John also discusses how misperception leads to attachment and aversion which turns the wheel of suffering. This episode was recorded on October 11th, 2023.

Taṇhā - The Cause Of Suffering (plus guided compassion meditation)

Taṇhā - The Cause Of Suffering (plus guided compassion meditation)

In this episode, Rev. Mikey Noechel offers a talk on tanha which is the cause of suffering. Tanha is often translated to mean craving, thirst or addiction and is the second of the Four Noble Truths. The Four Noble Truths are:

1st Noble Truth (dukkha): There is pain, loss, sickness, and death in life.

2nd Noble Truth (taṇhā): The cause of suffering is reactive, repetitive craving.

3rd Noble Truth (nirodha): There is an end to suffering.

4th Noble Truth (magga): There is a path leading to the end of suffering which is the Eightfold Path.

This talks closes with a guided compassion meditation which begins at 32 minutes. The phrases used during the meditation are: "I feel you. I care about you. I am here for you."

Episode 12: My takeaways from the novel "The Winding Way Home" by Wesley J. Wildman

Episode 12: My takeaways from the novel "The Winding Way Home" by Wesley J. Wildman

In this episode, I discuss my takeaways from the novel by Wesley J. Wildman titled The Winding Way Home. This work of fiction explores the life of Jesse as he navigates his way through the latter half of his life. Along the way, Jesse experiences much joy and much agony, nurturing a journey towards spiritual fulfillment along the way.

In my discussion, I relate the Buddhist teachings of dukkha dukkha, viparinama dukkha, and sankhara dukkha to the characters in the novel and to my own life.

I found these references to be helpful to my understanding of the dukkhas:

The book is an advanced review copy that I received from the publisher, Wildhouse Fiction. No compensation was received for this review.

The background music is "Thin Places" by Jesse Gallagher.

Creating A Beautiful Environment Within (plus R.A.I.N. meditation)

Creating A Beautiful Environment Within (plus R.A.I.N. meditation)

In this episode Rev. Mikey Noechel offers a talk on the 1st Noble Truth, the truth of dukkha. Dukkha is often translated as pain, suffering, or stress. This is what the Buddha described dukkha as in the Turning the Wheel of Dhamma Sutta:

"This is dukkha: birth is dukkha, aging is dukkha, sickness is dukkha, death is dukkha, encountering what is not dear is dukkha, separation from what is dear is dukkha, not getting what one wants is dukkha."

Mikey offers compassion, a loving relationship with pain, as a method to developing a beautiful relationship with dukkha. Mikey guides a R.A.I.N. meditation to develop compassion towards painful experiences.

    R.A.I.N. stands for:

    R- Recognize

    A- Allow

    I- Investigate

    N- Nurture

The R.A.I.N. meditation begins 31 minutes into the podcast. Peace & Love. Enjoy!

In this episode Rev. Mikey Noechel offers a talk and meditation on the 3rd foundation of mindfulness: mindfulness of the mind. This talk is a part of a series on the Satipatthana Sutta which is the discourse of the four foundations of mindfulness. The four foundations are:

    1st Foundation: Mindfulness of Body

    2nd Foundation: Mindfulness of Feelings

3rd Foundation: Mindfulness of the Mind

4th Foundation: Mindfulness of the Dharma

The 3 Marks - Dukkha & The Wisdom of Dissatisfaction

The 3 Marks - Dukkha & The Wisdom of Dissatisfaction

Andrew continues a series of talks on "The 3 Marks of Existence" speaking on the topic of Dukkha. Perhaps the first teaching that the Buddha offered was on the nature of our unhappiness and dissatisfaction in life, and his radical and somewhat paradoxical teaching of how embracing this aspect of our lives is actually a way to find deeper freedom and peace.

The Four Noble Truths and RAIN Meditation

The Four Noble Truths and RAIN Meditation

In this episode Mikey Noechel and Andrew Chapman team up to offer a talk on the 4 Noble Truths and a guided meditation on R.A.I.N.

    The Four Noble Truths are:

    1. There is pain and difficulty in life. Embrace this truth.

    2. Reactive and repetitive craving is the cause of suffering. Let go of reactivity.

    3. There is an end to suffering. See the freedom.

    4. The eightfold path is the path away from suffering. Act in accordance to the eightfold path.

R.A.I.N. stands for Recognize, Allow, Investigate, Nurture. Peace & Love. Enjoy!

Approaching the Buddhist Path 10 - The Possibility of Freedom

John Bruna, the spiritual director of the Way of Compassion Foundation, continues the discussion of the path to awakening as presented in the book "Approaching Buddhism" by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Venerable Thubten Chödron. John discusses how the Buddhist path offers the potential for completely removing suffering from one's experience. He speaks about the different levels of mind and how removing the adventitious mental afflictions leads to complete freedom. This episode was recorded on September 28th, 2022.

The First Noble Truth - Dukkha!

The First Noble Truth - Dukkha!

Andrew kicks off a series of talks on the 4 noble truths and the eightfold path, speaking on the first noble truth: dukkha!

The first truth has often been misinterpreted as the Buddha making a claim that "life is suffering", but rather than a claim to be believed, the Buddha is offering a task to be put into practice centered around embracing the difficulty and vulnerability of our lives rather than running from it. His teaching captures the essence of the reality that when we resist pain, we suffer further, when we embrace pain, we experience freedom from the unnecessary layer of suffering that comes from reactivity and avoidance.
