Do Dairy Cows Need Grain? Dairy Cows and More with Shawn and Beth Dougherty

Do Dairy Cows Need Grain? Dairy Cows and More with Shawn and Beth Dougherty

This episode features Shawn and Beth Dougherty. You might have heard our prior episode with the Doughertys discussing low-input farming, but this episode focuses much more on dairy cows. One of my favorite questions that came up was whether or not a dairy cow must be fed grain - this questions and more are covered throughout the episode and we hope you find the discussion inspring and of value to you, wherever you are in your homesteading journey.

    ___

Shawn and Beth Dougherty have been farming together since the 1980's

Using intensive grazing as the primary source of food energy, the Doughertys raise dairy and beef cows, sheep, farm-fed hogs, and a variety of poultry, producing most of the food, and feed, on the farm. Their ongoing project is to identify and test the potential for operating a farm and homestead with minimal off-farm inputs.

They are the authors of The Independent Farmstead, actively contribute to Plain Value magazine, have written for Mother Earth News, Hobby Farms and more. They have been featured in various interviews, podcasts, and conferences

Shawn and Beth promote an outline of farming and homesteading that is inspiring to us as we consider the ways we engage in a stewardship model which considers homesteading, farming and the Catholic Faith.

We are excited to bring you this interview as a production of Little Way Farm and Homestead. If you are interested in helping this podcast grow and reach a larger audience, please consider leaving a review wherever you are listening to the episode, and share with someone you know!

Bounce Back From Burnout And Live The Dream - MTP185

Bounce Back From Burnout And Live The Dream - MTP185

When my co-host Jennifer Dougherty was in the business world, she started to feel a bit burned out. What did she do to pull herself out of that conundrum and change her mindset? Well, it all led to her to write a book on how she beat burnout and got focused. How can you too genuinely come to grips with what your dreams really are, and why you're dreaming them? And what if you're already doing that which you genuinely dreamed of doing, and yet are still feeling crispy around the edges? How does that mess with your productivity, let alone your mindset? How do talent, passion, strategy and hard work intersect to contribute to dream realization? What are the ironic bad feelings people can experience even after apparently accomplishing what they dreamed of doing? Are dreams overrated, given how people tend to feel once they've fulfilled them? Is it unreasonable and possibly even counter-productive to encourage our kids to dream big? And what of the idea that we often don't even realize what we wanted all along until we get it? How in the world would we reverse engineer such a concept? Do people sabotage their dreams willingly when they can't see past the moment? And of course, what do you do if you feel like your dreams aren't working out as planned? Isn't it time for you to start living your dream...or possibly even dreaming BIGGER? Let's talk. Godzilla II: King Of The Monsters (Feat. Saleem)

This episode, the FMB reluctantly cover the sequel to Legendary's Godzilla 2014 at special guest, Saleem's insistence.

They boys power through this episode with the energy of kids in detention, but their guest makes the proceedings considerably lighter and the hosts have fun with discussion about previous iterations of Godzilla himself and wild speculation on the what the inevitable sequel may have in store.

    Enjoy!
