    Doulas Are For Partners Too

    Doulas Are For Partners Too

Welcome back to Birthwise! In this episode, we will be discussing the ways in which doulas can support partners.

Partners and Doulas are two very different and equally valuable roles. Doulas have intimate knowledge of birth, your partner has intimate knowledge of you. The roles are parallel, they don’t interrupt each other, but instead walk alongside each other on their way to the same destination

It is so important for partners to have an empowering experience as they step into parenthood, and as they support their partner to do the same.

During labor and delivery, partners can often feel overwhelmed and unsure of how to best support their loved one. As doulas, it is our job to step in and provide guidance and support to both the partner and the birthing person. I share a few tangible tips and tricks for doulas to use to help partners feel more confident in their ability to support their loved one during this important time. This week’s freebie is my Questions for Informed Choice handout. This is a great opportunity to work with partners to practice conversations surrounding interventions and giving them the tools and language to take ownership over these conversations.

Tune in as we dive into these important topics and learn how doulas can help partners feel empowered and confident as they rock their new role.

    Creating a Postpartum Wellness Plan

    Creating a Postpartum Wellness Plan

In this episode, we'll be walking through a postpartum wellness plan and the conversations we can have with clients to get them thinking about the logistics of planning intentionally for postpartum. We'll discuss how to prepare for the physical, emotional, and logistical challenges of this new stage of life.

I created a Postpartum Wellness Plan template as a newer Doula and it evolved as I prepared for my second baby. My postpartum with my first baby was rough, and I was determined to make an impact for other families so they didn’t fumble through this postpartum season as brutally as I had. This template was the catalyst for a better postpartum for so many of my clients over the last several years, and I’m so excited to give you access to it for this week’s freebie!

I hope this episode will be helpful for you as you support your clients in preparing for an intentional and thriving postpartum season!

    Episode 90 - Emma's Story - C-Section and VBAC

    Episode 90 - Emma's Story - C-Section and VBAC

In the very last episode of season 3, I am chatting with one of my very special birth clients Emma,  who had two very different experiences with each of her children.

Emma shares how she felt as a Muslim woman, having an unplanned c-section with her first baby, and then how she was clear that she wanted a  natural birth next time around.

Despite being given a diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes, she strongly believes she didn't have it due to leading such a healthy lifestyle. Emma did a lot of research to fully understand GDM and was confident that the slightly high readings she got that tipped her over the threshold were more likely to be due to lack of sleep and stress.  Even so, the label stuck and it affected the way she was treated in labour.

This episode highlights some serious issues within the maternity system, and offers so much information and support for others who are pregnant and planning to give birth in a hospital setting.
