Pretty sure your personality changes in another language

Pretty sure your personality changes in another language

Have you ever wondered what happens when you speak more than one language? Does your personality change? See, I've been asked this question multiple times before, and I've even wondered myself. So, I made an episode about it! I've asked a couple of my friends about it, so hear this episode for my conclusion on the topic, hint: it's not as evident. And I hope if like me, you speak more than one language, you can resonate with some of the experiences I talk about this week. Also, parenting pro tip: if you want your child to grow up multilingual, make sure they are immersed in another language as babies, they never forget it 😉

    Tomato/Tomahto and Having Babies Abroad

    Tomato/Tomahto and Having Babies Abroad

Melissa Vanzant-Birch met a handsome stranger in a Boston Starbucks when she was a law student; just as if Hollywood screenwriters had scripted it, that chance meeting changed everything.

Today Melissa is a mom of two little Brits with a thriving London legal career far different from the one she imagined as an undergrad in Chapel Hill.

We discuss the indignity of our children correcting our pronunciation of words like zebra and tomato (or anything, quite frankly), the differences between American and British maternity experiences, her children's special requests of family members back home (spoiler alert: it's Cheez-Its and goldfish), our mutual desperation for the next generation to enjoy mashed potatoes as much as we do, and whether or not her legal career requires her to wear a powdered wig.

You can find Melissa on Instagram at @MVBinEngland.

Thanks for being here, y'all! I'd love your thoughts, questions, ideas, and everything in between. You can find me at @ButNotAllAtOnce on social media or ButNotAllAtOnce.com.

Stephen Maser and the current state of Canadian economics and politics

Stephen Maser and the current state of Canadian economics and politics

This is a really interesting discussion with Stephen Maser from Raymond James! We discuss the current state of the Canadian economy and ongoing NAFTA negotiations with the United States and Mexico. You can hear Episode 15 of the I Love Kelowna Podcast right here. (LINK) If you enjoyed this episode, an iTunes review would be SO appreciated! https://tinyurl.com/y8jax3xb SHOW NOTES Stephen was born and raised in Medicine Hat, AB. He and his wife Laura moved to Kelowna in 2011. Buying a house sight unseen requires a lot of trust… And he was not disappointed! Stephen grew up on a cattle ranch that has been in the family for many generations, and in university he majored in agricultural production. Learning the science and working his way up the ranks in Canada’s oil and gas industry. Edward Jones agreed to take him on and pay for his training, which was like financial bootcamp. In the world of financial planning and advising, personality and one’s fit with the dominant corporate culture are crucial, so he decided to switch to Raymond James in 2008 and he’s never looked back. Why the skill of empathy is crucial in any type of advice business. Getting a US securities license and advising for American, Canadian and dual citizen clients. Key differences between the two countries, in particular tax law. A deep dive into conducting business in the United States and cross-border. The relative strengths of the US and Canadian economies. Contentious NAFTA negotiations between the Trudeau and Trump administrations. A prediction about the current, proposed #SpeculationTax : whether we think it will actually pass, and the effect it is already having on our local Kelowna economy. Uncertainty is maybe even worse than having mediocre fundamentals, when it comes to financial markets, including real estate. Some great tactics and techniques for getting comfortable with a brand new city. A big shoutout to Cheryl Gillespie of Rock House Style and Camille Saltman from …

    The Real You II (#WokeUpLikeThis)

    The Real You II (#WokeUpLikeThis)
#WokeUpLikeThis is a popular hashtag today for people taking selfies who looks so beautiful and blooming when they woke up, when in fact, it's the opposite of how they really look without a camera. The speaker of this message connected this popular hashtag #wokeuplikethis to our real identity in Christ. When we were made alive, risen in a new life with Christ, we suddenly woke up with a package of good things in store for us to CHOOSE to do (Ephesians 2:10). Even if we are on still on earth, in Christ, we woke up to a new citizenship--a citizen of heaven--we woke up to a new mission in life, we woke up a new Spirit. And that is why we can choose to do good things, purposeful things, because we woke up like this...like Jesus.
