Chapter Twenty-Three - Daenerys 2 - A Storm of Swords | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Daenerys lays her eyes upon the Unsullied slave army with mixed emotion. She then takes her frustrations of the day out on Ser Jorah. She confronts Irri about a late-night tryst between the two women. Finally, she asks Jorah if buying the slave army is more of a Rhaegar or Viserys move. Simon and Mackelly hug their dogs.

    Chapter Review:
Daenerys Targaryen has made it to Astapor in Slaver’s Bay. She meets with slave master Kraznys mo Nakloz to see his Unsullied eunuch slave soldiers. Dany and Arstan Whitebeard are aghast at the terrible training process the Unsullied must endure. She decides to think on whether she wants to purchase the slaves to create an army for herself.
On her way back to the ships, Dany thinks of Jorah’s kiss and how inappropriate it was. However, as much as she found it unwanted, the kiss has stirred something within her she thought died with Drogo. When she and Arstan arrive at the ships, she lashes out at Jorah, punctuating her feelings with a slap across his face.
Later that evening, she confides to Jorah that the act of buying a slave army doesn't feel in-line with what her brother Rhaegar would’ve done. Rhaegar had free men fighting for him. Jorah confirms that Rhaegar did have free, noble, and brave men. However, it all amounted to nothing, as Rhaegar lost the war and the Iron Throne. Whereas Dany needs to win.

    159. Bufflusionist

Grab your stake and crucifix pendant, we're going vampire-hunting! Well, vampire-etymology-hunting. The podcast Buffering the Vampire Slayer, which recaps the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode by episode, invited me to answer their listeners' questions of language that the show had provoked. Together with BVTS hosts Kristin Russo and Jenny Owen Youngs, I tackle the etymology of coven, vampire/vampyre, wigging out, the name Buffy and Bovril; as well as google as a verb, conlang on TV, and why Latin is so often the language of spells and spookiness.

There are several swears in this episode.

Chapter Forty-Eight - Daenerys 4 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Daenerys visits the House of the Undying. She faces visions and trials in the pursuit of wisdom. But eventually has to be rescued from the clutches of the phantoms by Drogon, breathing fire like a real dragon. Simon and Mackelly get out the marshmallows.

    Chapter Review:
Daenerys Targaryen is not getting what she wants from the citizens of Qarth, so she’s going to try Pyatt Pree and the warlocks of the House of the Undying. None of her friends like the plan. Pree gives her advice for getting to the Undying Ones, once within, and she heads inside.

She has multiple visions, of her father, her brother, her other brother, and other strange imagery. None of it is terribly helpful to either her, nor the sleuthy reader. She finally meets the Undying. They are spectral husks who have no wisdom to offer, beyond riddles and are determined to imprison her.

Drogon, who’s come along for just such an eventuality, sets fire to the Undying and the great heart that appears to be their life-force. Dany and Drogon get out of their to the fury of Pree, who tries to kill Dany, but is prevented by Drogon and her bloodriders.

Chapter Forty - Daenerys 3 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Chapter Forty - Daenerys 3 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Daenerys fails to convince any of the grandees of Qarth to fund her plans to invade Westeros. Factions vye for her favor, but all seem bent on ownership of her dragons. She decides that it’s time to see the warlocks. Mackelly and Simon survey her options.

    Chapter Review:
Daenerys Targaryen rides in Xaro Xhoan Daxos’ palanquin having been rebuffed by the Pureborn of Qarth. Her bribes and supplications were for nothing. She was a novelty to them and no more. He reiterates his offer to marry her and provide all that she will ever need. Qarth custom is that married couples maintain their own property, so she would not have to share her dragons. However, Dany thinks he’s more interested in the young male servants that populate his house.

They stop to watch a firemage perform amazing tricks, and Dany is approached by Quaithe. The shadowbinder explains that the firemage’s powers have skyrocketed since Dany arrived. The dragons amplify magic. Quaithe again warns Dany that nobody is to be trusted, that all want her dragons for themselves, and that she should go east to Asshai to find the truth.

Later, Ser Jorah tells Dany the one fact that Xaro is concealing. On their wedding day, each can ask the other for a gift that cannot be denied. One of her dragons would surely be forfeit. They conclude that they’re not getting anywhere, but Dany cannot understand why the comet led them to Qarth if not to provide them with soldiers and ships. They decide their next, and last, stop in Qarth will be with Pyat Pree and the warlocks.

Chapter Twenty-Seven - Daenerys 2 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Chapter Twenty-Seven - Daenerys 2 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Daenerys and her khalasar arrive at Qarth. Various factions vie for her favor. Ser Jorah brings news from Westeros that King Robert is dead, his son Joffrey sits the throne, and the usurper’s allies the Starks and Lannisters are at war. Dany is thrilled but Jorah cautions that nothing has really changed. Simon and Mackelly rehash the old news.

