"Dreams and Resilience: Unpacking 'Man' with Author Cornell Bunting"

"Dreams and Resilience: Unpacking 'Man' with Author Cornell Bunting"

In this episode, our host engages in a profound and thought-provoking discussion with Cornell Bunting, an accomplished author and poet, as they delve into his captivating work titled 'Man.' This narrative serves as a deep contemplation on the themes of dreams and resilience.

Cornell leads us through the intricate tapestry of 'Man,' where the story's central character awakens with a daunting dream that seems almost insurmountable. As he grapples with the weight of this dream, he finds himself questioning his own determination. Is man simply a dreamer, or does he possess the power to script his own destiny? The burden of responsibility looms large as he ponders the sacrifices required to chase his aspirations.

However, life takes an unexpected turn for 'Man' as he becomes ensnared in a web of fabricated accusations, potentially facing imprisonment. Confused and disheartened behind bars, he contemplates surrendering his dreams. Yet, a glimmer of hope emerges when he hears a voice, a guiding light amid the darkness, reminding him of his responsibilities, especially to his three beloved sons.

With tears in his eyes, 'Man' places his trust in this guiding voice, even though the path ahead remains uncertain. As the conversation unfolds, it becomes clear that challenges and obstacles await him, but 'Man' is unwavering in his resolve to walk this path, guided by a steadfast faith in the belief that a greater purpose will ultimately be fulfilled.

This poignant exploration of 'Man' not only delves into the struggles and setbacks that punctuate one's life journey but also underscores the remarkable resilience and determination that can illuminate even the darkest moments. It serves as a powerful reminder that, no matter the adversities faced, there is always a purpose to pursue and a destination worth striving for.

    • Have you experienced people making assumptions about who you were or how you should act based on any facets of your identity?

    • Have you ever yielded to the pressure to "perform" behaviors and attitudes to fit an image?

    • How do you feel about this notion of performance at this juncture of you life? How do you perceive yourself?

    • Damon made a really good point when he named said that "if we want to fight and resist and transform, we have to use all parts of ourselves." What parts of yourself are easy to access and leverage in movement work?

    • What parts of yourself are challenging to bring forward?

    •  "When a group of people is colonized or occupied, language is the first victim." This stood out because language is so vital because us is what we use to frame ourselves, to tell our stories as well to seek and speak truth.
