    Fight Dry Eyes by Blinking

    Fight Dry Eyes by Blinking

We do not usually think consciously about blinking. Blinking is automatic, right? Actually, our blink rate goes down dramatically when we use a computer! Blinking is reduced under other conditions, too. Closing the eyelids all the way down is also important. Blinking fully and frequently can both prevent and mitigate dry eye syndrome.

In this podcast, Dr. Marc Grossman discusses blinking, dry eye syndrome, and what you can do to improve your blinking.

    47. Age-Proof Your Eyes

At some point after 40, each of us will experience presbyopia, or difficulty focusing on nearby objects. We may also have trouble with night vision, suffer from dry eye, or deal with other age- and hormone-related conditions. Optometrist Dr. Surveen Singh fills us in on the latest treatments that can help with these issues, as well as the best protective measures to keep our eyes healthy well into old age. We also discuss computer use and how that’s affecting not only our eyes, but our kids', whether or not blue-light glasses actually work, which eye symptoms should be viewed as an emergency, the beauty product that may unintentionally protect our vision, and the nasty habit some of us had in the 90s that (hopefully) we’ve all broken by now. A New Way of Looking at Eye Examinations

A New Way of Looking at Eye Examinations

Having an eye exam is far more than just reading letters on an eye chart. Ask your optometrist or ophthalmologist for the specific tests and exams that Dr. Marc Grossman describes in this podcast. These exams could help head off serious eye disease in the future through early detection. High-tech tests are important.

The doctor should take your history. Also, do you use electronics excessively? How can electronics use be mitigated?

Several sensitive tests for glaucoma include tests for eye pressure and tests on the cornea. The retinal exam should go beyond a basic slit lamp exam. A digital retinal scanner and OCT are newer technologies produce very detailed images. These machines are important for detection and tracking of eye disease. Everyone over age 50 could benefit from these test as a baseline. Research shows that supplements and lifestyle changes can affect the course of eye disease.

Special tests of the front of the eye look for dry eye and tear duct problems.

Visual field testing helps detect certain eye diseases. Low-tech visual field testing might mean the patient counting fingers at the edges of their visual field. High-tech testing would require the patient to look into a machine and respond to visual cues.

Call around and ask about the new tests. They may cost more, but they are an investment in your vision health.

The Thyroid, Nutrition, and Traditional Chinese Medicine

The Thyroid, Nutrition, and Traditional Chinese Medicine

How are nutrition, eye disease, and the thyroid connected? What is Traditional Chinese Medicine's point of view on the eye? The eyes are nutrient-hungry. Yet, our nutrition is partially thwarted by toxins and refined foods. As people age, their nutrition becomes weaker. What can seniors do to improve their nutrition and absorption of nutrients?

The eyes are windows to changes elsewhere in the body. For example, high blood pressure and diabetes effect the eyes. Did you know that both the iris and the whites of the eyes can indicate problems in the body?

Traditional Chinese Medicine sees specific organs as connected to parts of the eye. For instance, the liver is connected to the cornea and the iris. Something that is happening in the eye may also be happening in the body.

The thyroid gland regulates the body's basil energy metabolism. Hypothyroidism, or a low-functioning thyroid, means the liver cannot break beta carotene down into Vitamin A. This, in turn, can cause dry eye, poor night vision, and difficult adjusting to changes in light. Which eye diseases are associated with hypothyroidism? If a person has this imbalance, what does Dr. Grossman suggest?
