Dogs Have Rich Cognitive and Emotional Lives with Alexis Devine from Bunny the "Talking Dog"

In this episode I am joined by Alexis Devine, the woman behind the viral sensation "Bunny the talking dog".   Alexis is the pet parent of Bunny the talking sheepadoodle and Otter the poodle. Inspired by speech-language pathologist Chrisitina Hunger's work with her own dog,  Alexis began training her dog Bunny to speak using an augmentative and alternative communication device ( A.A.C)  otherwise known as sound buttons. When Bunny was about six months old they joined a study with the comparative cognition lab at UC San Diego, which studies whether or not non-humans are able to express themselves in language-like ways .  Much to the delight of millions of followers, Alexis has been documenting her journey with Bunny and Otter on social media all along the way.
We talk a little bit about the science behind these buttons,  her journey with Bunny and Otter, and some of the lessons she has learned along the way.

Leash Walks - Dogs Love Them, And You Should, Too!

Leash Walks - Dogs Love Them, And You Should, Too!

Leash walks can be frustrating when dogs are pulling, putting on the brakes, or  lolly-gagging.  Should you be expected to continuously turn around, or simply allow your dog to sniff everything? Should you be expected to have decompression walks that are really only decompressing for your dog?

In this ep I talk about common recommendations, from continuously turning around, standing still, to allowing your dog to sniff and decide the direction (is this a technique?).  I talk about different apparatuses designed to prevent pulling, and discuss some pros and cons of some popular ones.

I make some suggestions of easy exercises to apply to gain greater focus (no, not treats or the look at me command), and provide suggestions as to how to apply these to your situation and daily life.

Leash walking is all about having the skills to communicate and provide calm, clear direction. Your dog's perception of you and the environment determines his or her behavior.

NOTE - this is not a training guide. The advice is to be adjusted to your needs and specific situation, and dog.

NOTE - for dogs over six months of age

Are Industry Leaders Giving You The Info You Need and Deserve? Let's Explore Some Other Resources.

Welcome to  the final episode of 2021!  This episode was a challenge. So much happened in 2021 in relation to spreading awareness of Canine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, making connections, collaborating, and learning about the industry.

I decided to share, in brief,  the pitfalls of the industry, which, for those who listen other episodes, know all too well.  Through the closed doors I received from influential orgs, I learned a lot about the underlying mechanics of the dog world, which, not surprisingly, function much like other industries - ego, greed and personal agendas rank high.

I took this info and turned it into effective connections and collaborations.  In this episode, I introduce you to changemakers whom you may not be aware of because, like myself, they do not follow the industry norm, and they are not afraid to make waves in the better interest of dogs and the people who love them.

I wish you all the best in 2022 and, as always, I appreciate your support and all you do for the pets in your care.

    Enjoy Your Learning Journey.

The Adolescent Stage - Dog Cognition Skills Kick In - Learn How to Adapt.

The adolescent stage can be very challenging, even for the most experienced dog owners, irrelevant of the dog's upbringing, breed or training history. In this episode, I refer to dogs that have had a traditional upbringing - that of the same home since puppyhood and exposed to socialization, non-aversive training, and positive experiences.  When these dogs suddenly rebel and seemingly forget everything they learn, it is common to assume they are being disobedient, but really what is happening, is their cognitive skills are kicking-in!  They are processing, thinking and reacting differently.  We need to change and adapt the way we work with them to harness these skills.

Study on Street Dogs Reading Traffic Lights and How Those Cognitive Skills Transfer to Adoption; The Story of a Drunk Girl and a Mexi Rescue

Street Dogs in Costa Rica learn many skills to survive. In this ep, I talk about my findings on a study on how they read and decipher street lights.  I provide info on how to recognize and harness these cognitive skills when adopting dogs from the street.

I follow this with a story on how I got one of my Mexi-Rescues and how it brings to light the question as to why some dogs can survive on the street and some not-so-much.

    The Culture of Dogdom

    The Culture of Dogdom

People are in constant conversation with their dogs, says dog scientist Alexandra Horowitz, and dogs pick up on things like our tone of voice. "We think meaning is all in the words but for them, the meaning is in the context, and they’re working very hard to understand it.” Horowitz studies dog cognition and the relationship between dogs and their human owners. She runs the Horowitz Dog Cognition Lab at Barnard College and has written widely about dogs. In a wide-ranging discussion with Aspen Ideas Festival Executive Director Kitty Boone, she talks about how dogs may have been domesticated, why some dogs are serious-minded and others easy-going, and the best thing we can do for our dogs (it's easier than you think).

Can Puppies "Think Cognitively"? Are Cognitive Exercises Influential During Puppyhood? Marc Bekoff's Newest Release.

    Welcome!

This episode was inspired by a ClubHouse Chat with the Director of the Thinking Dog Centre and Asst Prof at Hunter College, Sarah Byosiere, who talked about cognitive abilities in dogs and puppies. I often get asked why I do not work with puppies - find out why!  How are the cognitive skills of puppies harnessed and applied differently to that of dogs?

