E-collars are very controversial tools. Many think that they should be banned and outlawed. Many others work with them to transform the lives of dogs and their relationships with their families. Much of this divide seems to be centered around people's experience levels with these tools. As with most things in life,  knowledge, and experience are required in order to be able to make informed decisions on these tools. Dogtra has been doing more to help expand the availability of accurate information than most. They sent over Lorraine and Pete to chat with us. I have had many people contacting me lately about dog training for dogs that have small children in the home. For some reason, people seem to think that dogs should allow children to do whatever they want to them. 

If you can't already tell, this has me quite upset and it has been heavy on my heart so I needed to get it off of my chest.

What do you look for in a dog trainer? What makes one stand out above the rest? When you seek information online, who resonates with you the most?

I've been asking myself this question for a while now, and while you may have already known this about me, I'm finally ready to put nutrition front and center in my dog training.

The effects that health has on behavior are becoming more well-documented and as a dog trainer, it has to be the first thing we work on with a new client.

The hard reality is that dogs are sometimes euthanized for behavioral reasons. It has been a very hot topic in the dog training and dog behavioral worlds for decades. Naturally, this means that it's a topic that isn't openly discussed very often. Possibly because of how difficult it can be to navigate while allowing for cooler heads to prevail. Possibly because it's a tough pill to swallow for someone who may come to the realization that they can't save every dog. Possibly because the topics of genetics and training methods can already be hot topics in themselves without euthanasia ever needing to factor into the conversation.

Brent and Mariano have decided to take this topic on. To ensure that they tackle this properly, they've asked for support from two very well-accomplished and well-respected dog trainers. They are Michael Ellis and Denise Fenzi. We are grateful to each of them for spending the time to help us offer listeners a comprehensive discussion regarding behavioral euthanasia.

In this episode, Mariano and Brent discuss why we do what we do. It sounds like a very simple question. However, it's an important question to ask yourself. This came as a tip from Jay Jack, who talks about the importance of staying on task. However, in order to stay on task, we need to know what the task is.

The goal of this episode is to explain the "why" behind the "what". Brent and Mariano discuss a few personal reasons that they have both decided to become dog trainers. Why they train and teach in the ways that they do. And why it's important for all trainers to ask themselves why they do things in the way that they do them. It's a great opportunity to remind ourselves of what our real goals are. This helps us avoid the common pitfalls and distractions that exist in this field. We hope you enjoy this episode.
