the band give up the name — but they decided to leave things alone.  The band was bringing more attention to the magazine, so it was a smart decision to let the band continue with the name.

The name of the album was a bit of a joke, poking fun at heavy metal albums of the time.  The group had decided to take a break from the extensive pre-planning that had marked the development of their previous albums.  Perhaps the increased spontaneity helped propel this album to a crossover success.

We hope you enjoy this album discussion and thoughts on 1990.

    World In My Eyes
This lead song was the fourth and final single from the album, and was released in September 1990. Martin Gore liked this song because of its upbeat tone, though “upbeat” might be a rather fluid description.  You get a sense of the keyboard-heavy foundation of the band with this song.

    Enjoy the Silence
This hit song was originally written by Martin Gore as a ballad, but the producer, Alan Wilder increased the tempo and made it a dance song.  The lyrics are dark, but Martin Gore considered the dark lyrics “more authentic.”

    Personal Jesus
This is the monster hit from the album, and boasts a rare guitar riff among the keyboards.  This top 40 hit has been covered by a number of artists, including Johnny Cash, Marilyn Manson, and Sammy Hagar.  The lyrics are about having someone as an idol in your life - dependent upon you in an unhealthy way.  David Gahan, after a wild youth, is now a sacramental convert to the Greek Orthodox Church.

    Clean
A deeper cut from the album, this track was heavily inspired by Pink Floyd's “One of these Days” from 1971.

    ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:

Theme from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince
Will Smith made rap accessible, while starting his career as a celebrity through his acting on this comedy show.

    STAFF PICKS:

Fly to the Angels  by Slaughter
The band name for Brian's staff pick sounds like a heavy metal name picked out of a hat, but it is actually the name of their frontman, Mark Slaughter.  The song is a ballad about a friend who has passed away. The song comes from the 1990 album "Stick It To Ya."  Fly to the Angels propelled Slaughter to stardom during a time when the Hair Bands were on their way out and Grunge was on its way in.

Mansion on the Hill  by Neil Young and Crazy Horse
Wayne brings us the guy that was grunge before grunge was cool.  This song and album was recorded with very little production, which gives it a live feel.  The Mansion on the Hill is about a place where “psychedelic music fills the air.”

    Thunderstruck   by AC/DC
Brian's staff pick is the lead single off AC/DC's 12th studio album (11th international release).  Angus Young is playing a single string with no picking, just hammer on and pull offs using the second string.  The song name came from a toy made by The Ideal Company called ThunderStreak, which was a wooden hydrofoil boat that was powered with a rubber band wind-up propeller.

Candy  by Iggy Pop and Kate Pierson
Rob's pick rounds things out with a crossover alternative rock hit.  Iggy Pop tells of a lost love from his perspective in one verse, then Kate Pierson (from the B-52's) picks up the next verse from the lost love's perspective.

    INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:

For the Love of God  by Steve Vai
Guitar virtuoso Steve Vai takes us out on this week's podcast with an eastern influenced instrumental riff.

A Nightmare On My Street- DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince Halloween Special

A Nightmare On My Street- DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince Halloween Special

The emotional scars of this song run deep. Katie saw approximately 10 minutes of one of the A Nightmare on Elm Street movies and, to this day, is haunted by the thoughts of a guy named Fred who "wears the same hat and sweater everyday." However, this song proved to be a living nightmare of ensuing legal battles, obligations to movie studios, loss of a music video. And the repercussions were felt right up through the last dying days of New Line Cinemas. Or not, who knows. Anyway, Katie is still terrified by this song, but does a "killer," Kreug impression.