Yup! Marc Bekoff sent me an email about his new book - get the scoop on how it relates to my passion for street dogs.

Stay tuned for the release of the second edition of my book. I chat about that at the end of this episode.

    Enjoy!

What Do We Do When Adopted Dogs Won't Eat?; The Decompression Period - Do Dogs Need It?; A Scientific Study on Street Dogs and Behavioral Issues.

Adopting a dog is rewarding, but can be challenging due to inherent stress.  A reaction to stress is, as with humans, not eating, which can be scary! Common techniques often fail because they are not addressing the reason - in other words, we need to find the reason to determine solution. What if the dog is not stressed? What if their are no physical ailments?  Maybe the solution requires logic and an understanding of how dog's think and feel and what is important to each dog.

We then chat about the Decompression period - is it simply an extension of the 3 day, 3 week, 3 month "meme"?  Do dogs need it?

A recent scientific study out of the UK compares the opinions of veterinarians to those of dog owners regarding aggression and anxiety in former street dogs adopted into homes. The results are...well....they certainly bring home the need to more effectively address aggression and anxiety in adopted dogs.  We got this covered, but are the vets listening?

Connecting Scientific Studies on Dog Cognition to that of Common Dog Behavior Problems and the Best Method to Address Unwanted Dog Behavior.

Connecting Scientific Studies on Dog Cognition to that of Common Dog Behavior Problems and the Best Method to Address Unwanted Dog Behavior.

Billie uses 4 scientific studies on dog cognition to explain why we need a method grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy to address a common unwanted behavior in dogs over 6 months.

In this episode we explore four cognitive abilities by introducing the studies which prove dogs have these abilities. I discuss how these abilities, although considered positive, can cause common unwanted behaviors and why suppressing these skills can increase the unwanted behavior.

Memory,  Emotions, Object Permanence, Object Differentiation, Dexterity, and the ability to understand that an action has a result are some of the recent trends in scientific studies.  If dogs can think cognitively, and their behaviors, whether considered "good" or "bad" (wanted or unwanted) are a result of these skills, we need to harness these skills to understand these behaviors. By remaining under the Operant Conditioning umbrella (positive reinforcement and balanced training), we simply cannot harness their cognitive abilities, which explains why addressing these behaviors is often challenging or impossible.

NOTE:  At the time of recording this episode, I did not discuss counter conditioning as a method to address unwanted behaviors. There are other episodes which discuss counter conditioning and why it is limiting or ineffective in addressing behaviors.

NOTE: You do not need to be a scientist or a certified dog trainer to understand the info in  this episode. If you have questions, please contact Billie at billie@upwarddogology.com

Diving Deep into a Scientific Study on Adolescent Dog Behavior. Perhaps the methods we use perpetuate the behaviors associated with adolescence.

Welcome to the first episode of 2021 where we dissect a scientific study which, although valid and adhering to professional standards, begs the question as to whether the exercise,  grounded in positive reinforcement training used to determine the results,  is a factor in creating the change in behaviors commonly associated with the adolescent stage.

In other words: are the methods we use to solve the problems actually causing the problems?

Scientific studies and experts validate the need for a formula grounded in C.B.T. for dogs. I talk about the future of UPWARD Dogology.

Welcome to the final episode of 2020, where I give a short description on my developments with professionals in the early part of 2020 and then moved onto researching and pursuing ways to spread awareness of CBT for dogs by making connections with all kinds of interesting people and professionals.

I talk about the surge of scientific studies in dog behavior and provide an example of how a common study on object permanence validates UPWARD Dogology.  I then talk briefly about the study by Dr. Naomi Harvey on adolescent dogs, and provide a challenge for the listeners.

2021 will be all about spreading awareness in the effort to make UPWARD Dogology mainstream. Thank you for all your support.

Meet 11 yr. old Kash, founder of Kash's Kreations, a small business that donates big bucks to local rescues. Dogs with anxiety are often over-looked. Learn how "productive patience" helps get them adopted.

Kashton Weinber is an entrepreneur, a volunteer,  artist and a philanthropist.  At eleven years of age, he has made a huge impact on the lives of  animals and the people who help them.  He is the founder of Kash's Kreations and donates money generated from the sales to local rescue organizations, and he has adopted animals, including a very special dog who had a checkered past resulting in anxiety.

I follow our interview with a quick look into the challenges of adopting or fostering dogs with anxiety and how UPWARD Dogology has helped the people who help these dogs.

The dirty topic of "Dominance". Comparing dogs and humans in respect to communication, perception and how we project ourselves with guest Sandra Davis of The PeopleSmart Academy.

Dominance is a buzzword, and often controversial topic, in the dog world. Why?  Well, it has a negative connotation, yet at the same time, dog owners are often told they need to gain dominance over their dog.  What is acceptable? Is gaining Dominance really our goal? Is expecting our place on the hierarchy ladder and our rules and policies to be respected asking too much?