    Chapter Review:
Daenerys Targaryen and her crew enter Qarth. It is awash with colors and life, everything that Vaes Tolorro was not. Dany displays her dragons as she is paraded through the city led by Pyat Pree and Xaro Xhoan Daxos. The citizens are naturally amazed. The two men make bids for her affection by undermining the other, Dany ultimately choosing Daxos’ offer of a whole wing of his giant manse. The masked woman Quaithe warns Dany to beware all of them. Jorah concurs.

While Dany gets a bath, her men visit the rest of the city - she wants to know about the parts that her parade route did not enter. Ser Jorah is sent to the docks to find any news from Westeros. While she bathes, she tries to come up with a plausible route for her back to the Iron Throne. Her enemies, Robert Baratheon, Eddard Stark, Tywin Lannister and Jamie Lannister loom large in her imagination, and her vulnerable position is obvious to all.

Jorah returns with Captain Quhuru Mo of the Summer Isles. He has reliable, although not detailed intelligence, that Robert Baratheon is dead. That Ned Stark has been labeled a traitor and that Westeros is at war with itself over the line of succession. She’s delighted and promises the captain a handsome reward when he visits her in King’s Landing and she sits the Iron Throne. Later Jorah counsels her to not broadcast her intentions, but she wants the world to know she’s coming.

Chapter Twelve - Daenerys 1 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

Chapter Twelve - Daenerys 1 - A Clash of Kings | A Song of Ice and Fire

We rejoin the Mother of Dragons as she chooses to traverse the barren Red Waste, to avoid her many enemies. The going is arduous and her Khalasar is diminished still further. Outriders find the city of Qarth, emissaries of which are very keen to meet the dragons. Ser Jorah, Mackelly, and Simon all reckon she needs to tread carefully.

    Chapter Review:
Daenerys Targaryen considers her options. All directions are bad. Her Khalasar is miniscule and mostly comprises those unable to fight. Her dragons are suckling babes unable to defend themselves. Her enemies abound. The comet seems to point south east - so that way they go into the desert known as the Red Waste.

Things go badly and many people (including Doreah) and horses die before they discover an abandoned city with fruit trees and wells. They rest there. Ser Jorah tells his queen of his former life as Lord of Bear Island. How he fell in love with Lynesse Hightower and married her. But her need for finer things bankrupted Jorah leading to a life of crime, and ultimately to his self-imposed banishment to Essos. He tells the Khaleesi that she looks like Lynesse.

Dany sends her three bloodriders on as scouts, in different directions. The first two return empty-handed, but Jhogo comes back with three dignitaries from the city of Qarth. They would welcome the Khalasar and the dragons to their home.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Daenerys Targaryen - Daughter of King Aerys. Widow of Khal Drogo. Mother of Dragons. Claimant to the Iron Throne. Khaleesi of a small Khalasar in Essos.

Doreah - Lysine handmaid to Daenerys Targaryen.

    Chapter Seventy-Two - Daenerys 10 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Seventy-Two - Daenerys 10 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Dany oversees preparation for Drogo’s funeral pyre. In addition to a bit of wood, and a lot of oil, she adds to the kindling the Khal’s various treasures, Mirri Maz Duur, another dead horse, all three of her priceless dragon eggs, and eventually herself. She (well, she is the last dragon) survives and the three eggs hatch into dragons. Seriously: dragons. The boys don their oven-gloves and pay homage.

    Chapter Review:
Dany orders the khalasar to gather enough wood to create a fire for Drogo’s funeral. They liberally splash it with oil to aid the burn. Dany reassures Ser Jorah that she does not intend to die tonight. She adds the eggs to the fire, to his consternation - selling one of those bad-boys could fund their retirement! She frees the slaves, gives gifts to her khas - who disavow her brazenly to her face, and has Mirri chained to the bonfire for her sins.

Mirri believes that Dany is trying some amateur blood magic of her own (she could hardly do it worse than the professionals). As the fire is lit everyone backs off, but Dany. The last Targaryen is drawn to the flames even as her clothes and hair are burned away. The pyre collapses and she is lost from view.

Hours later, when the fire has cooled enough, Jorah and the rest of the khalasar approach to find Daenerys Stormborn suckling her three new babies. Dragons...

    Chapter Sixty-Eight - Daenerys 9 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Sixty-Eight - Daenerys 9 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Dany wakes to a whole slew of bad news. Her baby Rhaego was stillborn and monstrous. Khal Drogo is alive but catatonic. The Khalasar is gone. The boys take a long hard look at Mirri Maz Duur’s medical license and consider what Dany’s options are now.

