609 Practical Tips for Cash Flow Management

In this episode of the IT Business podcast, Uncle Marv discusses cash flow management with Heather Zeitzwolfe, a CPA and profit strategist. They delve into the importance of understanding the difference between profit and cash flow, emphasizing the significance of tracking business finances effectively.

Heather highlights the distinction between profit and cash flow, stressing that profit is what remains after expenses are deducted, while cash flow refers to the movement of money in and out of a business. She emphasizes the need for business owners to track their finances diligently to avoid confusion between profit and available cash.

Moreover, Heather suggests using tools like QuickBooks to visualize cash flow effectively, enabling business owners to monitor money coming in and going out. By understanding the timing of cash flows and maintaining reserves, businesses can navigate uncertainties and ensure financial stability.

Heather's approach blends her analytical skills with creativity to help clients interpret financial data and strategize for the future. Her unique focus on working with vegan clients showcases her commitment to ethical alignment in her business partnerships.

From Mexico to Main Street: How Cartels fuel America's opioid crisis

From Mexico to Main Street: How Cartels fuel America's opioid crisis

The phrase "drug cartel" often evokes images of distant violence and illicit trade, chiefly tied to Mexico. But the truth is, the influence of these formidable Mexican drug organizations reaches deep into the heartland of America in ways that might astonish you. A recent year-long operation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has unearthed stark ties between these cartels and numerous American communities.

At the helm of the Omaha Division, Special Agent in Charge Justin King has pinpointed 26 investigations over the last year that tie back to two primary drug cartels. As the investigations progress, more links are anticipated. However, with over twenty years on the front lines, King contends that neither sealing the border nor zeroing in on the cartels alone will be enough to halt America's surging opioid dilemma.

Join us in this installment of Grieving Out Loud, where we delve into the current observations of Agent King amidst America's most lethal drug crisis to date. Discover his insights on the required shifts in strategy and why America is trapped in this devastating epidemic.

Death - The Four Horsemen Book 4

Bridget, Caitlin, and Hilda wrap up their coverage of Laura Thalassa's Four Horsemen series with book 4, "Death." Since Death is just like his 3 brothers, you can easily guess how this book goes ... but that doesn't mean this episode is predictable, and there's plenty of unhinged content for your listening pleasure.

Famine - The Four Horsemen Book 3

Bridget, Caitlin, and Hilda return to their coverage of Laura Thalassa's Four Horsemen series with "Famine." While they weren't exactly thirsty (or hungry) for Famine's looks, he's snarky and arrogant enough to pique some interest. But as always, the best part of the episode are the unhinged tangents, which include ideas for a sentient object book title and random outbursts of "Genovia."

    Tijuana's toughest time

    Tijuana's toughest time

In this episode of the “Border City” podcast from our sister paper, the San Diego Union-Tribune, longtime U.S.-Mexico border reporter Sandra Dibble brings us to an awful time for Tijuana: the three-year window from 2008 to 2010. Cartels ramped up violence to horrifying levels, targeting cops and doctors. Police tried to purge traitors from their ranks — and went too far. But through it all, the spirit of Tijuana stayed alive. In the darkness, there were still sparkles of music and art and joy.

Straight A’s in College to Drug-Running for the Cartel, Addiction, Prison, and the Road to Recovery with Megan Racer

Peter “Chappy” Meyerhoff sits down with Megan Racer. As Megan tells her story, she paints a picture of a girl, barely an adult, who relied on others—particularly the men she dated—for validation and a sense of identity. She entered relationships for the type of lifestyle they could afford her, not for the love she could share with her partner.

Finally unable to keep up appearances, Megan quit her job and, with no options left, jumped on an opportunity offered by her dope dealer, which involved her driving to and from Mexico to do odd jobs for the cartel—with her two kids in the backseat on each and every single trip.

It was a short-lived gig. Megan was finally arrested at the border with 89 pounds of methamphetamine in the back of her truck, and she was separated from her children. She was able to sign a plea and took a lesser charge of distribution.

Megan spent 14 months in prison—living out those months on the same grounds she toured when she was in college—and spent the next year in a drug program, where she was completely determined to change for the better.

Today, Megan works in recovery, and she loves every second of it. Megan closes the conversation this way:

    Key Quotes:

    • My relationships were always about getting the lifestyle I want. It was never, “What kind of love can this person give me?” It was more about, “What empty feelings could I fulfill?”
    • After they interrogated me, put me back in the cell and closed the door, I never felt more free in my life. Seriously. It was done. The madness—the chaos—was done.
    • We have such an advantage. We know the depths of hell, and we know the peaks of what it could look like. There’s nothing we have not seen. There’s nothing we cannot go through. We’ve already experienced something we didn’t think we could go through and made it out as better people.
    • Can you go through the worst situation of your life and become a better person? If you can, you’ll find the most success in the world, and it might not be monetary, but it will be internal, and you will spread it to other people. I 100% believe that.

    Tijuana sí!

    Tijuana sí!

In Chapter 3 of “Border City,” a podcast from the San Diego Union Tribune and L.A. Times, Sandra Dibble continues her story about living and working as a journalist in Tijuana. It’s both sides of Tijuana that eventually make Sandra feel like she’s not just passing through anymore, but like she’s finally found her place and purpose.

From drug cartels, a kidnapping and an attempted murder of a journalist, to building real friendships, a surprise birthday party, tennis lessons, aerobics and intimate concerts in Tijuas, Sandra’s real-life experiences bring the border town’s sharp contrasts into focus — the bitter and the sweet.

    A journalist is shot

    A journalist is shot
Sandra ponders the fine line that separates danger from safety in this city of contrasts. A prominent Tijuana journalist is ambushed and a family falls victim to the Arellano cartel. But she also sees another side of the city, as her friend Angela throws her a surprise birthday party.

    Building a life

    Building a life
The kidnapping of a prominent maquiladora executive — and the threatening presence of the Arellano drug cartel — overshadow the city’s ambitious effort to boost its image. But like many Tijuana residents, Sandra feels little personal danger as she settles into her new life and explores the city.