This  thought-provoking piece on Dominance is followed by a chat with Sandra Davis, co-owner of The People Smart Academy.  Comparing humans and canines is, again, a controversial topic, yet, as professions, we find it effective (yes, Sandra compares humans to dogs!).  How we express ourselves, read others, teach and coach, and communicate is so important in all we do in life.

Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! Season 4 is interviews with people and organizations that help animals. Increase your awareness and be part of the solution by listening, sharing, and reviewing.  Season 3 dives deep into trending methods. Are they right for you and your dog? Season 2 shares the learning journey of my clients with dogs with different issues and backgrounds; always interesting and a great way to feel a connections with others who have similar experiences.  Season 1 starts by sharing my unique learning journey and then dives into why positive reinforcement training (and practices under that "umbrella") are often limiting, ineffective and/or counter-productive with dogs over 6 months. It finishes with an introduction into cognitive behavioral therapy and UPWARD Dogology.

Meeting and working with fearful or aggressive dogs. The importance of the approach.

Meeting and working with fearful or aggressive dogs. The importance of the approach.

One of the most important approaches of UPWARD Dogology is "Never rush to your end goal". Sound obvious? In this episode I use the example of working with an aggressive dog to show how trainers commonly focus on the dog liking them or using treats to increase comfort, which can cause increased frustration for both the dog and their human.

A Scientific Study on Changes Needed in the Adoption Process. Is the Need to Ensure Successful Adoptions Over-Complicating the Process?

A Scientific Study on Changes Needed in the Adoption Process. Is the Need to Ensure Successful Adoptions Over-Complicating the Process?

In this episode, I refer to a scientific study conducted by The Dog Rehoming Project, on the need for rescue organizations to focus on the post adoption process. Is the excessive pre-adoption form an indication of the number of returns, and is this excessive form the solution?

Rescue orgs and dog experts are promoting a change in mindset that focuses on patience and compassion, yet can these philosophies be unintentionally placing unjustified blame on the adopters?

I then dive into how suggestions made with the best of intentions are clear indications of the challenges faced when adopting a dog or working with dogs to address behaviors.

Why are Avoidance, Distraction and "Simply Managing Your Dog's Fear" acceptable training advice, and are dog owners satisfied with these limited options?

Is a Decompression Period necessary for all dogs? A unnecessary decompression period can backfire, causing some dogs to rebel, or feel uncomfortable.

To effectively integrate dogs into our homes, we need transferable skills that start during the pre-adoption process. Learn more about transferable skills and the benefits of Canine CBT.

Gadgets, Rules, and Tools! Are We Being Saturated? How Are These Effecting Our Relationship With Our Dogs?

Gadgets, Rules, and Tools! Are We Being Saturated? How Are These Effecting Our Relationship With Our Dogs?

In this episode, I talk about the reliance on gadgets to address behaviors and problems. These gadgets are not necessarily aversive or harmful, such as a slow-feed bowl, but are they preventing a holistic approach, communication and bonding?

Some gadgets are aversive, yet are considered non-aversive simply because of the way they are marketed., such as the no-bark collar. How are these tools harming dogs and our ability to proactively prevent issues and address the root of the behaviors?

When these gadgets gather in the closet, and the behaviors are still present, this can lead to increased rules and restrictions, which can also decrease bond and the ability to easily integrate dogs into our lifestyle.

This episode, as all episodes, provides thought provoking information to allow you to make the best decision for your dog and your family.

Client Learning Journey-Dog Dynamics within a household - dominance or hierarchy? SnipPet Piece-Choosing a trainer or behaviourist based on your needs

Client Learning Journey-Dog Dynamics within a household - dominance or hierarchy? SnipPet Piece-Choosing a trainer or behaviourist based on your needs

UPWARD Dogology episodes contain a “JOURNEY” and a “SnipPet”  The Journey describes the process, challenges and successes with a client and their dog. The SnipPets are tidbits of info, tips, “what’s trending”, opinions and advice from experts on anything and everything dog related.

In this episode Billie takes us through the Learning Journey of Cam and Lynn and their dogs Molly and Max. Molly is a calm, mature dog and Max is just over 6 months old.  Molly started to snap at Max at three specific times - these are factors that are important to Molly, requiring Cam and Lynn to apply methods that change the way Max views them and, in turn, change the way Molly views Max.

The SnipPet Piece discusses different types of trainers/behaviourists and why they may, or may be, a good match for your needs and your dog's personality.

    Enjoy your learning journey!

Adopting a Dog during Quarantine? You’re Not Alone

Adopting a Dog during Quarantine? You’re Not Alone

Have you considered adopting a dog lately? You’re not alone. Animal shelters and nonprofits are seeing a rise in the number of people adopting and fostering pets during the Covid-19 crisis. Before you bring home a new canine companion, dog cognition expert Alexandra Horowitz says there are a few things to consider. Horowitz, who runs the Dog Cognition Lab at Barnard College, wants these newly formed dog-human relationships to last beyond the pandemic. She also speaks with Brian Hare, professor of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University, about the mind of a dog. What’s your dog thinking when they welcome you home? How do they perceive you and the world around them?
