    Toxic Positivity: Part 1

    Toxic Positivity: Part 1

In the realm of psychology (and in the realm of everyone's Instagram), the concept of toxic positivity has provoked intense debate and polarizing opinions. However, a deeper exploration into scientific literature reveals a thought-provoking paradox: the potential benefits of what some are quick to deem as toxic. In Part 1 of this series, co-hosts Megan Lund and Ryan Marquardt explore the intricacies of relentless positivity, highlighting research and sharing personal stories that challenge popular assumptions. Brace yourself for an intellectual journey that unravels the complex relationship between positivity and well-being, leaving you with a fresh perspective on the emotional, mental, social and physical power of "toxic positivity" (which is a term that probably needs to be rebranded at this point).

Generally defined as an overemphasis on positivity to the point of suppressing negative emotions, this episode highlights the subjective nature of the term. While also recognizing the "negative" effects associated with toxic positivity, Megan and Ryan present thought-provoking counter-arguments and propose new dialogue around the issue. Navigating  various aspects of toxic positivity, Megan and Ryan dish on everything from emotional suppression, spiritual bypassing and spiritual narcissism to the cult of positivity, the impact of toxic positivity on marginalized communities, and the correlation between toxic positivity and capitalism. While acknowledging the concerns and criticisms surrounding this new age buzzword, Megan and Ryan offer compelling insights, drawing from their own experiences and research, to present a more nuanced perspective.

Amidst the discussion, they also highlight the positive effects of what some may label as toxic positivity, such as a longer life expectancy, improved physical health, increased resilience, enhanced creativity and productivity, greater happiness and life satisfaction, improved mental health, more satisfying relationships and beyond. They draw a connection between spirituality and toxic positivity, exploring how new age concepts like The Law of Attraction and The Law of Assumption can be both beneficial and misguided.

Part 1 sets the stage, asking listeners to consider if it's possible to uphold a persistently positive outlook on life without sacrificing authenticity or refusing to engage in the prismatic emotional experiences that come with being human. Approaching the topic with an open-minded passion and a knack for playing devil's advocate, Megan and Ryan seek to create a space where diverse perspectives can be shared and understood. Stay tuned for Part 2, where they will further explore intricate themes related to toxic positivity, reveal eye-opening research that represents all sides of this debate, and offer credible action steps that will help you be more nimble with negative and positive mindsets.

Ep. #19 - how we deal with worry

Worries in our lives can be so easy to NOT deal with. It is so much easier to just worry and let the burden of worries just take over your mind.

These worries we have are also a very internal struggle, because no one really knows how someone else is dealing with, at times in their lives!

In this episode, we talk about the consequences of worry in our lives, and how we try to fight against it.

It can be SO easy to just let the worries of life wash over ourselves. Sometimes it can seem like ALL we do is see the negative in our lives. But life is so GOOD. We need to let go of our worries to really see the good in life.

We go into how we let go of worries, and why its important for us to talk about what is going on in our lives.
