The Shining (1980 & 1997) and Doctor Sleep (2019) with Guest Doug Tidwell

Ever wonder what the show was like before Steve came aboard as co-host? Tune in to this vintage episode of Don't Encourage Us and listen to our amateur host stumble through the original Shining film, the ABC made-for-TV mini-series, and Doctor Sleep, the sequel made decades later...but is it a sequel to the novel, the movie, or the mini-series?? Guest co-host and friend of the show, Doug Tidwell, is here to help find the answer to that question and more -  right after this commercial for a very special episode of Ellen.

Check out trailers for The Shining (1980), The Shining TV mini-series (1997), and Doctor Sleep (2019)

    Doctor Sleep with Mike Flanagan

    Doctor Sleep with Mike Flanagan

This week on Script Apart, the return of Mike Flanagan! The response to our last episode speaking to the horror auteur, one of this generation’s true titans of the genre, was so emphatic, we couldn’t wait to invite Mike back on the show to get lost in the Overlook-esque hedge maze of 2019's Doctor Sleep, his near-miraculous sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep. We use the word “miraculous” because it really is astonishing what the Ewan McGregor-starring chiller managed to achieve, marrying the legacies of two notoriously different visions of The Shining.

Stephen King wrote The Shining in 1977. When Stanley Kubrick made drastic changes to King's source text in his adaptation of the story three years later, it led to contempt between these two masters of their craft. Fans have been divided ever since over which version is the more powerful – King’s novel, which had a different ending and a sunnier message about the capacity for love to triumph over evil, or Kubrick’s ruthless cinematic journey into male madness; the bloody end game of toxic masculinity, as embodied by Jack Nicholson’s Jack Torrence. When Mike was presented with the chance to adapt King’s 2013 literary sequel to The Shining, which continued the canon his story, ignoring Kubrick’s changes, the Haunting of Hill House filmmaker decided to attempt the impossible. His Doctor Sleep was to knit together the visual language of Kubrick’s Shining with the storytelling that King favoured,  honouring both iterations.

The story of how he pulled it off, and the seismic personal changes it sparked in Mike’s own life, is a tale as fascinating as the film itself. Which is saying something. Doctor Sleep is a fevered festival of telekinetic children, travelling vampiric bohemians and the courage it takes to beat addiction. And though the film didn’t perform well at the box office, it’s since found a passionate community of devoted fans who rightly consider it a masterpiece. Listen out at the end for some mind-blowing information on the sequels and spin-offs that its disappointing commercial performance sadly stopped from going ahead – and a note of optimism that we may see some of Doctor Sleep’s characters again, featuring in Mike’s upcoming adaptation of King’s incredible The Dark Tower.

    Ep. 029 - Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980)

    Ep. 029 - Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980)

“Well... you know Doc, when something happens it can leave a trace of itself behind. Say like... it's when someone burns toast. When some things happen, it can leave other traces behind. Not things anyone can notice, but things that only people with shine can see. Just like they can see things that haven't happened yet, sometimes they can see things that happened a long time ago. I think a lot of things happened in this particular hotel over the years... and not all of them was good.”

    PATREON MOVIE DISCUSSION:

This movie was selected by our Patreon Supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon. Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard!

If you've seen The Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor or Midnight Mass, you've seen director Mike Flanagan's work! However, for this episode we're traveling back to 2013 to discuss one of his earliest projects, Oculus

    Topics:

    • (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 40-minutes talking about the complicated dynamics of modern movie watching like watching on airplanes, cell phones, the gym, or doing dishes. Also, the concept of director, producer, editor, or alternative cuts to movies. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)
    • Daniel has watched more Mike Flanagan projects than Melvin. Melvin is curious if he's noticed a style or focus of Flanagan across each project.
    • Oculus is a fairly simple visual experience of reliving family trauma, but there isn't a whole lot else going on from start to finish.
    • The concept of cursed objects, things or tools having an effect on life in malicious ways not intended, is extremely cool. Despite this, the mirror as a cursed object has little presence.
    • Most every criticism Melvin and Daniel levy at the film feel sourced in young, undeveloped directing talent, which Mike Flanagan has likely improved since working on this 2013 film.
    • Melvin has extreme criticisms for both the original score and the cinematography for the film, finding both to be wholly uninspired.
    • Daniel, "[Oculus] moved between being kind of interesting and then being just kind of unpleasant because of the subject matter."
    • Discussing the "unreliable narrator" aspect of the film's second and third act, which people will either love or hate about Oculus.
    • The world of film, especially horror, uses poor mental health for its complicating incident, or to add flavor to its storyline. How do we feel about that?

17th Annual A-Z of Horror Festival, Part 1 (Alien Contamination, Bad Taste, Cat People, Doctor Sleep, Earth vs. The Flying Saucers, From Dusk Till Dawn, The Ghoul)

It's the return of the October ritual. Time for the 17th Annual A-Z of Horror Festival. There's no time to waste, on to the movies! This episode, it's A-G! Moaning egg things burst and get green goo all over unsuspecting investigators, which causes them to explode from within, causing a grisly trail of human hamburger gore. Join the coffee cult or die, in Alien Contamination (1980)! More aliens, this time invading New Zealand! Where they hack up and box up small town residents for a new intergalactic fast food sensation. Only "The Boys" can stop, or more likely contribute to, the absurdity of Bad Taste (1987)! Imagine getting married, only to discover that if your spouse becomes aroused, they may rip you to shreds. Better keep some catnip on hand! It the classic Val Lewton production, Cat People (1942). Still shinin' after all these years (thanks, Miles)! Adult Dan Torrance, still tormented by the Overlook Hotel, uses its powers against a new threat, in Doctor Sleep (2019). Does anything else need to be said, other than the title? No. Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (1956)! Who's ready for a RV ride to Mexico? With a pair of criminals! To a bar called the Titty Twister! That happens to be a vampire lair! Oh, yeah. Probably not a good idea. But the bar is open, From Dusk Till Dawn (1996). And then from there, Peter Cushing joins the fray! But his gardner, John Hurt, is a gleeful villain that you should probably keep an eye on. In fact, can anyone be trusted? Who is The Ghoul (1975)?