    Chapter Review:
Daenerys  Targaryen has vivid dreams about the waking of the dragon. The dreams begin with the familiar warning, “You don't want to wake the dragon, do you?” But as the dream narrows and becomes more prophetic, the words are dropped until all that is left is a rather different order(?)/suggestion(?) “Wake the dragon.”

When the all-too-human Daenerys wakes, it is to an entirely different world. Rhaego was born but was a creature of nightmares, with leathery wings and a tail. He did not survive. Drogo lives, but his spirit is gone. She confronts Mirri Maz Duur who, despite having a few things she could say to save herself, admits that she was seeking revenge for what happened to her people. Drogo lives, but his life is intolerably circumscribed. Mirri points out that her own life was rich and full until Drogo came. She is unrepentant.

Dany does everything in her power to revive Drogo, but nothing works. When she’s convinced that he cannot come back to her, she smothers him with a pillow.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Khal Drogo - Lord of a giant Dothraki Khalasar. Husband to Daenerys Targaryen.
Daenerys Targaryen - Khaleesi to a Dothraki khalasar, wife to Khal Drogo, and younger sister to Viserys. Pregnant with Rhaego Targaryen, the Stallion who Mounts the World.

    Chapter Sixty-One - Daenerys 7 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Sixty-One - Daenerys 7 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Dany annoys some of the khalasar by rescuing new slaves from rape and murder. Khal Drogo hurt in the raid that won the slaves, backs her up. One of the women Dany saved is a healer and she agrees to patch up the wounded Khal. Mackelly and Simon cast an expert eye over the stitchwork.

    Chapter Review:
Khal Drogo’s khalasar stumbles across Khal Ogo and crew attacking a town of sheep-farmers. The peaceful Lhazareen are thrilled when Drogo’s forces attack and destroy the rival Dothraki. However, their relief is short-lived: Drogo’s men finish the job off and destroy the village killing or enslaving everyone.

The warriors set about systematic rape and pillage. Dany, against advice, rescues several women from their plight. This causes dissent in the ranks, but Khal Drogo cannot help but take her side. He’s picked up a few wounds and she wants him to call for a medic. They have their hands full, but one of Dany’s entourage of new slaves (Mirri Maz Duur) offers to help.

Drogo’s blood riders have misgivings. A female healer is obviously a witch of some sort. But Dany thinks she can trust her. Drogo grits his teeth as hot wine is applied and sutures are inserted. Qotho warns Mirri that her life depends on the Khal’s uneventful recovery. Dany is impressed by the bedside manner (of Mirri, not Qotho) and asks her to be midwife at Rhaego’s birth.

    Chapter Fifty-Four - Daenerys 6 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Fifty-Four - Daenerys 6 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Dany survives a poisoning plot thanks to Ser Jorah's timely intervention. Khal Drogo is so grateful he gives Mormont a horse and Dany what she wishes: the Khalasar will cross the Narrow Sea and take back the Iron Throne for her. Mackelly and Simon fortify their castles in anticipation.

    Chapter Review:
Khal Drogo has got no interest in Westeros. As far as he is concerned, the world that his future son Rhaego will mount ends at the Narrow Sea. Daenerys Targaryen doesn't push her luck (who would after witnessing Viserys' coronation?)

Drogo goes hunting. Daenerys goes to the market. Ser Jorah gets news from Westeros. A wine-seller digs out a special cask just for the Khaleesi. Ser Jorah thinks the merchant should sample his own wares. The man apparently doesn't like wine and tries unsuccessfully to high-tail it out of there. Wait a minute! It was poison. A letter from Illyrio Mopatis to Viserys confirms that a lordship is on offer to anyone who can murder a Targaryen.

Daenerys feels the dragon stirring within her, and tries to wake her dragon eggs with fire. No luck. Drogo kills a white lion, but that is quickly forgotten when he learns of the plot. The usurper tried to kill his wife, in Vaes Dothrak? He has gone too far. The best horse in the khalasar for Ser Jorah for saving Daenerys. And puke-bags, at the ready we're going on a cruise everybody.

Pregnant with Rhaego, the Stallion who Mounts the World.
Viserys Targaryen - Deposed heir to the Iron Throne. Older brother to Daenerys. Killed by Khal Drogo.
Illyrio Mopatis - Wealthy magister from the Free City of Pentos.
Jorah Mormont - Exiled former lord of Bear Island. Advisor to Daenerys Targryen. Spying on the Targaryens for Lord Varys.
Doreah - Lysine handmaid to Daenerys Targaryen. She’s charged with teaching Dany the womanly arts. Her previous career in a pleasure house of Lys makes her something of an expert.

    Chapter Forty-Six - Daenerys 5 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Forty-Six - Daenerys 5 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Daenerys and Khal Drogo go for their second trimester gender-reveal with the Dosh Khaleen. A snack of raw horse’s heart, sex in public, and a celebratory feast  - all in a typical day for a hard-working Khaleesi. The portents are what the happy couple were looking for: a boy, strong, healthy, oh, and the long-prophesied Khal who will bring all the people of the world into one great Khalasar...so that’ll be nice. Mac and Simon pay homage.

