Documentation, AI, and Project Success: Tinder on Customers

Documentation, AI, and Project Success: Tinder on Customers

Episode 36 | Guarding Against IT Amnesia

    The Big Themes:

    • IT amnesia: Bonnie introduces the concept of IT amnesia syndrome in tech projects, where post-success, lack of documentation leads to project failures. A culture of documentation is necessary to counter challenges.
    • Employee turnover: Documentation ensures knowledge continuity as team members move on post-project. Succession plans address turnover, facilitating transitions and preserving project insights. By ensuring a structured handover process, organizations can safeguard against knowledge loss and maintain continuity.
    • Role of GenAI: GenAI can help with documentation since many individuals face challenges in writing. Bonnie emphasizes that while AI doesn't replace the need for accuracy checks, it significantly speeds up the documentation process. Generative AI helps people make their notes on processes grammatically correct and easily digestible documents, making documentation more efficient.

The Big Quote: "Documentation and a culture of documentation: Making sure that everybody knows that it's not good enough to check a box. You have to check the box and have the documentation to ensure that process will happen in the future as well."

    Key Moments:

    • Documentation comes in different forms like code comments, README files, external documentation in Confluence, and architectural decision records (ADRs).
    • Code comments can become outdated over time as the code changes, so it's better to rely on clear naming, TypeScript types, and unit tests to document code.
    • README files should focus on project-specific setup instructions rather than general language/framework documentation, and link to external docs when possible.
    • External documentation is better suited for business context, team decisions, and diagrams that involve multiple teams. It's easier for others to contribute to compared to code docs.
    • Using a shared terminology ("domain language") is important for communication between teams working on the same codebase or product. This vocabulary should be documented.
    • ADRs are useful for documenting past architecture and design decisions in case they need to be revisited. They improve decision making and prevent rehashing the same discussions.
    • Writing documentation forces one to better understand a topic. Developers should practice writing to improve their communication and learning.
    • Tests can double as a form of documentation, like regular expressions explained through example test cases.
    • Commit messages should be concise and avoid too many changes in one commit to allow for informative messages.
    • TypeScript's "expect error" is better than "ignore" for documenting expected errors in code.

In some cases, we get so close to booking a job or are always getting cut before the last round. But how long do we go through this process before we move on to another focus? How do we tell the difference between when someone leading us on and when the timing just isn't right?

In this episode, Brandon talks about 5 signs to look out for when things aren't resulting in a job. He talk about the importance of taking each rejection as information and using that information to make your next move. 96. The 3 Reasons Your Parent Payroll is Hurting You

Early on in our careers we can get stuck in this mindset of never feeling like we have enough resources. For some dancers, they have the privilege and opportunity to start their careers with the financial security thanks to their parents, guardians, or someone else who helps fund their career early on. Although this is nice and softens the blow of diving into the real world, it could become a crutch that keeps dancers from fully committing themselves to the career they dream about.

In this episode, Brandon talks about why it's not always beneficial to have someone else fund your life at the start. The early days of your professional career is a great opportunity to gain confidence in yourself and what you can accomplish with limited resources. If you do have financial backing, Brandon shares ways you can ease off their payroll and fully step into your financial independence.

José Valim, Guillaume Duboc, and Giuseppe Castagna on the Future of Types in Elixir

José Valim, Guillaume Duboc, and Giuseppe Castagna on the Future of Types in Elixir
It’s the Season 10 finale of the Elixir Wizards podcast! José Valim, Guillaume Duboc, and Giuseppe Castagna join Wizards Owen Bickford and Dan Ivovich to dive into the prospect of types in the Elixir programming language! They break down their research on set-theoretical typing and highlight their goal of creating a type system that supports as many Elixir idioms as possible while balancing simplicity and pragmatism. José, Guillaume, and Giuseppe talk about what initially sparked this project, the challenges in bringing types to Elixir, and the benefits that the Elixir community can expect from this exciting work. Guillaume's formalization and Giuseppe's "cutting-edge research" balance José's pragmatism and "Guardian of Orthodoxy" role. Decades of theory meet the needs of a living language, with open challenges like multi-process typing ahead. They come together with a shared joy of problem-solving that will accelerate Elixir's continued growth. Key Topics Discussed in this Episode: Adding type safety to Elixir through set theoretical typing How the team chose a type system that supports as many Elixir idioms as possible Balancing simplicity and pragmatism in type system design Addressing challenges like typing maps, pattern matching, and guards The tradeoffs between Dialyzer and making types part of the core language Advantages of typing for catching bugs, documentation, and tooling The differences between typing in the Gleam programming language vs. Elixir The possibility of type inference in a set-theoretic type system The history and development of set-theoretic types over 20 years Gradual typing techniques for integrating typed and untyped code How José and Giuseppe initially connected through research papers Using types as a form of "mechanized documentation" The risks and tradeoffs of choosing syntax Cheers to another decade of Elixir! ‘And the truth shall set you free’: Historians discuss the Mountain Meadows Massacre and its aftermath

We believe it is our obligation to understand and learn from the past,” Elder Henry B. Eyring, then of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, remarked on Sept. 11, 2007, at an event commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Mountain Meadows Massacre. The massacre is perhaps the grimmest episode in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — when brewing tensions between early Church pioneers and immigrants traveling through the Utah Territory erupted, resulting in the death of some 100 people. In 2008, the book “Massacre at Mountain Meadows” explored the complicated history of the 1857 event. The sequel, “Vengeance Is Mine: The Mountain Meadows Massacre and Its Aftermath,” is now available. Authors Richard E. Turley Jr. and Barbara Jones Brown join this episode of the Church News podcast to talk about this period in Church history.

The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.

      STOP THINKING, JUST HIT RECORD

As Scott and Collin have discussed the various ways of documentation, the two dig deeper into the video recording method where they talk about what tools can be used and what to tell the prospect when they ask about the recording. Scott emphasizes the importance of using the tools around you and just hitting the record. Stay tuned as Scott also gives his last thoughts in this latest episode of Sales Transformation.

      TRANSFORMING MOMENTS

      SCOTT: JUST HIT RECORD

“Just click record. And now you've got documentation, you got transcriptions, you can take that recording and slice it into small pieces using a tool like grain. I mean, there are so many ways that you can put together the how-tos in your sales playbook, just with the basic tools that are available to you.”

SCOTT: YOU HAVE TO BE COMMITTED

“I don't care what the economic conditions are out there, if you're a startup founder, and you're just trying to get like a million, or two or three in revenue, or you're just trying to get your first 10 customers. Like, if you're looking around at exogenous variables as to why you can't sell your stuff, you probably got much bigger problems, it probably means that you're actually not committing to the sale.”