    Chapter Review:
Daenerys Targaryen visits the Dosh Khaleen and manages to chow down an entire raw horse's heart. That is the ultimate test, and elicits a positive reaction from the old crones. The unborn child will be the Stallion who Mounts the World. Prophecy said that he’d arrive eventually to unite all people into one giant Khalasar (but then, who would they plunder from?)

After a bath and a bit of hanky-panky, a feast is thrown. It’s all fun and games until Dany’s brother Viserys arrives and really rains on the whole parade. He’s drunk and feels that he’s owed the Iron Throne.

Viserys gets belligerent. Threatens to cut Dany’ baby out there and then. Khal Drogo relents. Viserys will have his golden crown. The bloodriders hold him down as Dany watches on, while Drogo dumps molten gold on her brother’s head. Dany observes that he cannot have been a true dragon, because fire wouldn’t have killed him.

Viserys Targaryen - Deposed heir to the Iron Throne. Older brother to Daenerys.
Jorah Mormont - Exiled former lord of Bear Island. Advisor to Daenerys Targryen. Spying on the Targaryens for Ser Varys.
Rhaegar Targaryen - Crown prince to Aerys Targaryen. Killed by Robert Baratheon during the Battle at the Trident.

    Chapter Thirty-Six - Daenerys 4 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Thirty-Six - Daenerys 4 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Daenerys and the khalasar have made it to Vaes Dothrak. Daeny plans a night evening with her brother that goes very awry. We also get Jorah's take on how the Dothraki would do in battle in Westeros. We tell you all about it and give you as many insights as we can pack into one episode. Plus, Simon shares a story that might just put a smile on your face.

    Chapter Review:
Daenerys Targaryen, her brother Viserys, Ser Jorah Mormont, and the rest of Khal Drogo's khalasar have finally made it to Vaes Dothrak, the lone Dothraki city. Daeny is surprised to see how big, but sparse, the city is. We learn that Viserys is about out of patience waiting for his promised 10,000 Dothraki warriors that he was promised for Daeny's hand in marriage. We also find out that Ser Jorah seems to have no respect left for his supposed king. Jorah tells Daeny that the Dothraki have the advantage against a Westerosi army in the field, but would not be able to sustain a siege.

The question is whether Robert would be smart enough to utilize the advantage of the castles, or if he would rush to meet the Dothraki in battle. When Daeny is told Khal Drogo will be away their first evening in the city, she plans a nice dinner with her brother, where she plans to present him gifts of traditional Dothraki clothing. Things go wrong when Viserys thinks Daeny has commanded him to her, and get worse when he sees her gifts. A heated sibling dispute ensues, leaving Daeny sad and bruised and Viserys furious and bleeding from his face.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Daenerys Targaryen - Khaleesi to a Dothraki khalasar and younger sister to Viserys.
Viserys Targaryen - Deposed heir to the Iron Throne.
Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled knight from Westeros. Sworn sword to Viserys Targaryen.
Khal Drogo - The leader of a large Dothraki khalasar. Husband to Daenerys Targaryen.
Cohollo - Bloodrider to Khal Drogo.
Irri, Jiqui, and Doreah - Daeny's handmaidens.
Bloodrider - Sworn protectors of Dothraki khals.
Dothraki Sea - Vaes Dothrak is the only city of the Dothraki people. It is located in the northeast of the vast Dothraki sea.

Interview with Language Creator David Peterson (Game of Thrones, Dune, The 100, Doctor Strange)

Interview with Language Creator David Peterson (Game of Thrones, Dune, The 100, Doctor Strange)
"Polyglots and language creators...that Venn diagram is almost a circle." In this episode, language creator David Peterson sat down with me to talk about language creation, language ownership, and the joy of it all. No other interview has had such an impact on me, the level of mastery in language creation was completely unclear to me. Every single choice that you're making is an active choice. Nothing in a language has to be that way. Here are just a few of the questions we discussed on this show. If a language is created, why is its grammar not easy? How do Hollywood actors react when they have to deliver dialogue in an invented language? How many languages do you need to speak in order to create a language? (spoiler: I have too many!) After creating a language, do you want the world to learn this new language? And David also explained the phases language creators go through. You create the language...at least you think that's what you're doing You realise you actually had lots of choices and you start making copy-languages You realise you don't need to create your language like another one, you start making the language you actually want If you're fascinated by language invention and created languages after listening to this interview, I recommend David's own book "The Art of Language Invention". (see links below) Thank you to David Peterson (https://www.fluent.show/guests/david) for this episode introduction. Special Guest: David Peterson.
